Fabianski – What next for the problematic Pole?

Posted on October 26, 2011 by admin

Despite arguing that Szczęsny is “lucky” to be Arsenal’s Number One instead of him, Lukasz Fabianski has again had to settle for a Carling Cup appearance. His game last night against Bolton was only his second this season and it looks unlikely that his tally will exceed much more than the lower double figures.

The Gunners ‘keeper has himself confessed – to the Sun –  that he worries about the prospect of not playing at the European Championships in 2012: “…It is only when you are playing regularly that your confidence and feeling for the game gets better… Wojciech is playing well and the fact we have the Euros coming up in Poland makes things difficult”.

The Polish international – also competing with Szczęsny for his country’s spot between the sticks – experienced something of an erratic ninety minutes, in which he made numerous strong saves.

Unfortunately, though, he spoiled what could have been a notable display with a couple of infamous Fabianski wobbles, such as his shaky save from a long-range Chris Eagles effort that could have quite easily found its way through the keeper’s grasp.

Still, the lack of attention drawn to this potential ‘howler’ is refreshing, and instead points to some degree of progression for the 26 year-old. His age does indeed suggest that his chances at Arsenal have come and gone, but with Almunia looking set to fulfil his dreams of a move away from the Emirates, it is debateable whether Fabianski should be kept just for the lesser competitions or not.

Wojciech Szczęsny’s loan spells, beyond any doubt, made him into the player that he is today. Similarly, Vito Mannone’s time at Hull and Barnsley has led to huge improvements in his ability as well.

“There is still time until the transfer window opens in January, so we will see what happens”, Fabianski told the Sun. Indeed, it seems that even he has realised that his time at Arsenal may have reached a pivotal point.

Is it too late for Fabianski to be sent out on loan or should we just be content with an adequate-enough replacement for Szczęsny on the bench?

fabianski shows real glimpses of class at times, but that is usually followed by an inexperienced mistake. He should be given the chance to learn and grow to his full potential. he can’t just go out to any club, and he won’t. unless the right offer comes in for him I feel he might just rot away like other fringe players.

i’d keep fabianski, his actually pretty good but szczensy is 1 of the best in the world. she should sell if we get a good offer but otherwise loan him/keep him

on a more important issue we have a real problem in the depth of our fullbacks, their is NO adequate cover 4 bacs sagna & gibbs isn’t fit 4 more than 50% a season n always out of position, while santos plays like a LW rather than a LB, we at least need a quality LB in january, plus verthongen n 1 MARQUEE signing 4 the attack

but regardless our boys should be commended, they have ate the media pressure 4 breakfast & have been in incredible form for a while & i think we have a real shot at beating chelsea with the players they have out cause of suspension & injury but even if they do lose, we won’t have another derby/hard match 4 a while besides against city & no one has a chance against them:( but anyway if we show consistency then i’m sure arsenal can finish 3rd minnimum

Fab had his chances last seasons and blew it. honestly i think Mannone is better than him. Even Almunia after a loan season at westham might be better option (not sure though). Fab is a good shot stopper but both him and Almunia were awful at set pieces and high bolls
Lets hope Szczny is injury free and stays as keeper for many years to come

fabianski didnt mess up last season, he was quite impressive infact.
and he’s right when he states that he still might be our number 1 if he didn’t get injured.

but as things stand now, szcesser is our number 1 and hopefully for the next decade or so (but he has to stop his silly runs out of goal!!!)

if fab leaves, so be it. time for mannone to shine.

    @ Max

Was going to say the same thing. He starts to shine after a run of consecutive games and he was good for us last season when that happened (I remember how pumped he was when he saved that pen. away at Partizan Belgrade when everyone was calling for his head, he has character). I’d put him out on loan, if he wants to of course, because he should be playing regularly. Vito had a loan spell last year so maybe he could back up for a bit.

What I like most about Fabianski, although watching last night you wouldn’t know – put it down to rustiness – is his distribution skills. Has a great throw and is so quick to get the ball out and get the team rolling, has a better kick than Szcz. as well. But we all love Szczesny, he’s great, even if he looked a twat celebrating after the winner against Barca last year. haha
