Former Player Asks “Who Is Santos?”
Former Arsenal player Frank McLintock is not impressed with the new acquisitions this transfer period. The Gunners have added Gervinho, Park Chu Young, Santos, Arteta, Benayoun and Mertesacker to the squad but McLintock doesn’t think those players are up to scratch.
Speaking to TalkSport Radio he said: “I’m not impressed with the names, I hope they do very well. I’m not going to be out there looking to criticise, I want to give them all the support I can.”
McLintock doesn’t think the likes of Santos, a Brazilian international is good enough. He said: “If you look at Santos for instance, we know very little about him, he is a Brazilian, evidently he’s just come to the fore in the last three years.”
And it seems he would have preferred some local players to have a bigger British influence in the side. He said: “I would have bought two centre-halves for definite, I would have bought Cahill as well as Mertesacker.”
All in all the former player is pessimistic about the season and doesn’t think Arsenal can compete with the likes of Manchester City and United, saying: “I think realistically if they get in the top four that would be their best target. I can’t see them ever overtaking Manchester United with this team and I can’t see them overtaking Manchester City who just seem to be putting the jigsaw in place.”
It’s certainly a more negative view than most, as the majority of Arsenal fans are very happy with the new players that have arrived. Mertesacker, Santos and Arteta in particular look like they can help transform the side.

We have to back these players AW and the team now….they will have a point to prove and will give their all. It is what it is….we are lucky to have them, as AW would not have got them if all of our players had been fit and the 8 2 never happened. Also, it is not just about how good or bad these players are…it is about their experience and what they can do for the young players in the team. So it is time to stop this negative crap and back the new players.

sadly its a little premature to start casting aspersions towards players that are yet to wear the red in anger…
seems other ex-players (kenny sansom & the leg-end perry groves) have also been quick off the mark to doubt the wisdom of the deadline buys
for my part quality buys in…and in greater numbers than those that have left…all good

OK…first of all, Santos is a fast, creative, and GOAL scoring left back. A perfect fit for Arsenal’s attacking style. Secondly, if he plays for the Brazilian team(which is always ranked in top 3 worldwide) then he must be quality. Plus I hate the fact that a lot of media and people in general are saying we should have got Cahill instead of Mertesacker. Cahill is great, but way over priced(due to only having 1 year left on contract). Aside from playing in the BPL, Mertesacker has way more experience and credentials despite only being 1 year older. He is a regular German international starter who competed in 2 world cups and euro championship and performing well in both. Plus he was a captain, is tall, dangerous in air, and is an Arsenal FAN. Arteta also seams eager and motivated to the club since he took a PAYCUT to join. This, to me, shows he will give 110% on the pitch and is not motivated by money unlike other midfielders we’ve had in the past. Realistically we started off badly, BUT lets support the team and take it one game at a time…we are in the champions league…its still early…last year we were 11 points behind chelsea and still were able to over take them later. We already played 2 of the top four contenders and they all still havew to play each other. Arsenal will make up the ground…COME ON ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe Santos is a perfect fit. The fact that he’s a regular in the Brazilian set up (ahead of Marcelo and Bastos mind you) shows his quality. It’s to time to back our new players, the whole squad and Wenger as well. I think he did immensely well under a lot of pressure. Signing four players on the final day and one on the penultimate day of the transfer window is no easy task. In Arsene We Trust.

Im tired of these former players ( has been) and sport writers having a dig at our team, no matter what we do or what happens there is always someone to jump on our backs and the two biggest s@#t heads are ian wright and steven howard both of the sun newspaper. According to steven howard in todays sun arsenal did the worst bit of business during the window even qpr bought better players. Theres apparently question marks over the players we brought in. I cant understand why but why are they always quick to hav a shot at us. We need to start singing about these idiots on match days who want to have a dig at us, so they think twice about what they put in their colums

I am getting tired of this view that no trophies makes a team rubbish. 32 odd teams enter the Champions League each year. 31 of them (inc Man U) end up losers. Does this make them bad teams? Put yourselves in the position of a Wigan supporter, or Bolton. No disrespect to these fine people, but their chance of winning the PL is 0. A good year for them is avoiding delegation. Mid table is great year and a healthy profitable cup run a great adventure. These supporters stick with their teams through thick and thin and it is time all Gooners did the same and got behind the team. We all want to be the best and win trophies but not everyone can be a winner. If we could, the whole process would be devalued.
We compete with the best, without spending multiple millions we do not have. Not many can say that. Get behind the red shirt. Our time will come again.

All this talk about English is what has made the English players over priced. The effect is that they cannot play outside England and cannot win the world cup. You must play in the EPL to play for England, all the same style etc and cannot go far in any major competition. Countries that do well have palyers in all the major leagues but not the English team. We will assess the new Arsenal team when EPL resumes next week. At least Am sure Man u cannot beat this team by 8 goals.

I would like to get an honest answer/opinion of the JUSTARSENAL staff:
Given several (10-20) games together, Could/would the same team that played ManU improve into a formidable team??? They played as though they have no idea how to play top football…
Henry Lansbury, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlaine looked very good in under-21 international…. We want Arsene to spend, but now, if he had stuck to the YOUNG GUNS, down the road, would Arsenal be bettwe or worse???

The more publisity a player gets, normally, the price increases. This is why we got a brilliant player for only 8mil, Mertesacker. Fabregas, Nasri, Toure, Henry and clichy are all examples of this. Lets just wait till they get their first 5 games done, and then everyone can judge.

I am by no means a Wenger supporter. What Wenger obviously lacks is tactics and a grasp on reality. But what he does have is a second to none record in EPL transfers. Sure he gets it wrong sometimes but the simple fact that some people joke Arsenal is a feeder club clearly shows Wengers production line of cheap talent turned superstar obviously works.
Like I said, I’m no Wenger supporter and couldn’t stand this arrogant man since day one. But I will only ever criticise him for his lack of prep and tactics. For his loyalty to AFC and for his sacrifice of reputation I will applaud him. I suggest you do the same Frankie boy because I don’t remember hearing from you until you thought it was safe to kick a man while he is down.
This is our AFC and Wenger is our leader. Like it or not this is what we have – transfer window shut and no more changes. We must unite to stop these ignorant fools from dragging the name of our club through the mud. These stupid pundits need to stop. Grow a pair and put your neck on the line like Wenger does by taking a club manger position or go back to your impotent rhetoric that changes like the direction of the wind.

hehehe fingers crossed…. i for one and i guess any idiot would have picked Mertesacker over Cahill… even if both cost 9mil… fans asked for prolific… Per is definitely more prolific… and we can always pick up Cahill for free next year if he really wants to play for Arsenal… we want players willing to sacrifice for Gunners…Arteta showed great desire n passion, so much that he’s willing to take a pay cut… now THAT is something $$$ cant buy…Santos is no push over if he can be a Brazil regular…we all walk then run… so stop complaining before the new guys even played a single game…and u would have tot Frank an ex-arsenal ‘experienced’ player would be mature enough to think otherwise… guess not everyone gets wiser as they get older…maybe u should support another team Frank… cos Gunners dont need supporters like u and those fans who were AW haters before the transfer window closed… Gunners season just started… Come on u Gunners…!

I would say that Mr McLintock has his right to his opinion as do everyone else on here, based on his comments he’s being pragmatic about the team thus far. Personally Wenger & or the board have a lot to answer for the pressure to find quality replacements so late in the window was absurd for everyone involved. Even players that were targeted made comments regarding the late offers coming in to their clubs.
Players and fans feel more comfortable when their is a perceived plan Arsenal used to have one I
Assume as they have had historically had some success. But compared to Manchester United and Liverpool that success has been checkered at best. The plan for this team needs to be better thought out and strategically executed. Thus everyone involved can see the progress and have confidence that the results will come.
Arsenals fixation on youth is fundamental but tempered with this there has to be genuine quality & winning experience. For myself I have selected a squad based on the resources that were available i.e. Original 30 mill plus outgoing transfer funds of 60 mill.
GK Shay Given or Martin Steklenberg

Oops here’s my squad.
GK: Given 3.9 mill stg or Steklenberg 6.3 mill euro both have tons of experience and are tremendous goal keepers. Personally would have gone for Steklenberg who at 28 is just coming into his prime and look at what Van Der Sar did for Man U.
Central defenders: I know that everyone rates Vermaelen however he has been hit with a recurring injury which looks to be literally his Achilles. And when your out for a whole season you cannot be counted on to lead the line.
So for me Seb Coates & Simon Kjaer both these guys were available for less than 7 mill euro, Kjaer went to Roma on loan for 2 mill. Both these guys are really young are tremendous ball handlers, big Coates is 6’5 & Kjaer 6’2, very fast and can score. Plus they are actually genuinely good defenders especially Coates (watch some Copa America video).
For experience Per Mertersaker or Chris Samba, Per is probably the better value at 10 mill stg but if Arsenal can wait till January Cahill will probably be available for the same amount or even less. Why do Arsenal need to have so many CB’s well the first two are very cheap and offer huge potential. The need for an experienced CB is obvious Arsenal need an impregnable rock, who someone who turns up every game and knocks the crap out of the opposition. Man U has Vidic, Barca has Puyol and Arsenal has no one since Tony Adams & Martin Keown!
LB Marcel Schmelzer 10-15mill euro- think a 23 year old Phillip Lahm enough said but for me the buy of the summer was David Santon 20 yrs old 6’2 can play both flanks and in the middle. Newcastle got him for around 5 mill stg & this was a guy being touted as the next Paolo Maldini (no pressure) for whatever reason it didn’t work out for him at inter but talk about potential plus.
Now if my maths is correct Arsenal could have totally revamped their back line with world class talent for less 25 million euro not bad value plus we have 65-75 mill left in the kitty! Midfield next look forward to your comments

It’s amazing that the bulk of comments on here echo “who is this guy McLintock” well if Thierry Henry were to make some comments on here would some 10 year old remark who is this guy? A very smart man once said repeating the same thing over & over again & expecting a different result is the definition of Insanity!
For those 10 year old’s reading this his name was Albert Einstein & no he didn’t play for Arsenal! But he was one of the smartest people who ever lived, another of his quotes that I think sums up Arsenal’s current predicament is “A perfection of means, and a confusion of aims seems to be our main problem”.
What is the difference between Arsenal & Manu U, Real Madrid, Chelsea & of course Barcelona? Well at the moment there’s two distinct categories of club: Actively involved Multi-Billion dollar owner’s & Non-actively involved Multi-Billion dollar owner’s. Chelsea, Man City, Malaga, Paris Saint Germain

Arsenal is the latter Stan Kroenke is not only non-active he seems non-present & Ivan Gazidis the C.E.O went missing after making a very public statement about Arsenal’s intent in the upcoming summer transfer window.
So Mr Wenger was literally left holding the bag for all and sundry, I’m sure he appreciated that! Does Arsenal have issues on the field? Yes! Is it Arsene Wenger’s fault of course he’s the manager! Is it because of the lack of support, leadership and any sort of galvanizing vision to achieve success? Absolutely!
Arsenal’s board has a decision to make be a club who will whatever it takes to achieve success (tempered by financially sustainable budget) or milk the club by running the team on a shoe string budget (comparatively) charge exorbitant prices for ticket’s to a loyal fan base who know that they will be competitive but never realistically be in with a chance to win league, cup or European glory ever again!

We should respect the fact that everyone has a right to air his opinion. The way Frank Mc… spoke,he doesn’t appear like someone who doesn’t have the interest of the club at heart. But from my own point of view,I have belief in our new players just like my belief in Wenger’s ability hasn’t waned a bit.I prefer an average Arteta with so much determination to succeed at Arsenal that he had to accept wage cut to an excellent Fabric or Nastic whose minds are in Barca ‘n City while playing for us.GUNNERS FOR LIFE!
