Fabregas – It means nothing if we don’t qualify

Posted on February 17, 2011 by admin

The Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas was of course happy that the Gunners beat his old club Barcelona at the Emirates last night, but he is adamant that it means nothing in the great scheme of things unless Arsenal put in another brilliant performance in the second leg to knock Barcelona out of the competition.

Arsenal came back in ast years QuarterFinal to force a draw against Barcelona, but were destroyed by Lionel Messi in the second leg at the Nou Camp. Fabregas believes that there are many reasons why the Gunners are a much better side this time around.

“First of all this time we don’t have five or six injured players,” Fabregas said. “Second, we are all one year older, we have closed the gap on them. We are 23, 24, 25, 26 years old – mature enough to play big games. We showed it here but if we don’t show it in the Camp Nou it’s nothing to us. It’s just one game – it’s a nice compliment to us, that’s all.

“They are the best side in football’s history, in my opinion, but the tie is 90 minutes and we’ve only played 45. It gives confidence to the team.”

With another performance like that, plus the increased confidence gained from the knowledge that Barcelona are beatable, could see Arsenal cause the shock of the season….

Ummmm there are 180 mins (including injury time) in two legs of football Cesc…not 90 PFFFT amateurs :P i kid, i kid. Let’s hope El Capitano and the rest of the Gunners lead us to GLORY at Camp POO!

Reality guys, we were totally bossed for long periods. We showed too much respect. The job is only half done and we have an away game to play. We only had 40% posession, imagine what it will be like at Camp Nou? We have already conceded a goal so we need a brace to put the pressure on.
We might only have the ball for 15 mins in Barcelona. Its absolutely on a knife edge.

  6. Arsenal Diehard says:

The goal that we concede is avoidable if the defense are in line.
Clichy is off line a little bit that cause Villa to be onside.
Mr Wenger will point out this. I’m sure.
Three week is a long way to go, anything can happen.
But I’m confidence that we’ll go through if no injuries to our players.

Would like to say a massive congrats to the arsenal we were never going to boss the game but we did what was needed a big result and confidence boost. As we all know you don’t have to have all the possession to win the game, I hope the boys ain’t too worn out from this and we continue to challenge on all fronts!!!! Up the arsenal

Cesc is as wrong about the significance of last night as he was in his mathematics.

Yes, we want to win the competition, but beating “the best side in football’s history” is a stand-alone achievement that none of us is likely to forget.

Sure, we’re not going to rush out and buy the mugs or the DVDs just yet, we have to follow this up. But we’re still in four competitions and although the tide changed a while ago, perception of that change hadn’t yet caught up with reality.

It has now. And for all the world to see.

i dont mean to change the mood about cesc. but if he honestly feels that barca are ‘the best team in footballing history’ and he wants to be a part of that i respect it. I know he will give us his all while he is an arsenal player, but we cant hold on to him if he wants to go.. Jack wilshere proved last night he is a worthy replacement.. and ramsey will soon be back.. and weve all forgotten how good he was. respect cesc, if he wants to go let him.. we will just have to prove it was the wrong decision.
