Gaz: Who Arsenal should buy this summer, without breaking the bank!

Posted on June 09, 2011 by admin

Article on our lack or transfer activity thus far. By Gaz.

Damn I feel jealous right now, with Man Utd and Liverpool splashing the cash in big money deals for two of England’s brightest stars of the future. What makes it even worse is the fact that Wenger tried to hijack the Phil Jones deal, but failed to persuade him to join us over Man Utd.

Its disappointing, as surely Jones would have a much better chance of playing in our first team, as opposed to getting games ahead of Ferdinand, Vidic and Chris Smalling at Manchester United. So maybe it was a financial decision in the main, or maybe it came down to which team he thought has a better chance of winning silverware. Either way, it appears that Arsene Wenger is losing his pulling power at Arsenal after 6 years of no trophies.

I know there is a long time until next season gets underway, and transfers can take a while to finalize, but I am starting to seriously worry that we aren’t going to bring in the big names most Arsenal fans crave. I could be wrong, and in the next couple of days we may see a top class player turn up at the Emirates to sign, but I have to say that if this happens I would be very surprised.

I personally think that we are looking at mid July at the earliest, before we see any real activity on the transfer front for us, as Wenger doesn’t like to get deals done quickly for some reason. And by that time you will find that many of the names we have been linked with, will have already moved to some of our rivals, leaving us with a much smaller pool of players to pick from.

People keep talking about Gary Cahill as a potential signing, as he is big and English, with plenty of experience playing in the Premier League. They say that he is just the type of player we have been missing in recent years, and I totally agree with them. But the bottom line is, if Man City want him too, what chance do we actually have of getting him?

I mean, City will offer Bolton more money than we will, they will offer bigger wages to Cahill than we will, and surely they will be more likely to win trophies than we will next season, and for years to come. I think Christopher Samba is a much more realistic target, although Blackburn will fight even harder to keep hold of him now that they have sold Phil Jones. Taking that into account, maybe we could go for someone who nobody seems to mention anymore when speaking about transfer targets. Brede Hangeland is that man. He has all the qualities we are looking for right now, and he should be available cheaper than the other guys I named before.

In the centre midfield area, I haven’t heard too many rumours lately about who we might be interested in, but I honestly think we are missing a fantastic opportunity if we don’t try and sign Scott Parker. I know he gets injured from time to time, but for me he would be a great signing. His work rate, professionalism, and never-say-die attitude on the pitch, is something that we lack so much of at present, and I believe that if he came to Arsenal he would help Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey massively. He’s only 30, with possibly 5 or 6 years ahead of him in the game, so I don’t see any real reason why Wenger wouldn’t put a bid in for this guy. It makes sense to me, and I know that many of you will agree. I don’t want to see Scott Parker run out for Tottenham next season.

In the attacking area we are linked with a different player every day it seems, as Nicklas Bendtner is definitely on his way out. Gervinho looks like the one Wenger is pushing hardest for at the moment, but i’m not sure if he is the best option, especially if he is only available for £15 million. I would prefer Radamel Falcao to replace “the Great Dane”, but obviously he would cost considerably more in today’s market.

I heard recently that Wenger is going to Argentina to do some scouting at the Copa America tournament where Falcao will be playing, so hopefully the Colombian puts in some good performances and convinces our penny pinching boss to actually spend some of OUR money on him. Saying that, what more will Wenger learn about Falcao that he doesn’t already know? He is a goal scoring machine that would be a perfect partner for RVP up front, and strike fear into defences up and down the country. Its a no brainer to me, he must be signed.

Once again, I don’t want to see this guy wearing a Spurs shirt next season. If that happened then this world really is going mad……

Great post. I agree with everything u say but I wud also be very happy if we signed Benzema, if Falcao isnt available. One of these players, or both (i am dreaming) wud really give us a great chance of winning the title next season. I think Gervinho is a replacement for Nasri, as I hear Manchester United are bidding for him and he wants to go there. TRAITOR!

Gaz i believe that wenger is trying his hardest to make transfers such as Chris Samba and Gary Cahill which i heard we were in talks with. And also players like Alex oxlade-chamberlain and Gervinho. Even on this website it says Gervinho is on his way ? I hardly believe a player who carried (And Hazard) is a a player no one has heard of and looks almost certain and the same with Chris Samba as the Gooners Blog explains is very close to a deal. And gervinho is set for Arsenal seeing he said he wanted to play champions league and liverpool and newcastle cant offer it we will get him ? Good points in this article but in seasons past hardly any speculation has happened since the last day of the transfer season and we got tweedle dee and tweedle dum kosieclny and squllaci i believe we will see big names such as gervinho gary cahill and eden hazard just wait and see cheers.

There are two reasons why you have not seen many rumours in the papers so far:

    1) Wenger, rightly, plays his cards close to his chest so that he is in a stronger negotiating position. This is for many reason, e.g if he does not reveal transfer talks with the press, the selling club don’t know how many other options he has.

    2) The international transfer window does not open until July 1st. Until then, you can only buy players from England, who are VERY overpriced. Just look at £16m for Jordan Henderson, he is ON PAR with Rosicky. Just look at these stats from THIS SEASON:-

    Henderson: Started-38 games; Scored-3 goals; 5 Assists
Rosicky: Started-20 games; Scored- 1 goal; 6 Assissts

The stats dont lie, and this has been Rosicky’s worst season and Henderson’s best. Ask this, how much would Rosicky do for??

    ————-

So…. is it any wonder Wenger doesnt usually buy from England: they are too overpriced, the SAME quality can be bough from overseas for much less.

sell: Arshavin, rosicky, Almunia, Squillaci, Clichy, Gibbs, Eboue, Fabregas, Chamack, Bendtner, Denilson, Vela.
    money about 125m
buy: Taarabt, Vertonghen, Aly Cissokho, Lorenzo de Silvestri, Parker, Demba Ba, Gameiro, Melo, Hazard
    money about 100m

But thats never gona to happend. I now that. We need do kick Wenger out of Arsenal!

I think i know why some of our recent signings havent went too well eg chamakh and squillaci…. the current group of players we have were all brought in roughly around the same time as all our former winners left, ever notice how players like flamini hleb and adebayor could have been great for the club? they were all good at their time and i think its cos they had a chance to play with the glorious gunners of the early 2000s and why the like of rvp cesc sagna clichy are such important players to the team, because they got to play and train with the amazing players we had, unlike any new signings we bring in now as the players whove been here longest generally didnt spend much time or no time with great players like vieira and henry so i think our problems lie in the fact wenger let go of too many important players as these 6 painful seasons have went on i mean 6 years ago we had a virtually completely different team unlike many other squads in the league. its incontinuity. i think arsene needs to begin rebuilding the club now, and its not that big a deal. look how quickly liverpool rebuilt in the 2nd part of this season and they have a good chance of a champions league spot, at present it looks like we could be shunted down to 5th next year

i really cannot see wenger siging parker or cahill but surely he will strengthen in these areas. imagine wenger decided both that frimpong and bartley should be our cover?? i can see it happening!! both good young players but come on there nowhere near ready for our first team!
lets just see if fabregas and nasri stay because if both go then wenger will have to spend big!!

  12. Still Trusting says:

What I think is we need Sakho and Samba at the back, lassana diarra in mid field, if spurs sign him for 12 mill it’ll be as bad as missing out on VDV and up front hazard and Benzema, leaving then I would have almunia, clichy, denilson, Nick and Vela. If cesc goes then a big signing will have to be made to get another world class player. I think that would make arsenal into the best team in England and capable of winning things.

cahill and samba as CB paring then sell clichy and put vermaelen out on the left.

keep nasri and sell fabregas. bring in hazard.

sell bendtner and vela and buy benzema and chamberlin.

    play a 4132

    chesney
    sagna cahill samba vermaelan
    song
    nasri wilshere hazard
    RVP benzema
thats 4 signings. costing around 70 to 80 million with around 40 million for cesc, 10 for bendtner, 6 for clichy and about 4 for vela and 2 for lansbury and say 4 for denilson and 3 for rosicky 3 million.thats like 70 million or so…we only end up making a 10 million loss so overall we only spend about 10 million.
you also have a replacement for each position. E.G….

    fabianski
    jenkison djouro konscielny gibbs
    frimpong
    ox-chamberlin ramsey ryo
walcot chamakh if i was wenger i would do this but we all know that this will be another disappointing summer :-(

@JEZZA. Money talks mate, and Man City have tons of it. Its sad, but its true. They have just won the FA Cup, after going over 30 years without silverware, so it can’t just be a coincidence that all of a sudden they find success again.
In 2004, after our invincible season, we could have attracted almost any player we fancied in the world, but we never really took advantage of that. Nowadays it seems that many players would prefer to stay at their current club, rather than join us, and wait for our richer rivals to make a bid. This is mainly because we don’t win trophies anymore, and we don’t pay huge wages.

it is not about breaking the bank or not it’s about buying the right payer…experience big tall and fighting spirit and they are on the market but the arsenal shit bosses including wenger are flirting with them and end up buying £1m players…£1m for someone like me who earn £280 per week is massive but in the football club like arsenal… come on …put the entree ticket to £10 per game and fine you can buy payer for £500 i don’t mind…i’m so upsett

  18. andy bishop says:

In 2005 we could not have attracted any player in the world..we could not afford them. We had a new stadium to build. Thats why the invincibles were broken up so quickly…experienced players on high wages. Nasri is trying to break the Arsenal wage structure..personally he can go if he refuses whats offered. Look what happened in Henrys last year 110K per week plus a one off payment that had him on the equivalent of 220K per week. He only played half the season. Just because you pay big money it does not guarantee success. So we sell all our players and get an optmistic 125 mill spend 100 mill and have to pay them more. What if that lot loses? sell them all again?

    Arsenal till I die!

This current crop, despite all the negative press were just a couple of players short of becoming a great team.

Though when you see L/pool putting in a £5m bid for clichy – what the hell?

Suddenly it looks like the vultures are circling – just waiting to strip the carcass clean after the predators have taken the meat (cesc/nasri).

If we let both Nasri & Cesc go this summer, it will be the end of an era.

We were badly wounded when we failed to win at least the league cup this season. We now can’t get the players we want – because we can’t out bid or offer the wages certain teams can.

Worse than that the best players don’t see us as an option. That’s why we’re left with talk of two african players who will disappear to the ACN. As good as Samba and Gervinho are, what’s the point if they’re missing in Jan 12.

If these players leave – the best we will hope for is the odd domestic cup win over the next 10-15 years – as we would have pushed Wenger out the door by the end of next season – when we don’t qualify for the CL.

That’s not being pessimistic, it’s being realistic!

    I’m Arsenal till I Die!

i feel the same Gaz, but like you said, in todays market Falcao is far to expensive because of his form, rating, goals etc. And buying him would mean that Wenger is a hypocrite, so he would never splash the cash for him.

In all honesty, a signing that valued more than 15mil is unrealistic for Wenger (but i hope im proved wrong).
