II think it is safe to say that most Arsenal fans were far from happy with the summer transfer window until Arsene Wenger and his transfer team pulled off the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. That last minute deal has got all the newspapers, football websites, pundits and commentators talking, but it doers seem to have made people forget about the other three new Arsenal players.
I can understand why Gooners were unhappy before Ozil was signed, but let’s take another look at them and see what we’ve got. Mathieu Flamini has professed that he feels like he never left the club, despite having been in Italy for five seasons with AC Milan. That is testament to the feeling of stability and continuity at the Emirates, and it also means that he can slot straight back into the team.
Wenger has said that it was Flamini’s fitness and his desire to win that made him offer the midfielder a second spell at the club, and his performance when coming on in the north London derby seems to back that decision. Are their better players out there in Flamini’s position? Almost certainly, but would they have fitted so effortlessly into the Arsenal side? Almost certainly not. The fact he was fee was a nice bonus.
Emiliano Viviano is a well rated keeper who performed admirably for Fiorentina in Serie A last season, helping them to 4th in the Italian league. He seems to be good enough to push Szczesny without pushing him out, while getting him on loan means we can sign him permanently next summer if he impresses, or release him if he doesn’t.
Finally we come to young Yaya Sanogo. We must remember he is only 20-years old and has already had his career interrupted by injuries. Despite this, and the fact he has been playing in the lower French leagues with Auxerre, he was the main man for the France under 21 international team. He has got huge potential, but a lot of work to do. However, there is very little pressure on him and he has got brilliant support at Arsenal. It may be a year or two before we start to see his true talent, but I am sure we will.
