Gibbs and Djourou added to injury list ahead of Liverpool game

Posted on August 17, 2011 by admin

The Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has invested heavily in his team this year and is expected by the new owners at Anfield to be challenging for a Champions League place this season, and this weekends game against Arsenal will be a big test of their credentials.

But Arsenal are looking decidedly shaky going into the game. Arsene Wenger should really concentrate on keeping his best side fit for the return leg of the Champions League Qualifier at Udinese, but he can hardly afford to field a weakened team against Liverpool.

Gervinho and Alex Song are already on the missing list for both the Liverpool and Man Utd games after their “over-reaction” last week at Newcastle and with Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere out injured, and of course the departures of Nasri and Fabregas, the midfield is looking weaker and weaker by the minute.

Now the news has come in that both Kieran Gibbs and Johann Djourou suffered hamstring problems in last night´s game against Udinese and are set to be on the sidelines this weekend as well. Arsenal released a statement which said: “Kieran Gibbs and Johan Djourou both picked up minor hamstring problems during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Udinese on Tuesday night.

“Gibbs was replaced by Djourou at half time and the Swiss defender was in turn replaced by Carl Jenkinson 10 minutes later.

“Both players could miss Saturday’s game against Liverpool.”

God help us if anything happens to either Thomas Vermaelen or Laurent Koscielny in the meantime, or Arsenal could be subject to the “Curse of the Squid” next week…..

Our game style is definitely a problem that needs super-urgent addressing. Too many injuries happen too often.

Of course other teams suffer injury, of course their players are sidelined as well, but not as so many at the same time or so often as with Arsenal.

Why has no one done anything about this obvious problem?

Everyone has to remember that Arsenal are just going through a dip. Man U didn’t win the title for 26 yrs at one point in time, Liverpool 21 yrs and Man City 35yrs and look where they are now! Sometimes trophies are hard to come by, and the one thing not to do is panic when we have the right manager. In the last six years, it’s been clear that Arsenal have not been able to spend huge amounts on the team because they’ve invested £390million in a stadium to set themselves up for the next 60 years, not for the next six years. They’ve invested in the infrastructure of the club and it’s a sustainable model. That’s why in 50 years’ time, Arsenal will still be a great football club.

  19. There is no hiding the fact that we need a defensive holding midfield player,at least one quality centre back(Cahill, needs to be bought now ),and a quality left back(what was wrong with Enrique)? And we want a central creative playmaker.

The main thing was our effort and the willingness to play as a team. That is the only way to respond to losing Fabregas and Nasri. It will not be enough for the whole season but encouraging. Sagna, Ramsey and Vermaalen were key. Walcott looked tuned in. Chamakh is clearly not the player we all thought he might be. Rosicky huffed and puffed and looked shattered when he came off. Song and Gervinho being suspended is plain stupidity. Same old same old with the injuries..Djhorou and Gibbs(who has impressed). Team for Liverpool..anyones guess: Wilshire doubt, Gibbs doubt, No Gervinho or Song

Well Arsene would learn now but nothing seems to teach him a lesson. The free fall after carlin cup loss to birham – no lesson. Lost automatic CL place- no lesson. Nasri, clichy, fab etc insist on leaving- no lesson. Perseason injuries to key players-no lesson. 3match ban for 2 key players on season opener-no lesson. Further injuries to Djorou, Gibbs 3 days later-no lesson. ALL fans begging for reinforcement considering previous experience-no lesson. Reasons are ready: my captain and myself will be in Italy next week-no shaking. Liverpool and man u will be taught a lesson – games are not won by spending money. Remember, I am arsene wizard, I achieve the impossible. The board is always behind me.

this is now getting ridiculous. wenger has just said on arsenal.com that getting Joel campbell is “a gamble worth taking”. when is wenger going to realise that now is NOTt the time to gamble with so many fans already fed up with him and his transfers. wenger said: “it is important to look at quality, not the price tag”. I have had enough of this because I just don’t understand why he won’t buy more experienced players and splash the cash for one season and hopefully make up the money by actually getting a trophy or proceeding in the CL. last night was clear that we need more players. not only do we need at least one other centre back, but now we probably need a left back. furthermore, we are in desperate need of someone creative in midfield!! yesterday was appalling. there was no creativity, no one successfully getting past their man with flair and basically no skill. we were lucky yesterday but, knowing arsenal, this luck won’t last. wenger get a damn centre back and stop putting it off when u should have sorted this out months ago! get two creative midfielders at whatever cost and possibly a left back. a fast, Ronaldo-type winger would be nice as none of our players take anyone on, preferring to pass backwards when on the wing. wenger, I am not the only frustrated arsenal fan out there so do it quick.

I’m really pissed that he doesnt seem to be fixing our problems right now, but any of you who think this is going to be the end for Arsenal are stupid. It was obviously gonna be tough for a while after the move but putting £390m into investing for a new stadium is what will keep us safe for years. Arsenal and Man Utd will always be big clubs now. It’s clear Wenger and the Board are too focused on finishing our debt problems and are being ignorant to the problems right infront of them. Yes we’ll probably fall this year but I honestly dont think we’ll be waiting too long for a trophy, especially as the only two clubs bringing in more money than us are Utd and Madrid and we arent in shitloads of debt or spending more than we earn like they are…

On 01/09/2011 Wenger and Ivan need to be honest to the fans. Either –

    1) They would have made the big signings they themselves mentioned at the close of last season and should clearly explain then the direction they are taking for the future – none of this ‘we were very close last season’ crap because Mr Wenger you won’t close. You finished fourth. Thats 3 positions away.

    2) They do not make signings – Firstly apologise for misleading the fans. Then clearly explain that this team is no back at where we were 5 years ago and that it will take another 5 years to get to where we were last season under the clubs current policy.

Too many restless fans now mostly because they were told money would be spent to strengthen and instead the team is actually weaker. At least with honesty many fans will appreciate the situation.

I don’t understand most of the above comments, and i’ve been wondering if we were watching the same game. I think our defense was superb, our midfield was strong(except when song became a little bit tired on the final minutes of the second half), but our attack is not dangerous enough with chamakh upfront. It’s been a long time since i saw arsenal play with not just creativity, but resilience and killing intense. Oke, the result was not optimal, but every player played with their heart. Rosicky was superb, the only thing missing was his long distance shoots. The back four were superb, even jenkinson, except djurou (a little shaky).
All we need now is another cb to get rid “the curse of the squid”, and put another striker above chamakh in the pecking order (bendtner, afobe, or anyone else please).

    Players Wenger should buy:

Moussa Sow has said he wants to leave Lille and play at Arsenal. Highest scorer in Ligue 1 last season. Wenger, BUY HIM. He WANTS to play for YOUR team and he can score goals. 25 goals in fact. He’s only 25 years old and won the league with Gervinho so there’s automatic chemistry there. He can fill in for RvP or play as a second striker.

Juan Mata is your answer to Samir Nasri but he’s smarter and like Moussa Sow, he’s experienced but not old at the age of 23. Great left winger and well within your price range.

Jadson is experienced and is a centre-attacking midfielder. You already want him, buy him.

Those three players are likely to cost less than 50,000,000 pounds and Arsenal well and truly has this much money! In fact, Ramsey is so good now that you don’t even need Jadson.

I don’t know who but buy a solid defensive mid-fielder to pair up with Alex Song. Arsenal needs to be able to play defensively if we want to go far in the Champions League. Win the home game, draw the away game. But preferably win it. Simple.

Sakho is young and a brilliant LB/CB and he is one of the youngest captains in the history of football. Buy him.

Everything you say is untrue. Everyone knows that Cesc left because he loves Barca, and he gave his support to Wenger after leaving. Stfu with your lack of ambition bollocks. Na$ri’s a greedy bast*rd and Cesc left to go home. Simple. People who love the club (Dixon, Henry, Parlour) know that Wenger’s still the man. Also, Wenger came along in 1996, and we won the league the year after. Before that we hadn’t won or come second in the league for seven years. Also, by “working mans club” you mean boring, 1-0 Arsenal of the 70s and 80s right? Well f*ck that, i like nice football, and financial solvency.

@gunner what proof do you have that what I say is untrue?? Everyone dose NOT know cesc left to be with his boyhood club, it is partly true that cesc wanted to return to baca at some point in his carear but not at 24 the peak of his carear, if we had a ambitious manager who showed that he was serious about winning trophies, cesc would still be here as would Nasri. Both these players and others were frustrated at as nearly winning trophies, year after year Wenger would promise he would put it right and strengthen the team with world class players, he always failed to do that as he has done this summer. Players and fans know that Wenger was a great manager, as Tyson was a great boxer but in time both lost it, they become washed up and and useless!! We need a new manger, a hungry world beater now, not sum old has been. I prefer as to win 1-0 then lose 5-4 and play great football, the reason for that is that I am a winner as are the vast amount of Arsenal fans. (except AKB’s like you) it’s not about the £££££ it’s about winning and making history, no body remembers nearly winning,

He will always be the best person I have met in football. [And] I am sure that they will be a strong team again – they are one of the biggest teams in the world. They will be OK without me as they were without Vieira, without Henry, without Bergkamp.”
Henry on wenger: ”I know some people have had a go at Arsene recently. But I wouldn’t want to be the one to have to be the manager after him.
“The Boss changed the face of the club and, for me, I would keep him here for life.
“I know he got a bit of stick recently but I thought it was unfair and hopefully they can change that this year.
