Is Wenger playing games, or do Arsenal need to sell before buying?
No Sell No Buy (By S.H)
With 11 days left in the Winter transfer season, Arsenal still haven’t signed anyone. Arsene Wenger, as we know, is verbally parsimonious and enigmatic about recruitment. You’d never beat him in a board game of “Guess Who.” There are a plethora of Arsenal transfer rumours, linking a myriad of players to the Gunners, yet Wenger continues to refute having any interest.
Is it vintage Wenger strategy to utilise the media as pawns to avoid inflation vulnerability and pricing wars? Or is it really true he won’t sign and will hold off for another 6 months? Either way, the closing countdown of this transfer window and the urgency generated by supporters and by football analysts alike, continue to press Wenger in buying quick! Anti-Wenger fans’ barometer would have certainly forecasted a cold winter for Arsenal even from yester-summer, but does this lifeless climate in transfers mean that the start of next season will heat up? We’ve heard news of Podolski, Suarez and Cissokho as strong candidates in joining in the summer of 2012, but does that mean by the 11th hour in 11 days, fans will be bitterly disappointed?
It’s still very early to point a culpable finger to anyone for the lack of signing players, especially Wenger. After all, if the players we’re linked to aren’t permitted to leave by their clubs or the actual player wants to remain with his team for the rest of season, how can we blame our manager, scouts, negotiators or even the board? Remember we need 3 signatures from 3 different parties to close any deal.
Many other English teams, even the top 6 have been relatively quiet. We’ve heard news of Gary Cahill move to Chelsea and Newcastle capturing Cisse, but they are the only 2 major transfers so far. Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, and Tottenham haven’t committed to a significant signing yet, and it appears a common trend between these teams to release players to either free up funds or make room in the squad. Arsenal seem to be following suit, with Arshavin and Chamakh the most popular by media headlines.
We all understand that the squad needs to part with some unwanted players and reinforce itself with world class talent, or even players that are better than what we currently hold; needless to mention whom, as we know that the preferred sack list comprises of about 5-7 players. Hence, I believe that if we can’t sell our players before the window closes, this means we won’t get anyone new.
For fans bickering at Wenger, please try to understand that we cannot buy players if the room in the squad doesn’t allow it. Yes we have money, but that means nothing when you have to comply with FA team regulations and surplus wages. Without selling, we’ll just be creating new wages without terminating contracts that are inactive on the playing field. Would you run a business where you are paying someone ridiculous wages to do nothing? If your budget states you can only afford 10 employees for 500K per annum, and knowing maybe 3 are not performing well, how can you take on more staff when you’re not maximising the usage of those under-performing and have to stick to strategic budgets? The simple logic would be to release those 3 that contribute the least, and make room for potential workers that will be more productive. The only difference we have to consider which makes Football transfers a nightmare for managers, is the fact that we can’t just terminate someone unless we find them a new nest or allow a Bosman to take its natural course (which is non-profitable and never a contingency plan).
The selling activities in the following week and a half will definitely dictate how much activity we’ll experience with recruitment. I would be very disappointed if we don’t pick up anyone new, but that will mean that there is a higher chance Arsenal will be very busy again this summer transfer. Yes I agree with all who are thinking “we need players now” as Champions League qualification is vital to Arsenal having the pulling power in the transfer market to attract big names, or in RVP’s case, keeping our big names.
On the contrary, we have to understand the reality of desperately needing to offload some futile players, which is something I believe Wenger is trying very hard to achieve. I remember in the last transfer window we had to part with Clichy, Fabregas, Nasri, and the bad apples in Denilson & Bendtner were sent on loan to saliently reduce wage costs. This ALL happened before we actually bought players.
Some might debate that we only recruited players due to a hammering at Old Trafford, a game I’d rather not remind Arsenal fans of. It could be true with the non-medical-check-signing of Arteta proving very suspicious as Wenger is usually known for his meticulous and thorough ways. Regardless of what is true or not, Arteta is a good signing and has done well for the club. He is no Fabregas, nor is Ramsey, but the only midfielder in the world to replace Fabregas competently would be Xavi. I hope this understanding would assuage the feelings of some angered fans, as we seem to be over losing Fabregas, but not completely over anyone good enough to replace him.
It might be accurate to state that if we can at least sell 1-2 players, the chances of landing someone could increase, but then again, as mentioned earlier by Wenger, he will only sign players if he feels that:
(a) they are available on the market
(b) they will improve the squad.
Some will agree that Arsenal can easily afford players like Gotze, Eriksen, Podolski, Cissokho, Ba et al and many are pushing Wenger to buy, but have we considered that Arshavin and Chamakh were also coveted by the same fans that now want them gone? Arshavin was a big name signing (Arsenal’s most expensive) due to success with Zenit, but Chamakh was brought in because many believed Arsenal lacked physicality at the time. Both made dramatic introductions to the league, but eventually faded. Now supporters are calling for their heads! Wenger has probably processed this in his head, and it doesn’t surprise me why he may make excuses for Arshavin’s poor performances. After all, if you were a manager of a major football team and made a record signing that didn’t live up to expectations, wouldn’t that make you think a poor decision was made? What if we were to acquire the likes of our winter targets, and they end up being flops, as some would describe the Russian and the Moroccan international? Wouldn’t that be a transfer travesty? Then the same cycle from fans wanting them to leave, starts again.
Wenger is probably extra cautious recruiting a big name player this time around, not only after Arshavin’s failed impact, but due to the fact that the market is just demanding preposterous sums of money for players that would be worth half that 3-5 years ago. However, the pressure is on for at least a top 4 finish and if this winter transfer closes without defenestration activity, then it appears we’ll ride it rough for the next 4 months. If we can take any positives from not releasing or signing players now, it would be that there will definitely be some major changes in the summer.

Well it’s ovious we need to buy because there are doubts this squad is good enough to finish 4th we need to offload arshavin chamack maybe more whats the point having them when they arnt good enough to be in the team we need players that can make a difference and are reliable and what about diaby and Gibbs there on the payroll but always injured do we need players like that get rid of three and buy 3 a leftback playmaker and striker then we wud have a solid squad good enough to win titles I’m sure there’s good enough talent for sale this month

wenger has already said, he wont buy unless we lose on sunday !. if he is worried about bringing new players in because of the expense, then he has to sell chamahk, arsavin, squllachi, rosicky. then he can spend the money from thier sells, to bring better quality players in from the prem league, for get div 1, and french 1st division. he can then keep the money he already has, for buying new players, and make the board even more richer, its the fans money remember that wenger, !

This article is flawed, Man utd and Man city have not bought, because they are 1st and 2nd, with strong squads, and because they invested in the right players during the summer transfer window.
As far as I’m concerned I don’t think Wenger believed Nasri would leave. He had no back up plan and was thrown into a difficult position, with the transfer window closing. Arteta was the best player available at short notice.
Arshavin was a wonderful signing, although perhaps a big name signing. He wasn’t known before the Euro’s. He was relatively old at 26, for a “Wenger” buy. He played in the russian league and not in Europe.
I believe that his form has dropped as a result of players such as Nasri, Fabregas and Clichy leaving, with no real quality being replaced. Is that an Excuse? No. But to any player at Arsenal it must have made him think. Why haven’t we signed someone such as: Benzema, Ozil, Gourguoff etc. etc.
Chamakh was signed to replace Bendtner, Bendtner was a direct replacement for Adebayour, but has the wrong attitude.
Denilson was a direct replacement for Gilberto, but never amounted to much.
Wilshere is the replacement for Fabregas
Gibbs for Clichy.
Those players, you could argue are like for like, apart from form in Chamakh’s case. Nasri was replaced by Arteta, a much slower player. With no incentive to take on a player which Nasri loved. A player like Nasri is our missing link. A second striker is a missing link, and the deterioration of Arshavin is a poor link.
Those 3 areas of the squad are what need addressing…..Bad luck has decimated our defence, but when healthy I would say our defence is solid:
Szcesney
Sagna Vermaelen Koscielny Gibbs
That is a great defence:
backups or rotation: Fabianski, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Miquel, Santos there could be an arguement that Jenkinson may not be good enough, or Santos though thats down to opinion.
In Dm we have:
Song
Frimpong
Coquelin
All 3 are great players and no need to address, M’Vila would be absolutely quality but a need? No
Mid and St is where there are holes…
RW: Walcott and oxe I am happy with them both to be rotated
LW: Gervinho, Arshavin (problem), Ryo (too young and rough to be relied upon, perhaps a loan to premiership team?)
CAM: Ramsay (not enough goals in him right now)
Wilshere
Arteta
Rosicky (I think his time is running out at Arsenal)
Benayoun (I’d be surprised if we sign him in the summer)
ST: van Persie, Chamakh (no confidence in himself, perhaps the move up was too much for him?) Park (Not what you would call quality, but haven’t seen anything of him)
we need an AMC with pace and a mind to run around opposition defenders and to keep pace with our wingers
A striker or 2, one of quality to compliment and push van Persie and a young up and coming prospect to play in Carling cups, and FA cups

I have been a big follower of Wenger. but i now believe he is making some bad decosions. After the club losing top players in the summer., you would have imagined they wud made suitable replacements. Wenger hasnt bought in quality players and is stubborn in holding onto under acheivers, arshavin walcott rosicky.. Wenger has 11 days to sort this out, but it seems his stubborness will prevail.

i think that when you buy somebody in lets say arshavins position, potential buyers would only bid 3/4 million because they know you are willing to sell

It is all on wenger … if he does not sign, he has to produce! The pathetic minimum gooners now hail a success is getting fourth spot and this year it seems unlikely we will get it above our competitors, or at the very least, it is their position to throw away right now.
We sell and do not replace with the right quality and have been doing it for years. What did we expect? Now the likes of city and spurs have overtaken us, and liverpool and newcastle are fast catching us – because of proper investment.
If wenger does not invest properly then we will fall and even when we got champions league football, wenger admitted half the team wanted to leave in the summer. What will it be like if we lose another set of top players and fail to get champions league football

Sorry. I hate this part of the article. Why must we follow suit? Do they have the kind of problems we are going through. The majority of them are above us in the table, and we are following their style in the transfer window? (sic).
Ok. Let’s agree we are following suit. But did we follow suit to strengthen our squad in the summer when they were doing theirs? What a controversy!

We could sell (say) Arshavin 1st and this would make space in the budget / squad. But Wenger still wants to keep him. Very few others do ! If Walcott (or his agent) keeps asking too much we could sell him too. Where is the sale of Squillaci ? Or Bendtner ? Or Denilson ? Or Vela ? Answer …they won’t take a cut in wages and Arsenal have been over paying them !!! Other clubs might fancy them (or might not) but will certainly not pay those wages. What a bloody mess our playing staff is in.

@Travis Bickle, good post, but having a 9 or 10 players that are good and the rest crap will not cut it if we want silverware (which as we have seen is not a priority for the board and Wenger.) Injuries are always going to play a role, so that is why any team competing for titles needs at least 15 world class players, the rest can be average. Arsenal’s financial stability is something the board and Hill-Wood love to flaunt, so why can we not flex this muscle of ours and get these players in? Rather than have 3 sh*te players, sell them and get one world class player in his place and pay him what the other three salaries accumulated to. Our squad is too big, and 2/3 of them are not good enough.
Anyway, tired of commenting on the same BS over and over again. Not like what we say on here is going to make a difference. The board need to learn the hard way, if Arsenal are on the way down, which they are, then it will affect profit of the club. Their greed will be the end of them.

Seeing as he doesnt do alot on the week, why not play Arshavin in the middle, behind RVP. Theo can stay on the wing, put Benayoun or OX on the right. Surely its worth a try, we cant do any worse than we are. Arshavin looks deflated most of the time cause he doesnt like playing on the wing, why? Because he isnt keen on tracking back to defend.
So what happens, we have poor jenkinson or Coquelin getting slaughtered at left back. He had better not make this error against United, Valencia will strip our left back of his pride and dignity. Just gotta hope Theo can do the same to Evra.

No, I dont believe that it’s hard to sell some of the players like arshavin, chamakh, walcott, rosicky, djourou, squillaci, (if wenger decides to sell).
Every player has a price. Why, cesc was sold (amazingly cheap considering his worldclass stature), rebel-wantaway nasri was (forced) sold to cut potential losses. With horrible players like almunia and squillaci(sorry to say), you cant expect high fees, but still saleable to cut losses in the form of their salaries. If wenger likes to buy cheap, he must be realistic that he may need to sell cheap as well. Anyway, it’s not like the club is in financial problems…and the silly PHW even said so when commenting about Arsenal not qualifying for CL next season.
BUT the crux of the matter for Arsenal NOW is to do whatever it takes to both stop the slide in form and league table position, and also to improve and climb up the table. If this is priority, then it must be wenger’s aim to take advantage of this January/winter transfer window – instead of talking crap about doing away with it! – to buy and boost the squad, especially when the team is defensively weak (injuries etc…, and should we not have bought Samba earlier?), AND because can Persie need a topclass back-up striker – not a temporary Henry. Wenger playing games is fine (if true as you said), but AFTER 7 years, it’s time to speak and deal truthfully, and also act quickly instead of waiting for the last few hours before the window close.

We always here we want to get players that add quality. With some of the players we have that should not be a difficult proposition. Do you mean to tell us that we can’t buy anyone better then Djourou, Squillaci, Ramsey, etc. lets face it right now are quality is mediocre at best. We aren’t even using the young players that we have been hearing about for the past few years. We only bought players last summer after we were forced to by a bad start to the season. Surely, a couple of signings that amount to 25 million or so , but puts the team within competitiveness is not going to bankrupt the team is it ?
I think the decision makers are shooting themselves on the foot.

The biggest stooge is the board as a whole. Wenger remains their preferred manager not only because he finds players on the cheap, but becuase he is quiet about what goes on behind closed doors. The Frenchman is too smart for that. He wont get into politics as it saves his job and reputation amongst the big wigs. This is the sad reality because Wenger is a great coach but he just has his hands tied.
And whoever it was above me that posted a petition site to fire the board and bring back David Dein, its useless. No matter what we say as fans, the board dont care. a petition wouldn’t even pass the secretary’s desk. Nice try but keep the passion alive. godd article overall though

In the light of recent developments from Wenger, it makes you wonder if Wenger had no choice but to sell Nasri (most likely, he was told that the offer MC made was too good to refuse, by the capitalists that now rule our club). Lets face it, if there was a detective on “the case of the decline of Arsenal over the last 6 years”, surely they would find that we ARE a selling club – therefore, not a real football club anymore (who’s main purpose is to win trophies), but a money making business for people who know how to make money from football. I’m a gooner till I die, but I (along with a lot of disillusioned fans) have now been tipped over the edge with the crap that is going on with our club. It’s not right.

I hate when people said Arsenal is weak when they struggle to face Swan, Wolf, Fulham and Leed. Come on !! Sunday match we will win, they lose to blackburn, lose and draw to Newcastle, lose to unknown basle and also CRYSTAL PALACE !!!!

being realistic podolski hazzard M suarez and baines are all afordable and needed podolski can play just behind striker can create chances score goals and makes good runs hazard on left can produce goals and create chances and maybe a lb signing i would love to see baines but i dont see tht happening all possible we have money to bring them here ofload players on big wages like diaby squalachi and arsharvin and a few more like denilson bendthner we should be sick

The article was well written.balanced in view so I don’t know why some of these comments are so negative. I’ve hopped on this site a few times now and all I read are fans bagging the team. I’ve never bothered to leave a post as I just enjoy reading, but finally someone(admin maybe?) has produced an article which shows a perspective from both sides.

Wenger is just waiting for everyone to buy their players, so he has an excuse of saying no good players out there, or the current market price is crazy.

are we really arsenal fans? Our comments are full of negativity that can not be found in other club’s blog. Some of our players are underperforming but is it enough reason to call them dead- wood? Look at torres of 50 mil, are chelsea fans calling him dead-word? What of carol of 30 mil, has newcsatle fans crucified him? This is the right time to get behind the club and our players. We should raise up our vioces against refs trying to kill our club with questionable and wrong calls. Wake up gunners and stand behind your team.

ArsenaLova!! you dont have to wait next year, how about this year. We serve and encourage the fans of Manua, Man shitty to serve their players and board right, come on fans can demand more after 1 billions being spent !!! Europa League is the best you could get after 1 billion?????????? they even wait 3 years just to get in Europa, I’ll wait and see this season, if Man shitty could win anything. I think MU will take the premium and others team will take europa. Liverpool will take carling and left Man sitty with nothing except 1 billion bills. maybe they will spent another 1 billions to get on top and try to overtake Chelsea for the bills

Those fake arsenal lover, they now only talk about EPL, no one dare to mention CL or europa because they knew the 2 best team in EPL play in Europa and the third team no even in anything. That’s the fact!! but they overseen it and no critic on these under perform team who get very tiny easy opponent in Europa which Arsenal will play kids like carling cup all he way to win, Europa is joker and the 2 big team claim its important for them, go on and drop out next year after group stage, I wouldn’t mind.
Some fans said they will protest or react if Arsenal play Europa!! well I think we have reason to burn MU, Man sitty and Tot flag now because they all in Europa and eventually 1 didn’t even make it to playoff. You only see what crisis in Arsenal with alot of injuries but you didn’t see other team with no or little injuries but still drop out important leauge like MU, MSitty and Tot. We have reason in back 4 injuries crisis what reason they have to drop in Europa? not enough players? or no enough pay?

I understand that we need to sell before we buy, but we need to start buying like for like, the money obtained from nasri and cesc should have been used to buy only 2 quality players, only the share holders are happy with the current situation. It’s just not good enough.

Can buy and sell at the same time what,s the problem once
the transfer window is open,so the two most obvious playe
rs to be sold are Walcott and Arshavin but is anyone listening at the Emirates head office ?
