Football’s moved on, but Wenger hasn’t (Can anyone save Arsenal now?)

Posted on January 24, 2012 by admin

Who Could Follow Le Prof? – by Lorenzo Sallows

I hate to seem presumptuous but the question raised is a valid one. After the worst season in many years, questions are being asked and Arsene is not the man to answer them. Do NOT think for one minute I am jumping on the back of the current Hate Wenger campaign because I refuse to dismiss his achievements in the past. He is not a poor manager just, in this current climate not the best manager suited to Arsenal.

Since Wenger began his career at Arsenal, a lot in the footballing world has changed. Money now dominates the game, as opposed to youth and hard scouting and I feel that Wenger is stuck firmly in the past. His stubbornness is a quality always apparent and sometimes endearing, but increasingly over the last few years it has proved to be his Achilles heel. He abundant faith is never repaid by players, such as Fabregas and Na$ri who value money and success over loyalty. Age is not on Arsene side and with every season that passes, more and more speculation regarding his future arise.

Bringing Henry back to Arsenal, shows the world that Wenger hasn’t moved on from the “invincibles” era, as he has failed to buy a World Class striker since. Wenger put all of his attention and energy into blooding players like Fabregas and Eduardo but they all moved out, slowely but surely, leaving Le Prof with nothing. The current squad is a mess if truth be told. A collection of the worlds finest “deadwood” blended with lazy, uninterested players. Theo Walcott’s footballing skills demonstrate he is already dreaming about being a Juventus player and I hate to say it but Sunday may have been the final straw for Van Persie.

With regards to choosing a manager to succeed Wenger, I have no qualification to recommend anyone other than the usual fantasy wish-list. Whomever they may be they have a HUGE task ahead of them. Bigger even than the Chelsea conundrum. It will take time as well, there is no quick fix to our solutions and this is the fans “beef.” Why has Wenger allowed Arsenal to fall into such disrepute with no conceivable Plan B ? Once we were all proud to be Arsenal supporters but over the past few years, we have been given less and less to cheer. In retrospect, the Carling Cup defeat to Birmingham put the final nails in Wenger’s coffin. Last season imploded because of that loss and ever since we have slid into obscurity. As respect to Arsene, he should be placed in a senior scouting chief role, where his talent may still have a positive impact on our club but as of now we look to the heavens for a God given gift to save our club.

Arsenal would look awfully different without Wenger. It’ll feel like a different club. I really wish he’s able to turn things round and give the fans something to cheer. But if he continues making strange decisions, failing to spend (I still can’t believe he didn’t even make an attempt to sign Suarez or Falcao), and having blind faith in the likes of Diaby and Rosicky, then maybe he should leave

Wenger has really lost it..How can players like Theo and Ramsey improve when they know that they can start the next game even after an awful game??Djourou is even afraid to the ball..

    Out-
    Djourou-Like he’s 17 year
    Diaby-1 good game+3 bad game
    Rosicky-Can’t do nothing…
    Metesacker-Why not Samba?
    Benayoun-Why is he wit us?
    Almunia-Still there?
    Chamakh-Lack concentration and confidence

    @ twig

Yes the club would look very different and that is what is needed now. The stubborn 4-3-3 doesn’t work, he does not have the supreme talents of Fabregas to make it +/- work, he got the wrong defender in Mert, who is too slow for such a high up way of defending. His lack of speed on Sunday was heart stopping. AW wants to play in a certain way but does not buy the players that can do it for him, baffling really. He will give much more stability to the team if he plays the players he has in their natural position, Walcott on the flanks doesn’t work, same with AA. He has to replace with real quality those that don’t perform on the level that is required (and never will) like Djourou, Ramsey, Mertesacker and make those his subs. he needs to cut the dead wood; Denilson, Bentner, Squillaci, Gibbs, AA etc. That’s a lot of changes but without no future of any meaning. AW won’t do it as he needs to prove at ols age he is still the smartest, which he is not and indicates signs of senility, so only one conclusion..AW out. I then hope that Gazidis will go and that panic-striken Kroenke sells his shares to Usmanov, who then invests in a young coach and quality players. My dream scenario.

  6. JAM says:

Arsene for me presents almost evrything what Arsenal is its good and bad, since i really started watching football Arsene was the one who was there. Moving to Emirates changed lots of things and meant lot of compromises and it was only him who got us through all that but the ‘Board’ got in a comfort zone because of him making money and they were happy with the idea Arsene picked up of youth but it had flaws like players couldnt come up well or stay with the club and i guess Arsene just realized that at the start of this season but got a moment late in doing that. He has another idea that January window is not the right time…..!
At the end we cant put all the blame on him, we played good against city but lost we played good against lots of other clubs but lost the second goal in sundays match who were the three players behind Arshavin? are they really that bad that we want to replace them? Where is the board? who is the board? what are their views?
In my Opinion ill atleast, atleaast, atleast see what Arsene does in summer transfer window. I may be disappointed or i may make a team of my own in FIFA 13

  7. thomas says:

so fabregas and nasri moving to a different club is a sin according to you MR WRITER. oh well done!!!!
so according to you they should be in arsenal for ever. players at the end of their career look at how many titles they have won. so staying in arsenal means
    TITLES
    FABREGAS 0
    NASRI 0
    so just wake up…

When did we stop being a title contending team to a team struggling to secure d fourth slot for champions league playoff. Pls note dt if AW isn’t buying world class players, it isn’t bcos he hasn’t been given money…it is bcos he believes he can prove d whole world wrong. Funny enough, no one in d Arsenal board is saying anything. What a shame

the powers that be at arsenal must realisen that for the team to be profitable and popular as is now is because of the particepation of both investors, represented by the board and management as well as the paying fans.ignoring their cries and advice is detrimental to the club

  14. Aussie Jack says:

Arsene Wenger has lost the confidence of the fan base and I can`t see this returning.Without knowing what goes on in the boardroom I would suggest that he`s taken a lot of stick which should have been directed elsewhere. So, Wenger resigning and bringing in a new manager (selected by the board)is not the total answer, major changes have to be made, possibly Usmanov taking advantage of the present situation. Either way we`re going to have the best stadium for a middle of the table club. Now, Mr.Kroenke surprise us.

May AW buy three quality players before transfer window is over-striker, CB and midfielder. Quickly sell Ramsey, AA, Djorou, Walcott. We have the finest deadwood in the primiership.

There is a lot of rubbish talked isn’t there?
I don’t like the way things are going (and frankly have been going for the last few years). I really don’t like the attitude that it is all Arsene’s fault, but if he’s been asked to be the front man in all of this, it’s about time he refused. That he is seen as the only ‘bad guy’ is partly his own fault – a Gallic ignorance and arrogance that De Gaul would have been proud of. That, in the end, may be Arsenes final downfall. But when we get to an understandable) discussion on who could sensibly do better, spare me the names of Rijkard or Mourinho. Rijkard, some of you may remember as a player who ran half the pitch to spit on Rudi Voeller’s head!! Real class eh? Mourinho claimed Arsenes was no more than a voyeur because he trained young boys. Real class eh? And yes I know SAF is just as arrogant – but as he wins things he can get away with it!

off topic, but why do all of you want mertesacker out? Yes, hes not fast at all but he still has many great attributes of a cb. He’s helped us so much with set plays and getting blocks and tackles in.

  24. Wenger is a joke says:

How many years has it been since Arsenal have had these defensive problems?

A good manager would have fixed these problems years ago!

Wenger needs to stop living in cuckooland. His job is that of a football manager. Stop pretending to be a jackass know it all when you can barely fulfill the basics of your actual day job.

3 of the biggest problem we have right now is 1)a good playin xi..but thats about it…no back-up whatsoever…2)all the injuries in the world seem to end up at arsenal 3)Wenger as forgotten the basic funda…form players in..average players out..when ur in form..it hardly matters u r young or old…rookie or experienced…end of the day ur playin football, tryin to get ball in the net…and if a person is creating chances…yy the hell u have to replace him!!!!

Thanks wenger as the most successeful arsenal maneger but time has changed we must try to keep our best player or to say keep a good squad for years. You can see that around 2007 and 08, we build a good squad flamini and hleb but they left, around 10 and 11 nasri and fabre left, so we have to keep a squad for years to aqquire team work so that we can challenge for tittles. But imagine, the players that suppose to leave are always there while the good ones are the ones always leaving imagine how to win trophies with this policies. THAT KROENKE MUST FUND OR LEAVE. THAT IS MY OPINION.

Look we all know that arsenal is a business model so the basics are to be clear
    - we have AGM every year profit -sustainable-revenue-top 4 is what moves through the Boardroom .
    - fabregas got fustr’ = non performing defence , hopeless buys ,could afford only 2 hnd prdts from ebay.
Wenger buys citroen and sells ferrari
    - van persie is lost in misinterpreted transactions .

  35. Ray says:

I had shouted many times that youth policy ALONE won’t work and years after years it showed that.

    Reason:
    1. Even a club like Barcelona knows that an extreme youth policy won’t work. That’s why they build up players like Messi but also buy in players in Dani Alves and David Villa.

    2. When the product is complete, Man City, Chelsea, Real and Barca just have to snift around grab them away. Just look at Nasri and Fabregas. All the investment gone into the drain, all the risk taken to give the youth a chance to play on the pitch wasted. Our bad results’ return of investment become nothing but cash for the owner. We ended up nothing as a school to produce the end product for rich clubs.

Wenger, listen to me, you are doing a good job in the youth, now what you need is to sign a few very good players, bite the bullet and splash the cash. You are almost there to make us as scary as Barcelona. What we need is just a few players who can groom our youth like Ramsey, Ox, Wilshere etc. These players’ advice and guidance on the pitch cannot be ignore and it is very important to us. Once we become Barca, we can groom and have the cash to buy established players. Even a 50-50 percent mix in the future will be good enough.

    Ganbate!
