FA Chief slams Arsenal fans for "vile" Adebayor chant
Arsenal fans to blame?
The ex-Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor was let off with a fine for his over-zealous celebration after scoring for his new club, Man City, in front of the Arsenal fans.
The FA explained that the reason he was given a suspended ban was because they took into consideration the “extremely provocative nature of the abuse he received”, and the FA Chief Executive Ian Watmore went further and declared that the chants were “hostile and abusive” and should be stamped out.
“There are areas of chanting that go beyond what’s technically illegal, like racist or homophobic chanting, into what I think of as vile chanting.
“We in football should think about ways in which we can exorcise that from the game, but without glorifying it, because it puts the average person off.” he said.
“They don’t like it when it’s their own crowd doing it and, to the players, it can be declared as a hostile and abusive act as much as being racist or homophobic.”
Chanting at football matches has been in the news a lot lately, after the furore caused by the “paedophile” references to Arsene Wenger by Man Utd fans, but the FA obviously think that the Adebayor chant is even worse than that.
The chant (which is based on the easy rhyme made by “Adebayor” and “whore”) is actually a very old one, and the Arsenal fans probably learnt it from listening to their opponents (like Tottenham) singing it at the Emirates when Adebayor was an Arsenal player.
I don’t remember anyone calling for it to be banned back then. And even more pertinent, i don’t remember Adebayor taking offence and taunting the Spurs fans either!

Congratulations England for having the most stupid FA in the world. Surprising if you think of England’s claim as the ‘mother’ of football.
