Jenkinson wants to be a regular – How long before he achieves this?
The transfer of Carl Jenkinson from Charlton to Arsenal in the summer wasn’t expected to lead to a frequent run of games, with Bacary Sagna making the right-back spot his own. However, since the aforementioned Frenchman is out with an ankle injury sustained in early October, Jenkinson has been given the responsibility to fill in and the opportunity to show Wenger that the £1 million spent on him was worth it.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, the 19 year-old said, “It’s very nice for him to believe in me and put me in the team in the first place. Obviously over the years he’s put faith in youngsters but when it’s you, you’re that bit more grateful…. I know I have to improve if I want to be a regular at this football club. It’s nice that he thinks that [I am improving] but I know I have a lot more to do to get where I want to be.”
Of course, Jenkinson has areas in which to improve – such as his positioning – but he has recognised this and looks to be getting used to the pace of the Premier League with every game: “I think they saw that there were many things that I can improve technically but that they could improve when I came here. I think physically they were quite impressed with me but now I’m here I can improve other aspects of my game.”
Jenkinson’s arrival at the top level has been met with admiration, in particular for his impressive crossing technique and endless energy throughout games. Although it is difficult to compare him to Sagna in his first season, Jenkinson has already assisted two goals in his seven starts for Arsenal while Sagna has just twelve more, despite having started 169 games more. At this rate, Jenkinson will certainly be far more of a contributor to the attack than Sagna.
If Jenkinson can eliminate the occasional points in which he gets caught out of position, he really could be a strong contender for the right-back spot. At a time when fellow Gunners Emmanuel Frimpong and Lukasz Fabianski want time away from the Emirates on loan, Arsène Wenger must surely be looking at Jenkinson not as a player for seasons ahead but one that really could make an impact now.
If he continues to improve at his current rate, can he provide real competition for the right-back spot for next season?

i really like this player, from what winterburn has said in a recent interview on talksport about him i have high hopes to. he is an arsenal fan who is living all our dreams! and good luck to the young lad. winterburn said he has talked to jenkinson on most match days before and afyer the game and jenkinson is eager for feedback and is always trying to improve on his weak points, he is also the last to leave after training and the first one to arrive. i love his stamina and workrate, belive me he WILL get better and play for england. a million pounds well spent again by our brilliant manager. how much was glen johnsen again? or boswinga? tut, tut, foolish managers.

I don’t doubt the boy jenkinson’s skills but they can’t be compared to Sagna’s. BS3 is one of if not the best RB in world football. Arsenal’s game plan doesn’t favor scoring from crosses which is way Sagna doesn’t have more assists. He provides another touch in the passing game and does his defensive duties far better than most. Jenkinson has a long way before he’s on sagna’s level

if he really wants to be a regular he should prove it to the boss in training. He is definitely faster and better than sagna in crosses and works tirelessly but poor defensively and he is highly inexperienced. he still has a long way to go

well anyway we have two great right backs, sagna is still my first choice, his IMO the best RB in the world, but jenkinson has so much potential, and he can develop without much pressure, cos bac will be first choice in a couple of months… this is great experience for jenkinson, who can make a great career at arsenal…

jenkinson has a lot of potential. Hes deceptively pacey, athletic and committed. He is doing the right thing getting advice of winterburn and lee dixon would do the club a favour by mentoring him as well. Wenger usually has an eye for young talent, i will give him that credit.

We can play both of them, with Sagna at RB and Jenkinson further forward. With his impressive crossing and energy he just might be the next Beckham.

it’s time for him bcz he can be better then sagna if he is given chance but CB has to control him and santos going forwards to far.

Before this we had sagna and clichy both whom cannot cross so well. now we have santos and jenkinson. very good crossers. we can now add diff dimensions to our game. plus he’s faster than sagna.

@tommy – Frimpong was quoted as saying (to Arsenal Player), “If the opportunity comes for me to go on loan and they tell me that it will be good for my career to go on loan and get some games, yeah, I will do that, but if no club comes in then I will wait and see what happens.”
I guess he’s not necessarily screaming for a loan but he’s open to one.

He’s not ready to be playing at right-back week in week out, and making him do so could be bad for his development. Having said that he is a good player and has potential to be a regular Starter in the next few years.
He is an extremely hard worker and that can only boad well for the future.
He just needs to work on his defensive positioning and I’m sure he will get better with every game he plays.

Great talent still needs to adapt to the premier league And positioning but with determination which he has, a greats manager which he has and experiences talented defenders around him he will become very good .

Can’t cross, can hardly defend but does work his tits off. give him 5 years and with his work ethic and the legend that is Arsene wenger he’ll be outstanding.

His attitude is right, that’s a good start. We will see how good he is when we play tougher teams. I think he has it in him, completely different style to Sagna, maybe that could work to our advantage. Similar to Santos in how he covers ground on he counter, not as tricky but puts in a decent pass. His defensive skills are what’s important..so far I’ll admit I’m not completely convinced, but then again we havent see much of him. He has great potential though.
