If, as some reports suggest, Thomas Vermaelen leaves Arsenal during the transfer window this summer, the Belgian defender will be the third captain of the Gunners to leave the club in as many seasons. The first in that trio was the Spanish international Cesc Fabregas, who returned to his boyhood club after Barcelona had tried to get him back for a while.
According to the Star, sources at the Catalan club have indicated that Fabregas could be sold this summer,as Barca are planning to rebuild the squad fairly extensively. Despite the fact that Fabregas has struggled to force his way into the first team on a regular basis, he is still regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world and would fetch good money. Fabregas could also be worried about his place in the Spanish national team if he is not playing week in week out.
“If an important offer for Cesc arrives then we will study the situation,” is what the source is supposed to have told the paper.
It is believed that the deal between Arsenal and Barcelona for Fabregas was quite complicated. The Gunners may be entitled to a sizable chunk of any transfer fee Barca got for the 25-year old. There are also reports that we are still owed money on the deal. Barca have quite a large debt and are not able to spend willy-nilly, but the disaster against Bayern Munich has convinced club officials that action is needed at the Nou Camp this summer.
With Fabregas known to keep Arsenal close to his heart and his reported attempt to buy a flat in London for his girlfriend and the mother of his child, it is no surprise that people are putting two and two together and coming up with the notion that he may be heading back to the Emirates. Is it all Paella in the sky, though, what do you think Gooners?
