International week breeds inane headlines!
International weeks in the football calendar are the equivalent of a summer bank holiday edition of the newspapers, and are classified as “silly season” stories. With very little for the football sites to talk about the writers and editors are searching around desperately for “news” to fill up their time and page-space.
My absolute favourite state-the-bleedin-obvious headline of the week just has to be: Arsenal new boys make Arsenal squad!.
As if Wenger would have spent a whole year working on getting Marouane Chamakh to move to the Emirates and then leave him out of the Premier League squad!
Or the four months Wenger spent on intense searching and negotiations to get Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci (not to mention the millions of pounds involved) to strengthen the Arsenal back line.
Can anyone imagine the Arsenal squad list landing on a news desk, and the Sports Editor glancing at it and saying “Oh My God! Wenger has added his three new players to his squad! That must be worth writing a story about!” That just emphasises how desperate they are for a story…..
