Have Arsenal really signed the Argentinian superstar Ricky Alvarez?

Posted on May 22, 2011 by admin

There have been numerous Arsenal rumours around the web stating that the Gunners have signed the free-agent Ricky Alvarez whose contract is up at Velez-Sarsfield in Argentina.

He is currently playing for Sarsfield in the Copa Libertores and the Clausura and (so it goes) he can’t reveal the deal until the club are out of the competition and he is officially a free agent.

The 23 year-old is a very speedy left-winger or attacking midfielder and is said to be one of the best free-agents available in the South American market.

But have Arsenal really signed a “pre-contract” with Alvarez to join up at the end of the Argentinian season?

Well it seems that all the reports in English on the web only come from different versions of Goal.com, plus a small mention in the Daily Mail. I did find one report on a Spanish-language website, that may have been the originator of the rumour, and they quoted the source as Fox News.

A search of Fox News did not reveal any results (in English or Spanish) and I am beginning to think that Goal may have made the whole thing up.

It certainly IS possible that Wenger has secured a player described on SoccerByIves as “Ricky Alvarez continues to emerge as one of the biggest stars in Argentinian soccer”, but it is also worth taking note that Arsenal Sarandi are another team in the Argentine Clausura and perhaps the rumour started from there…..

So in conclusion, I doubt that it is true, because it would certainly have been clarified on more reputable websites than Goal!

Weren’t they first to ‘declare’ the Vermaelen and Koscielny deals correctly? You never know……. But is he a superstar as the headline suggests?

Its a mixed thing. I searched fox news no news of him at all. But on the other hand they made mention of him having an italian passport, and arsenal satander are lower table so how can such a good playa decide to sign for a lower table. I wish some one could just ask wenger about him?

Goal.com are the biggest liars on the internet. I’m pretty sure that their philosophy is to make up as many stories possible and then close their eyes, cross their fingers and hope one of them actually happens.

I would be embarrassed to work for them, knowing full well that anything i was writing was a massive, big, fat juicy slice of fiction.

I think he has signed for the gunners. Velez are currently in second place while “Arsenal” are at the bottom, so I doubt Ricky would be that stupid to sign for a worst team, especially with his talent

lol…i got so carried away by this against my better judgement. well, it still could be true, but i’m starting to think it’s not. we got punked; thanks bloggers, spin doctors and misinformers of the world.
probably more unlikely given how much depth we have in the midfield and there are still players like JET to come in.
he’s a classy player and would be a great fit for Arsenal though. we lack this kind of player.

I searched fox news and found it ok, seemingly it has been a done deal according to all reports, but u just never know another bleacher report today also saying it is a formality, he looks a good player but in the argentine league, but hes free so y not another body wont hurt, maybe he has a bit of something to add to us, that is of course if the reports are true, it all points to it being true.

He is twenty three. So if he is so good why hasn’t he been chased by other clubs publicly. I just feel we are getting him because he is free :S but hey I have seen these pulled off before. I would rather try to poach Hazard, Affelay someone like that.

  29. TrueGooner says:

Well if Arsenal have signed him it will mark the start of expanding Arsenal’s play down the wings as opposed to through the middle all the time.

One thing Arsenal has lacked all season are natural born wingers, people who’ll support the LB & RB as well as pushing forward to support the play.

We may have Walcott but his technique is poor, fair enough he can finish but he’s lost when someone is ahead of him and he’s in a tight space.
If he can improve on his close ball technique, strength and decision making he’ll be a superstar next season.

It’s like if you look at Man U, one reason why they’ve seen so much success is because of Nani, Fabio, Rafael & Park Ji Song all player who are great wingers and they’ve cotributed so many assists, that’s why they outscore teams with ease.

  30. Oisky says:

SPENZA, I agree you can’t say he should go becasue his hearts somewhere else. It’s his job to play his best no matter where he is. However, if we get 50 for him I’d happily see him go, he’s a great player but lets be honest he’s a poor captain, we need a real leader, we could do with a couple good players with the money and I wanna see Rambo and Wilshere develop a partnership. It’s not like we fell apart without him earlier in the season, he’s just one player and a whiny one at that.

  31. Oisky says:

TRUEGOONER, the problem with Wenger is he plays central players as wingers who don’t want to be there like Nasri and Arshavin. If Walcott hadn’t been shoved on the wing even though he’s a striker he could have been an henry type. Playing a ball down the centre to him would be lethal but shoving him on the wing he’s stifled

  32. TrueGooner says:

    @ Oisky

So true, that’s Arsene’s problem he believes he can work the magic he did with Henry all the time, which is stupid TBH.
I mean how he would even think of putting bendtner out wide is beyond me, the same with play Jack Wislhire as a defensive mid is beyond me as well, he’s clearly an attackive midfielder and playing him in holding only limits his play.

Sometimes I really don’t know what Arsene is thinking, like this whole season surely he should have noticed how isolated van persie was when he played as alone striker this season.

Let’s just hope Arsene reworks his tactics and brings the quadrouple to the emirates next season.

but why would ricky alvarez move form a his club, who are top of the league and in the south american champions league, to arsenal de sarandi, are not as good as his current club?

wouldnt it be a step backwards?

plus, like someone said, goal.com broke the kosicleny and vermaelen deals and are usually accurate when it comes to arsenal fc

  36. Tobey says:

South Americans are like kings of dribbling there footwork with speed and vision is why there players are dominant
maybe arsenal want that south american flair in them(Tevez di maria messi alves neymar) Tevez was unknown at one time when he was in Argentina and he is a superstar today
Alvarez is a big thing and AW hasnt done this just because he is free but to increase good depth without blasting all our cash and letting us use our money on bigger players

  37. Mark says:

    - He’s a great dribbler, technically gifted and prone to individual play. Tough naturally an attacking midfielder, he has played mostly as right winger or centre midfielder during this season. He has also a strong middle shot.
    - He has a contract due June 2013, so it won’t be a free transfer.
    - Saying that Arsenal de Sarandí could sign him is as ilogical as saying that Fulham could sign Rooney (on a much smaller scale, of course, but just as ilogical).

I’m a Vélez fan, from Argentina, so I know what I’m talking about.
