Great Potential For Next Season by Eddie Bingham

After regularly hunting down various articles concerning Arsenal transfer updates and rumors, I have been made ever more hopeful at the prospect of finally filling that dusty trophy cabinet at the Emirates. And while my ideas for next season’s starting XI go slightly against the typical Wenger way of operating, I think it is perfectly reasonable and is based upon who I have heard Arsene is interested in and what we already have.

At the moment, there is a 4-5-1 formation being used, very much centered around Fabregas in midfield and of course a lone Van Persie up front. One of my main concerns with this formation is that when Van Persie is injured, there is a dependence on goals from midfield as the usual alternatives in Bendtner and Chamakh are relatively ineffective with the Arsenal attacking method; a head on attack with a heavy reliance on Fabregas creating chances from the center, both Chamakh and Bendtner however are both tall players and are far more suited to chances coming in from out wide (something that Denilson’s sensational sideways passes to the wings could have aided prior to the huge influx of bids that dragged him away).

What i propose is the use of a 4-1-3-2 formation with the possibility of Van Persie and Gervinho upfront together (I did have Bendtner in mind but unfortunately the worlds greatest player looks set for a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona for around £45 million). I see Gervinho operating as a second striker. This would allow Van Persie to remain as our key goal scorer but would release some of the pressure on him to collect the ball upfront and allow him to make more attacking runs with Gervinho doing the collecting and feeding him through at goal. I still do feel that Arsenal need a fox in the box willing to pick up the scraps after seeing many uncollected near post chances last season and also a possible alternative for an injured Van Persie. I see someone like Klose coming in here as he has great experience, can finish chances well but also is getting older and will not be as ambitious as a younger striker coming in so can act as a super sub/replacement when necessary.

One of the key attacking issues at present is the lack of confidence from the midfield when it comes to having a stab at goal. There have been countless times where I have shouted “SHOOT” when Fabregas has been at the edge of the box but only to witness another attempt at creating the perfect goal. It has seemed ever more likely that he will leave for Catalonia and to be honest, I hope so. I see Nasri playing CM and illustrating the attacks. As we all saw at the first half of the season, this is a man more than capable of picking up a goal or two from midfield but can create chances effectively and that is exactly what we need. There is also healthy competition from Wilshere and Ramsey which can lead to a rotational system, possibly with Nasri switching left for some games.

Defensively, the release of dead weight Squillaci seems imminent and Arsene has recognised the need for some more dominant centre backs to aid our main defensive weakness, set pieces. Cahill and Samba have been the favorites to wear the red and white (or if you prefer, dark and light blue) next season and both are big, strong characters with premier league experience and a more matured defensive mindset than what Koscielny and Djourou offer. I’m glad to see Arsene looking to invest in bigger players, especially when considering our feeble approach to teams such as Stoke and i believe that this pairing fit the bill.

While many still have faith in the ability in Song in centre defensive midfield, I believe that he is too weak against bigger teams and I can see Vermaelen replacing him there during some games and adding solidity during set pieces whilst also giving us the benefit of having a defensively minded player in midfield that is willing to sit just in front of the back line; there is no doubt that he has the technical ability to play there. I also see Koscielny rotating into the defensive line frequently as he also possesses great technical ability and still has great potential (Djourou however may have to pray for some imported German cucumbers to be fed to the rest of the back line before he gets his first team place).

I have heard that a move to Man City for Clichy is on its way and all I can say really is good luck with your future endeavors, you served us well. Unfortunately that does leave a gap in the left back position that Gibbs is unlikely to fill just yet. Jose Enrique seems to be a solid replacement and of course has Premier League experience so for me, he is a viable replacement.

Throw in the possible entry of Japanese sensation Ryo Miyaichi into the mix and I feel that things are looking pretty good for next season. I am not going to get ahead of myself just yet but Arsene’s newly found eagerness in the transfer market combined with a willingness to release some of his worse players (finally) is definitely a step in the right direction. And while some may argue that this has taken far too long, I believe that Arsene has done sensationally well on a shoe-string budget over the years and with a little financial backing, we can start to challenge for trophies for longer than half a season.

Since we have been dubed ‘softie’ my formation would be defensive-minded. 4-2-3-1

    Sezny
    Sagna ——–Cahil ———–Samba ——–Gibbs/Eboue

    Song ————TV5

    Walcot —————-Wilshere———- Gervinho

    RVP

This is without FAB & NASRI.

Rgular Subs: Frimpong for Song/TV5; Ramsey for Wilshere; Arshavin for Gervinho and Chamack for RVP. I’m not thinking of Bendtner at all, he should go.

Plus ..what we need is one very creative player who can provide precision passes. I think we can get Keita of Barcelona in part exchange for FAB or Barton (once he finishes his therapeutic course)

Your congratulating Wenger on his “newly found eagerness in the transfer market” yet he has not signed anyone as of yet apart from the immenent arrival of Gervinho. Furthermore he has already detracted the likes of Cahil and Samba among others with his cheap, bargaining, still has not extended Nasri’s contract and looks set to release Fabregas for almost £20 million less than he is actually worth!

Quite a nice team from looking at your formation you suggested, definitely brings some solidity and i believe the players i put in, are quite.. Realistic buys. As De-rossi has fell out with Roma, Douglas costas on arsenal radars, aswell as enrique and cahill. With Gervinho a cert too be announced the next few days.

We need to keep nasri and replase clichy and fabregas! I’d also give Walcott a go through the middle and play like Hernadez does for United! Use gervinho as a bit pack player as he will need broke into the league! Replace clichy with someone like baines! Or that fellow Cissoko from lyon but that would cost us! Replace Fabregas with a box to box midfielder! We need a Vieira/Keane figure! A leader! I’d De Rossi!! We need an out n out winger like mata!!

I quite like your 4-1-3-2 idea, though I think it can be switched to a 4-1-3-1-1 or a 4-2-3-1 depending on personnel. In the mould of your formation, I would like to see the following:
    SZCZESNY
    SAGNA – RCB – LCB – TV5
    SONG
    WALCOTT/WITSEL – NASRI – ARSHAVIN/MIYAICHI
    GERVINHO – RVP

RCB & LCB I think need to have Djourou and Koscielny as backups, the prime candidates I would like to see as starters are Vertonghen (can also cover Song in case of injury), Sakho or Hangeland – then if you have to, find one out of Samba/Cahill/Dann for the other position.
For the above formation, Nasri can be replaced by Ramsey or Wilshere, or Wilshere can be pushed out wide/moved depending on personnel. I think you would use Chamakh as a key sub to come on and move to a 4-1-3-1-1 and have him knock the ball down for players like RVP & Gervinho, as well as to score headers.

Rate this comment: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  22. Dan says:

The above formation I suggested is not only workable, but also affordable for Arsenal:
    Players out:
    Fabregas – 35m (ish)
    Clichy – 8m
    Bendtner + Denilson = 10-12m

    Players in:
    Gervinho – 10m
    Witsel – 10m
Then buy 2 centre backs for the equivalent of whatever Fab sells for – for 35m you could easily buy Sakho AND Vertonghen!!!!!!
Then you use the money we had in the kitty anyway to buy Oxlade-Chamberlain for the future/as a backup, and we still have money left over for Wenger to sign a few kids.

    Sagna Cahill Vermaelen J.Enrique
    ——Mata – Wilshere
    Alvarez ——-Gervinho
    ——–Walcott
    ——-Van Persie

Walcott is the second striker with a free role to run into attack situations. Alvarez and Gervinho can interchange, cut in and interchange with Walcott. Mata and Wilshere share the DM with Wilshere advancing and Mata protecting the back four. If Nasri stays i slot him in the center between Alvarez and Gervinho and play either Wilshere or Mata depending on opposition.

A side without Nasri (Fabregas will leave) who is the motor of the French National squad (the number 10) is suicide… Total suicide…!!!

We have no creative midfielder… Wilshere is more of a supporting one and would learn from someone with experience…

Wenger is sleep walking into the abyss and he is taking every Arsenal fans with him…

I saw the different line ups and those sides would get us just out of the top four, if we are lucky… And forget about the CL or even winning any cups…

we dont need replacements, we need improvements. regardless of who leaves, we need to replace clichy, 2 goals, 10 assists in his WHOLE arsenal career is terrible for an attacking left back. we need to strengthen at the back. cahill/samba are not good enough. pay 20mil for a world class defender and he will pay for himself by january!.
we need an out n out striker to partner van persie and we need an experienced keeper who will shout at the back four so they keep their concentration for longer than 2 minutes at a ttime. i love arsenal but am becoming worried that were getting left behind.

We are going backwards fast in the transfer window. NO CB! NO GK! and they are a must if we are to improve………….we brought in Gervinho but now need to replace Clichy! Enrique is not a done deal!
So that leaves us like this. If we lose Fab …we must replace him how we do that I do not know. Jack Wilshere is not Fabregas (yet). If we lose Nasri…same deal!

    @ Eddie

WHAT A LOAD OF COW DUNK TO SAY SONG IS A WEAK DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER. Wilshere got all the credit and hype due to his age and playing for England. No one ever gives Song the credit that he deserves. He’s been there clearing the potential through balls, tackling hard, keeping possession, very poised in control and passing. Why do you think Wenger quoted, ” Song is an important part of the team and losing him has hurt us”. This was his injury that he picked up earlier this year. We struggled defensively because Song’s relentlessness was missing and there wasn’t enough cover.

So wake up you numbskull! You mentioned Vermaelen in Song’s role, what a bloody joke. Why don’t you just make Vermaelen Striker? Song is regarded by Wenger as a box to box player and thats why he can move forward to score crucial goals too.

Song to me was one of our best and most consistent performers last year.

    What do others think?

Nice lineup, very similar to the one I envision and very realistic.

I hope we get Enrique. His ability to cross and hit long balls wilth prcesion adds a new dimension to the team. I know Wenger’s style is a short passing game but sometimes we need to simply whip it into the box and with taller and stronger players, we’ll be more threatening. Sometimes nicking a goal like that can win us games or give the team more confidence to push forward even more. I noticed we weren’t comfortable last year with a one goal lead.

Season 11/12 if Arsene willing to consider/ buy…

    GK (3)
    Szcenzny, Viviano, Fabianski
    DEF (2RB, 4CB, 2LB)
Sagna, Eboue, Vermaleen, Samba, Cahill, Koscielny, Gibbs, Enrique
    MID (3CDM, 4CAM, 3W)
Parker, Song, Vidal, Alvarez, Wilshere, Ramsey, Barton, Rosicky, Walcott, Mata
    FW (2LF, 1CF, 2RF)
Robin Van Persie, Arshavin, Chamakh, Gervinho, Ryo

Steel and BPL experience added in Samba, Cahill, Parker, Barton, Enrique

Creativity Replacement for Fab and Nasri in Alvarez, Vidal, Mata

    My squad is without
Fabregas, Nasri, Clichy, Bendtner, Denilson, Squillaci, Almunia…
    Their sales should generate about >80m Euros (Fab-35m, Nasri-25m, Clichy-8m, Rest>12m)

    We have (40m + 80m = 120m) transfer funds to spend!!!
    How we can spend 120m…
    35m-Samba+Cahill+Enrique
    73m-Alvarez+Vidal+Mata+Parker+Barton
    12m-Gervinho

    DONE!!!!!!

Arsene and Board…. For your consideration….

I can’t see a clear direction for this club and haven’t for a while I have become increasingly worried about the likes of fabregas going swell as nasri and clichy and keep hearing about van persie going to hand a transfer request in so I think let wenger try and sort this out and I think he should be left to it but get a new board and get rid of IVAN GAZIDIS he is an idiot.

  58. Elie says:

i love to see Given in Arsenal for 1 or 2 years until Schezny get more experience, because it’ll be difficult if we dont buy am experiences GK (with respect for the great Shezny).
i would love to see this formation:

    ………………..Given…………………….
    Sagna……Samba…..Vermaleen……Enrique/Baines/Coentrao
    …………….Song…..Wilshere…………………
    Walcott……………..Nasri/Fabregas………Gervinho
    ………………………VP………………………

remember, we were very good last season, but we lost everything with small errors from our CB, LB and GK.
now i can see another LW or SS that Wenger will buy, but we dont know whom will be!!!!

wenger is a very good coach but he needs to add some seriousness to his tactical abilities he needs to keep our current team intact and sign back up players or possible replacement

  60. ND says:

This is a senseless piece. we gunners shuld stop kiddin ourselves. what we need nw are for the uncommitted players to get out( nasri, fabregas and clichy) and get in strong players like samba, cahill, gervinho, mata e.t.c.and maybe we’ll actually win a silverware nxt season. but it’s unfortunate our manager’s not interested in trophies at the moment.

  61. Goffy says:

    Super Scz
    Sagna, Samba, TV5, Enrique
    Song, Wilshere
    Gerviniho, Van Persie, Mata
    Walcott

The movement and interchangeability that front 4 would offer is out of this world.
It may not be as strong as our team last year but I feel this team would suprise many.
If Walcott isn’t cutting it as a striker then we can stick RVP up top and Ramsey or Arshavin in the hole, as that is Arshavin’s best position.

  62. Reuben Da Gooner says:

szchezny / GIVEN(i would say on his day one of the best)
    Sagna. TV5. Samba. Gibbs.
Walcott. Wilshire. Ramsey. Song. Arshavin(HAD BAD SEASON BT STILL DECENT ALL PLAYERS HAV BAD SPELLS)
    RVP

And with a couple of others cahill.. Sakho.. Parker… I think we need better than the strikers bein talked about proven in england not france and not defoe or doyle…. And i think barton would add fight to our team wot we missed last seasin…..

  63. Joe says:

everyone agree that gelvinho will join arsenal? i think he’s good attacker. BUT unfortunately, its really good for arsenal if arsene wenger can catch samuel eto’o. he’s just not experienced player(once he play at real madrid and barcelona) but he’s also very good mentor (maybe good for youngster). he also can play second striker and flanks.

2nd best of signing is to bring the great GK and mentor for youngster. so i will choose button(even he has a contract). but i willing skelenburg is likely want help arsenal. so arsene help him right?

3rd best signing is to bring parker (as fabregas’s replacement) to partners with wilshere.

4th best signing is at back. as we look eboue is some treat problem (always do mistake). mmmpphh… cahill? maybe.. but we need good full back. as we seen arsenal had a great fullback like winterburn and dixon even ashley cole.

so conclusion is eto’o, skelenburg, parkers is best signing. cahill just so..so.. but i glad if he joins..

so probably 4-1-3-2 is best line up as it can turn into 4-3-3 and 4-2-4..

    regards,
    Joe

    reply from Reuben Da Gooner:

Shay Given? yeah good GK, some mistake arsene allow clichy go alone and not do a exchange transfer. if clichy exchange to shay given is some good for us but its too late.

RUMOURS: 11 arsenal player on way out:

almunia and fabregas – back to spain
eboue – interest to turkish club.
    rosicky – back to dortmund
    arshavin heading to juventus
v.persie wanted by real madrid (but i think not bcoz he just need 5goal to reach 100. so maybe some confident level will come)
clichy – on he way to city
nasri – want better contract and trophy BUT why man.city? man.city cant give u trophy. :D
bendtner – way out to koberhavn (his homegrown)
vela – unsettled as first team level.
denilson – not interesting to play anymore (i dont care if he leaving)
