How much do Arsenal want a trophy?
I know that it sounds like a stupid question, but what I mean is, what would we be prepared to sacrifice in order to get our hands on some silverware? If we had won the Carling cup, would that have kept the wolves (not the team) at bay for a while?
At the minute, nobody can compete with Man City, Chelsea and the PSG’s and Anzhi’s and Shanghai Shenhua’s when it comes to spending power. All I say is, give it a few years. These super rich folk see football clubs as their playthings, but they, like any other rich kid, soon get bored of their toys.
Chelsea, or rather Roman Abramovich, are spending money like a man with no pockets this summer, but do you think this would have happened if all they achieved was an FA cup and 6th in the league? The European crown was the only thing that Abramovich had not been able to buy so far and he was losing interest, FAST.
Don’t forget that Arsenal were within a whisker of winning the European cup against Barcelona not long ago. We were unlucky and Chelsea were lucky, oh well shit happens, but we will always be there or thereabouts. To be honest, I hope Man City win the CL next year and then we will see how much longevity means to their billionaire owners.
My cousin is a Nottingham Forest fan and he is constantly going on about their double European cup winning exploits, but would you rather be a Gunner, always in with a chance of top honours, or trying to get out of the Championship?
The only other teams who can compete with Arsenal, in terms of history, are Liverpool and Manchester United, and look what has happened to them. Be glad that you’re a Gooner.

Good little snippet, this article. These are good things to keep in mind when considering the long term future of the club. I would certainly rather see Arsenal in the Premier League for years to come and have no trophies at all than win something due to mass spending and then see us go bankrupt and down to the Championship.

Chelsea weren’t doing to great in the league when they started showing form, they just showed great team spirit and a desire to do what was necessary to win. If arsene can inspire the team with this mentality then I don’t see why this can’t be our season in the champions league?

Its always trophies, trophies and trophies. I heard some idiot 6 months back saying they would rather win the Carling Cup rather than getting into the UCL. Yes, we want trophies, but Trophies that are worth something. Any club can beat a league 2 team and win the league. A trophy shows that you are the best of the best, that you have fought with every inch of your soul to reach it, I dont want a trophy that I can get my throwing money on it, weather its a 10 year drought, or a 20 year drought, If Arsenal win a trophy, it will be the right way.

I would rather have us actually be able to compete with the manchester clubs and battle it out for the title (win or loose) than finish 4th 20 points off the top and win the carling cup… But that’s just me

Carling Cup is only a start, it should be achieved (and played) with youngsters and players who don’t get much of playing “in the real” games.
TITLE THIS SEASON!

Arsenal under Wenger will always play what we call the Arsenal Way and this sometime cost us the trophy that most fan dream off.
Yes, we been consistent in the league but for cup competition, I think Arsene need to adjust to suit or counter which team we playing against.
This is Arsene weakness, he always demand to play the Arsenal way which sometime backfire.
For cup competition locally he always put a mixture of fringe players and youngster till the end even when we reach the final except maybe for the last couple of year ago.
Remember when we play the Carling Cup final against Chelsea. The put their strongest squad but Arsene still put our fringe players and that cost us the trophy.
For the fan which fully support the club, they will always demand the trophy to show off and not to be ridicules as what we Arsenal fan are facing now.
But we as a Gooners, we are still proud of our Club beacuse we have been consistent in the league and we still hoping for the trophy to come and maybe come with the Arsenal Way.

Obviously the long term stability and consistency of the club is far more important than the odd trophy here or there. But it would be interesting to see what would happen to Arsenal players if we won a few trophies over the next couple of years. On one hand it may give us a better chance of keeping our top players but on the other hand winning trophies may highlight how good our players are, even more so than now, and then having more and more clubs coming in for them or the players demanding even higher wages thus losing them as the club cannot afford insane wages. Obviously I want Arsenal to win trophies but I just know the likes of Barca and City will be sniffing around more than usual.

Only the young maybe unfortunate arsenal fans complain about a small 7 year trophy drought. Before then, we’ve been used to lifting trophies but every great team has a dry spell.
Take for example:
Man Utd – 24 year drought
Chelsea – 55 year drought
Liverpool – 21 year drought
Man $hitty – 51 year drought
Even Barcelona had a 7 year dry spell but they’re the world’s best team at the moment.
So dear young gooners, time would tell. Just exercise patience.

me im quite happy as long as we keep getting CL football silverware will come but i think fans forget how much of an achivment it is to get that year in and year out AW does not get the credit he deserves 16 years running come on how many teams in the BPL can say they have done that and not spend the earth to do it eather ARSEN keeps getting the best out them and think alittle more time and money it will all come im happy to sit and wait as long as we are top3-4th in EPL thats good enough for me all these fools calling for AW to go or be sacked need to sit down and think what is arsenal without AW and what other manager could have turned arsenal around last season bringing in the ox and arteta just at the right time as well as getting the best out of a team that was in tatters after 2 great losses that would damaged any team in the world well done AW IMO…

I have to admit, a few weeks ago when the whole Usmanov situation was going on, i thought…yea, maybe he is the right man to take this club even more forward and allow us to compete financially amongst the big boys…but after hearing what’s happened to Malaga. i STRONGLY retract any statement i made supporting usmanov… This type of tradegy can happen to any type of club who have “sugar Daddy’s” as owners. What happens when the Shiek at City loses interest, or somehow loses all his money? Who will be crying then. Sorry to run of topic and ramble on but i just had to air my thought to my fellow Gooners.
ARSENAL TILL I FU*KIN DIE!!!

There is a difference between doing things ‘the right way’ and doing what is necessary and out right obvious to achieve and reap results. I do not condone the way Chelsea and other similar clubs are throwing money at every player that can kick a ball, but there is no harm investing wisely into better players than what we currently have. The fans for a long time now have cried out asking Wenger and the board to invest a little more into the transfer window, especially after losing all our key players since 2005. It is a no brainer, and only recently has Wenger diverged from his ‘only cheap boys policy’ to a more experienced and structured approach of ‘what you pay for is what you get.’ Arteta is a prime example of this and look how essential he was to us last season. I believe Wenger’s eyes have opened seeing our last three (hopefully four) transfers are all experienced, mature and extremely talented players all well into their 20′s. Not to say we do not have some fine youth players coming through the ranks in Coquelin, Yennaris, Afobe, Eisfeld etc. A good balance between youth and maturity will take Arsenal to new heights.
Between all the excitement of these new signings, we can still see a classic Wenger approach to the deals. Podolski was taken off the hands of a relegated team, therefore bought at a reduced price. Classic Wenger. Similar story with Cazorla – Malaga has serious debt so they sold Cazorla without much of bargaining muscle to flex. Wenger swooped in just at the right time. Sahin too will be a deal and a half if Wenger can acquire his services after the loan is up. Some people call Wenger stingy, but he is shrewd in this sense and when combining his eye for talent while balancing the books is a talent very few ‘good’ managers have. That is why I still think he is the best man for the job.
