It looks like Cahill won’t be arriving – Arsenal rumours 16/01/11
It is suspiciously quiet around Arsenal regarding transfers at the moment, there have been the mutterings of Gary Cahill, Matthew Upson, Per Mertesacker, Samba and a few other names that nobody has ever heard of, however, the Daily Mail are reporting that we are not willing to stump up the cash for Gary Cahill:
According to the article, Arsene Wenger does not want to pay more than £8m for the England defender who has been followed by Arsene for a couple of years now – it doesn’t seem to me like Arsene would go in with a bid that ridiculously low for a player he rates highly. It just seems a bit dodgy on the part of the Mail and you do wonder if they are just trying to stir things up and use a few more column inches.
I can’t see Cahill arriving anyway, so no harm done!
The Star on Sunday seem to think that we have agreed a fee with Oxlaide-Chamberlain, £5m now and then another £5m in add-ons. Considering respected Arsenal youth websites are rubbishing the claims of the Mail (for claiming we were close to signing him) – I wouldn’t take much notice of this either.
The same rag are also running a story about how Patrick Vieira is going to return in a coaching capacity at the end of the season and I would absolutely love this to be true. There is just something inspirational about Paddy… maybe it is just the memories… He is an Arsenal legend and could only bring good things to the younger members of the squad especially.
Imagine training with Paddy V when you are a 15-16 year old, what an experience!
Hopefully the noises about signings are more positive in the next week as we start to get towards the tail end of what has been a very quiet January transfer window. Come on Arsene, you know you want another defender!

If Paddy really comes back then he will surely increase the physicality in Arsenal sgame..we wud no more be lightweights…

I would look at Sahko now, I know Wenger said he wants a defender who is used to the premiership but this kid would be ideal and a long term signing as he is very young still.
I’m sorry but Bolton can keep Cahill for that price because he is not even a regular international and is not performing that outstanding to merit a fee like that being attached to him. He is a good defender but his price is way over inflated even for an English player.

Or maybe we try to sign van der wiel (ajax) and slot him temporarily into centre back until verms is fit and then he can giv some proper competition to sagna cos we’re a bit thin ther right now tbh. he was pure class in south africa and even talked about us once!

He was never a realistic signing for January.
If we sign a defender in January he will be a cheap stop-gap player like silvestre !
Not the type of signing I like …. But that what I expect from Wenger & Arsenal.

I am inclined to believe Vertonghen would be great simply because he would be an back-up to Song(whose name doesn’t begin with Denilson)although Samba would certainly give us a bit more in attack and defence at set pieces.Yesterday WHU knew the corners would be either short to Nasri or just a ridiculous wasted kick into the penalty box. Imagine what it would be like if defenders were constantly in 2 minds from our set pieces too!

Cahill isnt worth 20 million!! Id pay 12 at most n give them vela for the rest of the season!! Only seen it on MOTD but Samba had a stinker against Chelsea yesterday. If we where to spend 20 million on a defender it has to be Neven Subotic!! He is amazing and is helping Dortmund walk the german league!! Sign Mexes now for 3-5 million before AC get him on the free. Sell Squallici in the summer and get Subotic then. 5 CB would be Vermaelen Mexes Subotic Djourou and Koscienly. Wouldnt be in this position again when we are struggling with injuries.
@ Nasri those 4 coaches are a great idea and @ gooneraboard I was thining Ray Parlour as hair stylist!!

Cannonhead be serious m8. We ripped West Ham to shreds yday. RVP was allowed time and space to score his 1st goal when he was inbetween upson and tomkins. Not to mention the World Cup, when England lost to Germany Upson was at fault for about 2 of the 4 goals. He used to be decent but lets face it hes past and would just make us worse. WENGER DON’T BUY HIM 4 GET IT!!!

even in the agtermath of a 3-0 victory against a very awful west ham side playing with no fight…its blindingly obvious we need quality at the back. I was listening to Stan Collymore on talksport yesterday during the game and he was praising arsenal but said they just need a top centre back, (he mentioned Lucio…but you get the drift), and a Defensive midfielder like de jong then they would win the prem for the next 3 years.(i agree with that)
He laughingly said its up to you mr Wenger do you want it or not!…
But most people think he wont because its not important to him is it.
One thing is certain we wont win the prem with that defense..NO way!!!
Barcelona running at kos and ebouie and maybe squillachi……are you having nightmares already????

Just listend to an interview with Thomas Vermaelen on the Belgian television. He’s flying to Sweden to get surgery on a muscle close to his achiles. It should solve the problem and he would be back around March????

my fellow gunners….. i dont know about u guys but what about micheal ciani of bordeaux? he isn’t european cup-tied and from what i’ve seen of him i think he’ll be a good player for arsenal and could be a bargain as also his club have been struggling…. What do you think gooners?
