FIFA may ban Henry – but no chance of replay
The furore over Arsenal-legend Thierry Henry’s deliberate handball against Ireland will not be going away any time soon, but FIFA have ruled out any possibility of a replay, despite everyone asking them to bend the rules, including Henry.
The Republic manager Giovanni Trapattoni has derided FIFA for ignoring the calls for “fair play”.
“I would like to know what I have done to Blatter. If he explains it then at least I would be calm. I go to schools and speak of fair play, but perhaps I am a dreamer,” he said.
Meanwhile a FIFA spokesman says there is still the possibility that Henry could miss the World Cup, but only if the independent disciplinary board decide that he deliberately cheated.
There can be little doubt about it as he has confessed to all and sundry so i don’t see why they should dither about charging him.
“The disciplinary commission is an independent organ,” a Fifa spokesman said yesterday.
“It will decide if the case is of interest. The possibility exists of sanctioning a player for unsporting behaviour on the basis of video evidence.”
The Man Utd defender Patrice Evra gave a different slant on the subject, when he said that Henry should be given a statue in honour of sending France through to the World Cup Finals!
Evra said: “We should raise him in a statue. I have no problem with the foreign press destroying Henry but doing it in France – that is impossible.”
If they gave Henry a three game ban, which they did originally in the case of Eduardo, at least Henry would be guaranteed to miss out on the Group matches.
Do you think he deserves a ban? Or a statue?

Henry didn’t invent cheating in football! Cheating happens in everygame all the time – the shirt pulling, the diving, the extra yard on a throw in/freekicks.
I do not condone what Henry did. A man of his reputation should’ve done better. However, this whole ruckus built up by overblown articles in the media is due to the fact that Irish want to find a scapegoat for their own shortcomings.
The Scottish also did something similar in the Eduardo incident. They were clearly outplayed in both the legs and never looked close to salvage even a point from the game – however, the way they behaved it seemed like Eduardo had robbed them of a confirmed champions league place!
Yes Henry and Eduardo cheated – like many other footballers do in hundreds of games every week. So treat it as it is. Please do not vilify them as if they are the inventors of cheating just because the Irish or the Scottish or the English were at the receiving end.
Britain is fast becoming an abode for mediocrity because of this habit of blaming everything on foreigners and not taking any responsibility for their own shortcomings!
I think Henry’s handball was not deliberate. Watch the video again: it was an instinctive reaction to avoid touching the ball. His hand moved twice in quick succession. It happens all the time to all of us. I guess a forensic study of the video will confirm this.
Nobody banned Maradona for his Hand of the Devil.Henry’s handball was not necessary intentional and has yet to be proven so. We had to swallow it,move on,Trappatoni and start preparations for thr Euros, your next failure!!
I know …. we’ll punish players from now on whenever a ref makes a wrong decision.
FIFA logic = ?
Please the ref didnt see anything so why should he be punish.
