Is it time to give Arsene Wenger a break?

Posted on August 22, 2010 by admin

Arsenal have now played two games of the new season, and have gained a respectable four points and scored seven goals, but, as regular visitors to Just Arsenal News will be aware, there seem to be more and more Arsenal supporters criticizing Wenger’s ability to run Arsenal.

Everyone knows (including Wenger) that the Gunners are in desperate need of a centre-back, and could do with a world class goalkeeper. He hasn’t been able to buy either as yet, for whatever reason, but he is obviouly trying as hard as he can without advertising the fact too loudly. We still have nine days left so we shouldn’t give up hope just yet, and perhaps we should just leave Wenger alone to get on with his job?

This time last season, Arsenal were being written off as no-hopers for the League and were being quoted at a massive 12/1 after selling Adebayor and Toure to Man City, but as usual Wenger got the team back together and were in the title race right up until the last month. Why should this season be any different?

In yesterday’s game, Arsenal proved that they were back to their best. Van Persie and Fabregas both got another half hour’s play under their belts. Theo Walcott is like a new signing after missing most of last season, and Marouane Chamakh scored on his official Emirates debut. With Van Persie back from his injury and a maturing Carlos Vela, the attack is much stronger than last season.

Even in the much-debated defensive positions, Wenger has Koscielny and the returning Djourou to replace Campbell and Gallas, and when A.N.Other arrives (Squillaci?), he will replace Silvestre and Senderos who never played anyway last season!

Okay so Wenger seems reluctant to actually spend any money, but the squad will definitely be stronger this season than last, and we were only “two steps” away from the title….

So isn’t it time everyone gave Wenger a break and realised that he is doing his level best as usual?

Song marshaled the defense very well with TV5, is that the reason The Prof feels reluctant to bring in another defender just to “warm” the bench? Walcott is slowly turning into the real Number 14 that he craves to be, well done Walcott! He also looked very comfortable yesterday moving into the middle as evidenced from the 2nd goal when he collected Wilshere’s pass. I agree with @admin, lets give The Prof a break for now.

yes its time to give wenger a break. last night was an absolute joy, to see the gunners turn it on……walcott and rosick were out of the world. both had a massive influence on the performance. just one thing that is bothering me is the fact that wenger played song in the heart of the defense.song should have been played in the mid. that’s his best position and not CB. I hope he is not needed to cover the position anymore. arsenal needs a new CB and a world class goalkeeper.

    COME ON ARSENAL

I love watching Rosiscky and finally this could be the year that he helps us win some silverware. Team looks good but I hope Wenger can get the players that he is looking to buy. If that happens, we could look forward to great season, otherwise, I don’t think we will be able to compete with Chelsea’s and Man u’s staying power. They both have got more power in their teams than us.

Yesterday was vintage Arsenal . Can any one in the country really play closer to the level that we played ?. The answer is simply a BIG NO. With out taking any credit away from the team which played as a team , with all due respect, it was against Blackpool who failed to test our backline and GK. We never worried too much about the attack which is the best and most versatile it England.
As any gooner would know,if we could get a decent CB and Schwarzer/ any other GK it would tremendously add to the confidence levels and extremely useful in the close season. But having said that I agree that Le Boss should be left alone from constant pestering. He knows a million things within the club for which we don’t have any access. And whats more he had already revealed he is in the market for CB and GK, we all know how he deals with last minute transfers. So let us leave him alone and be patient its only nine more days for deadline.

There is no need to give any break to Wenger, unless we get a silverware we will not dare to give any break. Arsenal is a very big club, possibly we rank 5th in the world. So we need to address the dry spell on our table this season. We need another central defender and Melo Filipe from Juve

The true is to given hin break, but what we can do with others they do not understanding nothing, just up and down, I do agree with Arsene after we fail to get titke last year, ” you can not win a title if consider 40 goals” that mean the problem was not just Almunia, but the cb. He will add another one or two cb that all, Almunia he will look best because he will protect. Just let Arsene do his job, I do believe he care for Arsenal more then any body in the earth

I agree to an extent. However song cannot keep playing centreback because it totally weakens our midfield and puts more pressure on the defence. If we came up against chelsea or man united with song in defence they would be severely overworked because there is no longer any real protection in midfield, yet i must admit that Wilshere is a real fighter.

Write an article, fans and shareholders respond and u sit and laugh @ responses. What does he need a break for? If not for Koscielny’s suspension,I bet that AW will not even think of signing a player. Good that its coming at d begining of the season. He has made these mistakes in the past. He is full of excuses.if song covers up for Koscielny, who covers up for song? There are big games coming with teams who might not play wit 10 players. He will only get a break when he does d ryt thing.

This article is flawed – no offence admin.

“In yesterday’s game, Arsenal proved that they were back to their best.”

They were great. However, it is delusional to conclude that they were back to their best based on their win over Blackpool – a team that is new to the premier league. And to compound to their misery, to play against Arsenal with 10 men. Let us be realistic and beat the top teams as well first.

@ Kachingwe Malawian gunner & andrew

    Well said!

    @ sandile samuel

Partially agree as we don’t know for sure if Arsenal would have won. However, it did prove something to all the fans. That he would rather sacrifice the CHANCE to win the title by NOT spending any money so that he can get a striker for FREE in the summer. Basically, to run the club for profits. Before anyone starts criticizing, it was AW himself who said we were looking for a striker during that period due to injuries.

Here is a question then.Let us assume that if we bought a top class striker we would have won the league. How much then are you willing to spent to buy that 1 trophy?20 million ,a Teves then, 80 million a Ronaldo?you tell me what price(someone else’s money of course)do you put on a tin cup?

Rate this comment: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  25. Gunnersfan! says:

    @ George

“A tin cup” – is that what it is to you? I hate to think of the Arsenal fans & players reaction if they heard this. Do you know the symbolism behind a trophy? Let me give you a couple of examples:

1)To the players and manager, it is an accomplishment for all the sweat, blood and tears that they have put in throughout the season.

    2) To the fans, it is a symbol of success that their team has done well amidst the tough competition and something which they can all be proud of.

As for your question, why don’t you ask AW that? He was the one who said that we were looking for a striker during that period. And once again, nobody is asking for a 80 million signing. We are asking for signings within the constraints of the transfer budget – and we do have a good amount set aside for transfers which has not been used.

still you go on about a WORLD CLASS KEEPER!!!
yet where is wenger to buy one? thier ain’t many world class keepers around, yet every one will be moaning very soon if and when scwarzer comes here, because he certainly not world class.
get a grip wenger said he’s after players, if they can’t agree a deal with the selling club then tough, fulham and sevilla are both asking far too much for average players, they not worldclass, not even great players they just average.
arsenal can’t afford world class players, like chech, messi ronaldo.we can’t really afford great players like ozil, but we can buy average players and make them at worse good, like adeybour,or great like vieria and henry.(nethier henry or vieria were world class be4 you all comment, great yes but not world class.)
so yes get off wengers back,he done a fantasic job over the years, built a two very good teams that won titles, built a great stadium, built a great training facilities, made our reserve and youth policy even better then before, producing very good youngsters, with lots off promise.
i’d rather this then the lets over spend, and risk putting the club in so much debt that the club could fold any minute just like leeds utd,and portsmouth, who both came very close to folding ,like liverpool are finding out now,and man utd trying to survive, the perils off thier greedy owners.
thanks to arsenal board room and wenger we no fear off that happening and success will come ,maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next year but it will come. clubs are starting to look over thier shoulders and worrying about the debt collecters,we ain’t ,be grateful, and support arsenal stop moaning because we ain’t sign no one,nor have many other teams in pl.or europe.

Good article, well balanced. The problem with our fans is that they think that they know how to run football more than Wenger yet when I read their comments I get the feeling that they do not know anything about football or Wenger’s philosophy that is for the long term sustainability of the club and not short term success. Buying a player for a club like ours is not as easy as going to the supermarket to pick a detergent or bread ! Wenger buys only players who can fit his philosophy. Give the guy a break !

Are you serious? We’re 2 games into the season and every problem we had doesn’t magically go away because we thumped a 10 man Championship team, and don’t tell me “They beat Wigan 4-0″ because Chelsea thumped Wigan 6-0.

Chamakh is still a terrible lone striker…he IS the best header of the ball in the world in my opinion, but that’s a specialty and in order to be a great striker you need to have a larger skill set. Watch the game again…how many errant passes did Chamakh make? Bad touches? Terrible shots? Too many to keep track of.

Wenger finally figured out that Rosicky and Fabregas play the same position…BRILLIANT. Nasri can’t play that position and it only took him getting injured for everyone to see it. Nasri holds the ball, he is not a killer passer.

Song did get better as the game went on, but had a terrible start at CB and I’m not entirely sure that Song’s improvement wasn’t directly correlated to the fact that Blackpool was down an attacker. Fact is, 2 games into the season and we’ve already had to tap up our emergency CB.

No one’s asking Wenger to go out there and drop 30 million pounds on a keeper or defender, but when Wenger himself acknowledges the need and won’t make the move because 3 million, instead of 2 million, for Schwarzer is too much…if 1 million pounds is the difference between 3rd and possibly winning a title then what’s the hold up?

maybe a loan signing could have been made, granted. that is if anyone was willing to loan a striker. no big epl team would.

it is easy to make judgements when you don’t have the facts straight. do you know if any strikers were made offers for? no, I don’t think so.

  38. GoonerVance says:

Arsenal are the 5th largest club in the world (in revenue) and the 4 teams ahead of Arsenal either have won many trophies the last 5 years (Man U, Bayern, Barca) or are trying like hell to win trophies (Real Madrid’s spending spree).

I’m not saying Arsenal should splurge like Real Madrid, but there is plenty of gray area between the Real Madrid budget (spending hundreds of millions of Euros) and Arsenal budget (tens of millions of Euros). Arsenal should definitely spend more, and if Arsenal doesn’t it falls on Wenger. He has power with the board, he has the leverage to leave the club and leave Arsenal in ruins, and he has the football intelligence to find great players. What he also has is a cheap streak. He is CHEAP. CHEAP. CHEAP. He is insulted when Barca makes small bids for Fabregas, but he wants Fulham to give up Schwarzer for nothing and we are in no position to barter.

I also think that going out and perhaps spending a little extra on players that are needed is good for Arsenal in the long term. Teams mistrust Arsenal and Arsene because too many times he has found great players for cheap. That doesn’t work anymore. Other managers know that if Arsenal offer 10 million for a player, that player is possibly worth twice that fee.

  46. GoonerVance says:

Actually, if you want to get real deep I think Wenger uses cheapness as a cover for his loyalty to players he believes in. Lots of times this loyalty pays off with the emergence and coming-of-age of young talent, but when Arsenal are so close to the precipice and all that is need is improvement in certain areas, Wenger can’t bring himself to sitting one of HIS players for a newcomer. Wenger would rather play with HIS players and be able to say that the team played “good football” and “competed for the title with little spending” instead of winning trophies.

How long have credible football analysts and fans criticized the quality of Bendtner, Almunia, Fabianski, Silvestre, Denilson, and Vela? How long have credible football analysts and fans said the team is an injury away from being stretched? How long is too long? To me Arsenal has a one year window to win a trophy and win Fabregas in the process. If we go trophyless this season Fabregas is gone (he’s probably gone anyway) and his career at Arsenal was merely a development stop for Barcelona.

I am not an enemy of Wenger. I have enormous amounts of respect for him as a human being and I think he is the best combination of manager and scout in the world. Arsenal being the butt of all jokes is getting frustrating. Knowing that Arsene runs the club the right way and no one will credit Arsene for it unless we win a trophy is frustrating. I just want him and the team to win a trophy so bad, and to see him cutting off his nose to spite his face is just getting FRUSTRATING. To me Chamakh is a cop out. A free transfer that can be rationalized as “good business” instead of a “necessary improvement” at striker. If we went out and bought Edin Dzeko it would be an admission that “our way” isn’t good enough to win trophies, so we get Chamakh on a free and it’s “the Arsenal way”.

No one will remember how the club was run and everyone will forget what Arsene has built if he fails to win trophies as his careers comes to an end, I don’t want that for him or Arsenal.

great post admin. i reckon it’s time to give Wenger a break. Firstly, with the team he’s had over the past few season, he has done a class job (don’t forget that until this summer he couldn’t sign too many top class players as we were in debt for the emirates st.) Also, if we had been in a weaker financial position this summer, the Arsenal board could have been convinced to sell Fabregas this summer. omfg, we would have been SCREWED!!!
Also, let me sum up the team for this season…

Hopefully a new keeper in goal.

Sagna, Kos, Vermaelen, Clichy (in defense)

    Walcott, Fabregas, Nasri, Arshavin (midfield)

    V. Persie, Chamakh (attack)

Then…hopefully another CB to step in, Eboue if Walcott gets tired/injured, Rosicky for Arshavin occasionally, Song to beef up the midfield against really attacking teams, and wilshere who can also come in.

All in all, I think that AW is spot on, with a better keeper and another decent CB in reserve, we have a real chance at this seasons title :D

Well, everyone cares about winning, we’re talking about winning trophies though. I don’t care about trophies, to me winning a trophy is as much about luck as it is about having a good team. Having great players gives you a better chance of overcoming bad luck-injuries/refereeing/players in bad form-so I want Arsenal to have more talented players to conquer that threat.

I don’t like that Arsenal and Wenger won’t get any credit unless they win trophies. I know that Arsenal and Arsene have accomplished much with little, they don’t have to convince me or any true Arsenal fan of that, but the fact is, these other assholes who talk on the tele and support other teams won’t shut up unless we win trophies.

History is written by the winners and for the last 5 years Arsenal have not been able to pen their story of triumph through youth development, playing attractive football, and performing within your financial means. I believe Wenger’s loyalty is preventing him from spending and being cheap is a way to justify not spending. Arsenal has money to spend and can spend while still living within their means, but Arsene doesn’t want to betray HIS players by acknowledging he was wrong to believe in some of them. Look how long it took for Arsene to let go of Senderos, everyone knew his career at Arsenal was over years ago, but Arsene still kept holding on. I still don’t believe Wenger has it in him to sell Traore even though all the rumors have been pointing to Traore being good as gone. Everyone else that has left the club recently was either disgruntled or at the end of their career.

Wenger never acknowledges that some of his players just don’t give Arsenal a better chance of winning against top opposition. I don’t expect him to come out and say that a player isn’t good, but by letting players go or bringing in new players to compete you essentially deliver that message as a manager.

Baz, Gunnerfan, hope you both good. Did you enjoy the game? I feel we played very well, Theo and Rosicky exceptional. Still everyone, do not become disalusioned by the result. This was a 10 man Blackpool team. Even Holloway said they were lucky not to have lost by a greater margine. Again i will say it we just aren’t clinical enough alot of wasted chances. Still a good result none the less.

Tranfer rumours. wooo Baz i aint seen him holding an Arsenal shirt but old Squillaci is very almost on his way. A story posted on goonernews.com reports of a number of other papers publishing this news. Rumours of Stelekenberg, im not holding my breath however at least Arsene has enquired.

It’s natural every supporter wants to be an analyst, but as any longtime Gunners fan knows that patience is a virtue with our club. This club has a great history and presence in English and European for how they play, and deliberate pattern of molding great players into superstars not buying them. Wenger has never been a cash-splash, quick fix type of manager and he knows that real success comes with a long-term plan of consistency and progression. It looks like Squillaci will be in the squad by next week and our midfield has looked competent without Song in the last few games. One more DMF or CB should set us straight barring anymore injuries. All that’s left is to seal the Shwarzer deal and get rid of Almunia once and for all. I know that part of the point for this site is for fans to leave their replies, it just seems like many do not know the Arsenal culture and way of doing things. If I wasn’t used to it by now I’d be frustrated myself, to me that is what makes Arsenal unique. Anyways, don’t let the bandwagon get too far ahead you.

  63. GoonerVance says:

I want to reiterate how much I love Wenger as a manager, but let’s be honest, if Henry doesn’t turn into a football God there’s a good chance Wenger has much less silverware. That’s what I mean by luck, not only luck as in lucky bounces, but luck as in sometimes you get good player and that player ends up being a legend.

We are lucky to have Fabregas the same way we were lucky to have Henry, and Wenger installed a style and players who could compliment Henry and increase our chances to win trophies. I just feel like we only have Fabregas for another year, especially if it’s another trophyless season and Arsenal hasn’t been aggressive enough in making sure that Cesc has players around him who could win. This is probably due to the debt, but either way it’s time wasted and if Fabregas leaves we’ll have no way of getting that time and opportunity back.

When the debt is paid off and Arsenal can spend some more, who is to say we will find another player as great as Henry or Fabregas, it’s important to make the most of the time you have with these great players. Barcelona play beautiful football, but they’re not the best team in the world without Messi.

Am good here too, thanks! I thoroughly enjoyed the game and was glad chamakh managed to get on the scoresheet albeit he had to do it the more difficult hard way hehe. It will be good for his confidence.

So wow it does look like Sebastien Squilacci is gonna join! To be honest, I never heard of him before like Kos but he should do well and give us some strenghth at the back. Besides that, another benefit from his signing is that the added depth will give the other defenders a chance for a breather as well. I can’t imagine Vermaelen playing soooo many games like he did last season. There is definitley a risk that of the players burning out from too many games.

  69. David S. says:

At the end of the day, none of our opinions matter. It’s the Arsenal board that decides Wenger’s fate and they’ve decided to give him a three year contract. Which leads me to my next point. I think it’s time for the people who dislike Wenger so much to put up or shut up. Manchester United fans who don’t like the Glazers have found a way to show their discontent. So have Liverpool fans, and Newcastle fans. Until I see a bunch of anti-Wenger placards at the next home game at the Emirates, I am going to from here on out assume that most anti-Wenger Arsenal fans are the sort of people who just hide behing a computer and whine but won’t do anything about it.

And by the way. About Squillaci. To everyone who doubted Wenger because they felt the transfer wasn’t happening fast enough I can now say a big fat I told you so. I never thought I would hear someone suggest Wenger should be fired because a transfer wasn’t happening fast enough. Get over yourselves.

    @Goonervance
Nice post in support of Wenger

But don’t get me wrong. I agree that winning trophies is about luck. But I believe in a different kind of luck. The kind of luck we had when we beat Fulham 1-0 last year. The kind of luck that sees a team win even when they play badly. Like Manchester United does so often.

I don’t think Henry turning into a football god was luck. I think Wenger knew. Because TH14 isn’t the only player whose potential Wenger recognized. Patrick Viera, Ashley Cole, Kolo Toure, Freddie Ldjunberg, Robert Pires, Fabregas, Nicolas Anelka, these are all players who were relative unknowns before Wenger brought them to Arsenal. It’s not just Fabreagas and Henry that Wenger has been “lucky” with. Unless you have a very short memory, or just haven’t been an Arsenal fan very long, you can’t argue that Wenger has been a genius when it comes to buying players with potential for cheap and turning them into stars. Thierry Henry wasn’t even a striker when first came to Arsenal. Juventus had him playing at left back. It was Wenger who was convinced that Henry’s ideal position was not as winger but as a center forward. And then Wenger kept faith in him as he went 8 games without scoring once. We all know how that turned out. So when I hear Wenger get blasted for keeping faith in our youngsters I really wonder if the people who are complaining truly know the history of Arsenal. And if your measure of success is trophies, then with the possible exception of Herbert Chapman I don’t think Arsenal has had a more successful coach than Wenger ever.

In the last 13 years Arsenal has qualified for the Champion’s league every year. The only other English club that has done that has been United. Not Chelsea, not Liverpool, not Tottenham, and certainly not Manchester City. So tell me, with the possible exception of Ferguson himself, which coach in England has a better track record than Wenger?

Mourinho? Benitez? Mancini? Give me a break.

Please Please don’t get so excited!!! we beat Blackpool who just join EPL with 10 men. Remember we beat EVERTON same time last 6-1 !!!!and still did not win anything. As of now August 26, the team has a lot of holes in it defence, and a GK is traffic police which allows every one to pass him. Why don’t you guys wake and smell the fresh coffee!!! this team is set up for owners and share holders not you!!!! fans don’t mean nothing to AW. The one who pays his checque is matters most to him. 5 more days later and he would say “I have lots of confidence in the team I have, and Fabiansky is the best GK in the world”. He is toying with you this year like the past 5 years. Did you guys see the way Chelsea playing? do you think they allow our team to win any silverware!!! dream on baby. 73. GoonerVance says:

Arsenal’s early success with Wenger was because of the football revolution he started in England. Then the other teams evolved and adjusted. If not for Henry there would be no Invincibles, and yes, while Wenger knew about Henry and brought him to Arsenal, Wenger did not know what Henry would become…no one did, no one can. With new signings we all hope for the next great player, but more times than not it doesn’t happen. Wenger also thought Jose Antonio Reyes was worth 10.5 million, a lot of money at the time.

I don’t attribute all of Wenger’s success to luck, I said as much, but if Arsenal are still playing his brand of football today, and he sees this current squad as being talented enough to win the title, as he has thought the last 5 years, then why is Arsenal trophyless?

Just saying, when the Invincibles happened, Arsenal let go of Seaman and brought in Lehman. Now we’re in need of another bold move at GK. Can Wenger let go of his loyalty and do what’s necessary.

The admin posted an article, which is in fact asking for people’s opinions. Nonetheless, there will always be a conflict of opinions on this forum. If you really can’t take constructive argumentation, then perhaps this is not the website for you? According to the admin, there is freedom of speech here as long as it is constructive and respectful so I don’t think you should be asking people to shut up just because their opinion doesn’t coincide with yours. Think about it.

Absolutely agree with this post. Wenger is one of the best managers in the world; the list of people that could replace him is very small.

A lot of people posting comments seem to think that we should be buying big-name players all the time. Now what other club tried that last season and finished 5th?
