Hill-Wood confirms Jagielka talks – and Wenger reluctantly agrees
The Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has made public the fact that the Gunners are in negotiations with Everton about their 28 year-old defender Phil Jagielka, and Wenger himself also admitted that the Gunners had yet to agree a price with David Moyes team.
Hill-Wood said last night: “We have made a bid for him but they didn’t think it was enough,”
“It is very busy but nothing is actually happening.”
“We are trying to buy a few players but it isn’t going to happen overnight.”
Wenger was also asked about Jagielka yesterday, and only reluctantly gave out a little information. He was specifically asked about the rumours that Arsenal were close to signing Juan Mata as well as Jagielka, and he replied:
“Our business will be done sooner rather than later but it is difficult to speak about any individual player because that makes things difficult,” said Wenger. “I cannot complain about other clubs talking about our players and then do the same.
“I like Mata, but that does not mean we will buy him. The other player [Jagielka] is under contract at Everton. If we want to buy a player, we need first the agreement of their club.
“At the moment the rules are constructed in a way where it is basically forbidden to speak about one individual player. I know that not everybody respects it, but I try to do as well as I can.”
Perhaps Wenger ought to remind his chairman about the rules before he goes into a press conference!

Mata will be a fantastic signing.
I don’t know much about Jagielka, but personally I would prefer Cahill because he is taller, younger, not that much more expensive, and has the talent to become one of the best defenders in the EPL. That said, Wenger buying a new defender is always a bonus

Arsene Wenger has to get JUAN MATA and PHIL JAGIELKA into the team[ ARSENAL FC]now.One other area Wenger has to look at is the Defensive midfield, Song will be going for the Nations cup so LUCAS BIGLIA must also come in as a Defensive midfielder. Fabregas and Nasri must not leave the team now, they have to play with the new players [ Juan Mata,Phil Jagielka,Lucas Biglia and a striker [ becourse Gervinho will be go for the Nations cup ] for at lest a year or two. Mata should be bought and the captain band should be given to Robin Van Persie no matter what end the fabregas saga.
captain-ship is for players with commitment an influence in a team. RVP has taken over that from confused fabregas.

You can’t just go out and buy players. The current club has to want to sell don’t forget, And the incoming player has to want to come too.. For them its not just a footballing change, it’s a life change if they are from another country.

When asked about two particular attacking players that Arsenal have been linked with in recent weeks, Wenger was full of admiration.
“Benzema? Gervinho? Both are very interesting players. Benzema has a footballing mind like Zizou.”

i dont trust wenger when i comes to buying defenders i think cahill is the better, porbably only get 2/3 years out of jags, cahill would be a major player for us for 6/7 years.
Mata on the other hand is a world class player great buy for under 20mil

What I gather from this is: 1) they have agreed a fee for mata, 2) wenger is in talks with mata as he doesn’t want to talk about like other clubs doand 3) tottenham r cunts 4 trying to block this deal.

And for the record Harry redknapp has said numerous times that he hasn’t got money to spend so I doubt he wants Mata. To raise those sort of funds he’ll have to sell modric, and if he does he’ll need a creative CM to replace him, and Mata is more of a winger. The reason we’re after him is only cos nasri can be moved into the middle. People should sit back and think about the bigger picture instead of believing everything they read.

Why are we bothering with jags when we clearly know that samba and cahill are better defenders. Samba is a man mountain, he might not be the best defender with the ball at his feet but he will give us presence and damn leadership at the back. We would go to places like stoke and not be worried about delaps long throw cause he would head it away. Did you see his performance against west ham last season, he threw his body in the way. That’s the type of defender we need not the donkeys that we have now apart from TV. Cahill can be the Ferdinand of our defence. Wenger should sign these two rather than Jags. We still need in my opinion maybe 4 players (2 centre backs, left back, holding midfielder and creative one). If we sign quality not crap like squilshit and koschelshit then we’ve got a chance this season but knowing wenger he will make some excuse. Everyone knows Samba and Cahill wanna come so spend the money bringing them!

Well with our current players (Walcott, Diaby & Frimpong) dropping like flies at the moment,and others already gone, Mr Wenger needs to get some new players soon. Why does he fart about so much, when the teams ahead of us have been buying since the “window” opened.
Somebody needs to get a grip and soon or we’re gonna be hard pressed to make the top four, never mind the Champions League.

I agree, Squalaci is terrible. Two things i learned today from the game – Troare will be better than Clichy and young Frimpong is very exciting, Gervenho looks terrific. The downside is it seems we can’t defend once the first goal goes in. Wenger can’t it right too. God help us!

@Richie, I don’t think the goals we conceded were down to squillaci. For the first goal I think the keeper should of done better, i am 99% confident that if schezny was in goal he would have definately have saved that, as for the second goal; it was a mistake from djourou that lead to that goal, but yes, squillaci is still teeeeeeerrible!!!!! And for those of you worrying about our defense, just take comfort in knowing that, that is our worst possible centreback pairing, we still have bartley, vermealen, koscielny and potentially jagielka. just think all of these guys would have to get injured before djourou and squillaci can get paired together in our first team defense, which is very very unlikely, but then again with arsenal’s luck you never know.
