Gazidis – We WILL spend money on defence (And no Cesc bids)

Posted on July 19, 2011 by admin

The Arsenal Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gazidis has promised the fans that that the Gunners DO have substantial funds to invest and they still intend to strengthen the “areas of weakness” before the end of the transfer window.

As every Arsenal fan (and his dog) know that it has been the defence that has been the problem for some years now, we can only assume that he is talking about bringing in Christopher Samba or Gary Cahill (or a cheaper equivalent!)

Gazidis said: “We still will be active in this window,”

“We haven’t finished our business at all. We’re just not conducting it publicly; we’re working hard privately.

“I’m was out in Asia because I could be with Arsène for an extended period of time and think very, very carefully about strategy and targets.

“We understand where the weaknesses have been. Financially we’re in a strong position, we have resources to spend. We’re certainly not sitting there saying ‘let’s hold back on our resources’ for some reason, why would we?

“The resources are there. We’ve got a substantial amount of money that we can invest. The important thing for us, which can be frustrating, is not doing it only in response to a public clamour but in a way that can positively impact our performance next year. That’s the focus now.”

So they are not buying defenders because the fans are asking for it, but because the team NEEDS it. Haven’t the fans been saying that for years!

Meanwhile the Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has told the world that Barcelona HAVE NOT returned with any more bids for Fabregas since their derisory £26m offer, but he did admit that they WOULD listen to any serious offer from them if they actually made a formal approach.

Hill-Wood said: “I am not sure how keen they are. There are still stories in the press, but they don’t talk to us,”

“They’ve made one offer, which works out at around £26m, but that was ages ago.

“But at the moment our situation is very straight-forward: we don’t want to lose him.

“Obviously if they come up with an offer which was a very good offer we would have to think about it.

“We have told them a number of times that what they are proposing is unacceptable and yet they haven’t moved on it.

“I don’t approve of what they are doing, but unfortunately it seems the way of the world right now.”

So perhaps Wenger will manage to hang on to Fabregas and Nasri, AND strengthen the team in defence. Maybe we should start counting our pennies and putting a few pence on Arsenal to win the Premiership?

I would rather keep Nasri (with a newly signed contract) for Cesc’s role and take the money for Cesc and his hamstrings … which are not likely to improve.

Sbasiclly we are keeping a captain that dosnt want to stay, a player that dosnt want to sign a new cntract and is courting other clubs, and average players that want to leave, but we cant offload them ebcause they are on 50+ for average players. Good ship you are running there wenger, regood ship. just makes you wounder what the team mentality and will be next year. Hell it must be even more unstable than last year. Wenger really has lost his marbles.

Get ya wad out and sign up Eden Hazard! It’s mind numbingly obvious!!!! We have Gervinho, and Hazard will happily follow. £25m…£30m…£35m…whop cares. They are great together plus Cesc and Nasri will pay for the move. Dead wood sinks a boat.

So which is it? You plan to buy or not? These guys need to sort out their PR as they contradict themselves on a daily basis.

  17. Nickw says:

I’m not sure he said anywhere in that interview that they would be strengthening the defense specifically, just areas of weakness. We can only hope that means the defense but AW came out last week saying that he thought the defense was strong so I wouldn’t count on anything Gazidis says as proof they intend on buying a new centre back. In fact I wouldn’t believe a word he says as they’ve been saying stuff like this for years and done nothing. However we should wait to the end of the window and judge them then, however frustrating it is to wait that long.

  18. hanenyo says:

I think it’s all mind games. They are making us believe that they will strenghten the weak areas. Honestly I doubt it, this has been Wenger/board tactic: pull wool over the fans eyes. At the of the transfer window they will come out to say “We can’t find players of Arsenal qualities at a reasonable price or they will bring in players like Squillachi to appease fans.

If we do have an awful season, Cesc and Nasri leave and we drop to midtable, it would be very interesting to see how many fans remain.

  20. Ray says:

No one tell you guys the last sentence from Ivan should be “but we have a wage structure and purchasing policy (may be made by some accounts people base on paper rather than reality) and we will respect it”?

So, at the end, it might be “the club where our target located, either set a unacceptable price range for us or the target club wanted a player like Rosicky as part of deal, so the deal collapse”.

  22. Gazidis,Arsenal also has a problem with goal-keeping, midfield and striking, not defence alone,so you should buy goalkeepers[2],defenders,midfielders and strikers.I advice Arsenal to buy any 2 of the following goalies;Tim Howard, Mark Schwarzer,Maarten Stekelenberg,Scott Carson,Paul Robinson e.t.c.
    Defenders: buy defenders like Chris Samba,Jose Enrique, Titus Bramble,Luke Young,Gary Cahill,Scott Dann,Phil Jagielka,Stephen Warnock,Elokobi,Leighton Baines,e.t.c.
    Midfielders:buy midfielders like Gareth Barry,Edivaldo, Scott Parker,Dede Ayew,Gary Gardner,Barry Bannan,Ryan Shawcross,Michael Bradley,Eljero Elia,Arturo Vidal, Emmanuel Riveire,Nilmer, Jurado,e.t.c.
    Strikers:buy strikers like Stephen Ireland,Wayne Routeledege,Per Mertesacker,Hugo Rodallega,Hulk,Ricardo Fuller,Jonathan Walters,Andy Johnson,Bobby Zamora,Jason Roberts,Victor Moses,Mamady Sidibe,Kenwyne Jones,Jamein Francis,e.t.c.
