Van Persie - lone striker?

Van Persie - lone striker?

The Arsenal injury list looked like it was dwindling last week, but then Theo Walcott got injured again on his first start of the season. Arsene Wenger thinks he will be out for 2 to 3 weeks today, after saying 3 to 4 weeks yesterday. This means that he could be ready for England’s friendly game against Brazil next month.

Thomas Rosicky was also a victim of the Birmingham match with a knee problem, but Wenger believes he will be okay for next weekend. With Eduardo still not ready to return after his setback, and Nicklas Bendtner still out after being injured in training last week, it is expected that Robin Van Persie will be left as the lone striker back in his native Holland tonight, unless Carlos Vela gets promoted to play alongside him.

Wenger was forced to use Eduardo against Olympiakos in the last Champions League match and as it backfired he may give him more recovery time this time around.

Wenger is more than confident that Van Persie can handle the job of main striker now that Adebayor has gone to Man City.

Wenger said: “He’s much stronger physically now,”.

“I think he’s a Van Basten type, by which I mean he’s a technical centre forward. He has that classy first touch, sharp movement and a short back-lift.

“I always thought he was more a first striker than second striker.”

Gael Clichy also picked up a knock, but has travelled to Alkmaar for tonights Champions League match and is expected to recover in time.

Sami Nasri and Lukas Fabianski are close to recovery and will get their first playing time this season in an Arsenal reserve match against Wolves tonight.

Vito Mannone made a costly error against Birmingham, and it is widely thought that Manuel Almunia will regain the goalkeepers jersey in Holland this evening. But with Fabianski playing with the reserves, Mannone will be on the bench.

Denilson is not expected back until next month and Djourou will be lucky if he gets to play another game this season.

Here is the full squad that has flown out to Holland for tonights game.

Vito Mannone
Manuel Almunia
Carlos Vela
Robin van Persie
William Gallas
Bacary Sagna
Kieran Gibbs
Thomas Vermaelen
Mikael Silvestre
Gael Clichy
Andrey Arshavin
Fran Merida
Jack Wilshere
Aaron Ramsey
Cesc Fabregas
Emmanuel Eboue
Abou Diaby
Alex Song

One player i am surprised to see is not on the list is Phillipe Senderos. Wenger said a few weeks ago that the Swiss International was now ready for selection, and after scoring twice for his country last week, he must be fit enough?

Sky news reported on Monday that Senderos was doubtful due to a knock he picked up in training. I think he will be able to play against liverpool in the carling cup.

  7. Adewunmi Ogere says:

there is need for arsenal to buy more player in january to make up for injury prone players and i favour Blase Matudi in the mid field. prof. should know the best in the attack

  8. es says:

    Vela and Arshavin.

So, RVP is our only fit striker unless we count the other fit striker and the other striker who’s played in the front three already this season and who’s prefered position is … umm … err … striker? Duh?

Argue that Arshavin isn’t fully fit by all means, but don’t leave him out for the sake of a headline. That would make you just as bad as the Daily Mail, something surely you can’t aspire to.

Personally, I can see AW playing Cesc, Song, Eboue, Ashavin, RVP, Diaby with Vela on the bench. But I’d prefer Vela from the start.
