L.J. – The Greedy Arsenal Board should have chosen Usmanov!

Posted on June 13, 2011 by admin

THE REAL PROBLEM AT ARSENAL A Guest Post By L.J

I have long thought that the board members of Arsenal are just plain GREEDY and just want to fill their pockets. When I read the news that Usmanov was going to get take controlling share in the club, I thought
soon the old members of the board will change and that PETER “I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE FANS” HILL-WOOD would be fired.

But then the board members suddenly has a change of heart and started supporting Kroenke in his bid to take over the club, when they were previously opposed to anyone taking over the club at all!

Now look at Usmanov’s and Kroenke’s standing in FORBES LIST OF BILLIONAIRES. Usmanov is 35th (with $17.7b) whereas Kroenke is 440th (with $2.6b). Now I don’t know what everyone else thinks but I think
if you want to sell your business, but also want it to have the best future, then you will only sell it to the person who has the ability to invest further in the business so that it grows.

Also keep in mind that our club itself is worth $1.18b. When you read these figures who do you think will invest more money Usmanov or Kroenke. Something sure does smell fishy, doesn’t it?

But our distinguished board members decided that making Kroenke the owner of our club is better for the future. But I ask WHOSE future? THE CLUB’s or THE BOARD’s? I think we all have only one answer to that question and it DOESN’T start with the letter ‘C’.

The board member’s claim that Kroenke is best for the club because he has experience owning sports teams and they are right. He does own FIVE other teams. Now I ask once again how much money will he invest in Arsenal when he has FIVE more teams to worry about?

The sad truth is that there is only one cure for this. I know I will make many people upset with me for telling this. Something similar to what happened to Liverpool F.C will have to happen to our club also. Arsenal will have to CRASH AND BURN first for anything good to happen. The Club will have to drop below the 10th position in the league standings first.

Because then the club will start to show a loss and it will make the other minority shareholders take notice and decide that they don’t want anything to do with a board who likes nothing more than to destroy a historical club. Then the club shares will plumment and since Kroenke can’t take a large loss I think he will sell and Usmanov will take over and the club will RISE FROM IT’S ASHES stronger and better…

Horsesh*t! Usmanov’s cynical plot to get into the hearts of some fanse has apparently worked sadly! He has no more desire to invest his millions into the club than any other owner would – easy for him to be critical now – did you hear him mention any investment plans when he was bidding to taje over control? No? Funny that!

actually, it s way better that a man with 2.6b take over the club than a guy with 17b as he will be carfull in his investment, Kroenke has a history in running clubs, some may have fail a bit but as for the club, it cannot be that bad

What a load of tripe mate, you are off your head. There’s only so much any owner will be able to invest into the team next year anyway so your argument is invalid.

There are other reasons like, he made the better offer to buy shares.

I don’t see anything wrong with Stan being the major share holder. His history backs up his promise to not laden the club with debt meaning all our income can be spent investing in the club rather than paying off interest which can only be a positive in the long term.

I read the cmments of fans with dismay. Who exactly is conning who? Both Kroenke and Usmanov have stated that thewant the self sustaining model of the club to work. Kroenke on the one hand thinks that this is a charter to sit back and take out profit from the club, while the other [Usmanov] thinks that the level of debt is too high and that a share issue should be used to pay off a lot of the debt and build for the future buying players that will do us credit. As an Arsenal fan, I know whose side I would rather be. What I dont understand is the abusive comments that have absolutely no logical contents.

    Aniruddh:
Please can you flesh out why you think that the Russian is a conman?
    MadAdaM:
He did not mention the investment plan nor did Kroenke. The difference is that he is saying it now and Kroenke as usual is keeping dead quiet almost fiddling while Rome burns.

The writer is right! Usmanov should have been the owner! We would have seen an egoistic battle between Usmanov and Abra! See what Abra has done for Chelski! Even better, see what the Sheikh has done for ManC. What have the Glazers done for ManU? What have Hicks and Gillett done for Liverpool! Your anti-Usmanov sentiments are purely racist! Shortly QPR will be challenging for the ‘top 4′ too! You know why? Ownership is not in he hands of the phony Yank billionaires! Believe me, you’ll see! Get it straight, Kroenke is small change compared to Usmanov! The only reason you anti Usmanov, is because he’s not British nor American. The Yanks have stuffed up everywhere they’ve been recenly, and Kroenke is gonna stuff up The Arsenal, something that has already started ! Usmanov’s previous non-coomitment was purely as a resultant of those British shareholders who made him feel unwanted! If I’m Usmanov, I’ll buy West Ham! It does not make sense that Gazidis wields more power than Usmanov! It’s laughable and that’s what Arsenal is becoming, with Kroenke at the helm!

I’d take Usmanov over Kroenke anyday. Usmanov wanted to clear the debt and offered the board instant funds to buy new players. Usmanov knows that our sponsorship deals for our stadium and shirts are up soon and to get the most money out of Nike and Emirates we need to be winning things (not struggling to reach 4th). He knows that spending 50 mil now will be covered when we agree the new deals. Stan Kroenke is only interested in one thing, Stan Kroenke. He’s bought Arsenal to make money for himself, not to improve the club, not to share the club with the fans but to make money like he has done at every club he owns. I think someone has been conned here but it is certainly not the author.

    Mr Admin,

This may not be posted publicly as it may bring you embarrassment, but you do little to inject any true confidence in our team. The situation is what it is so it is needless to speculate and rant on like a petulant child. I read so many preposterous transfer and financial reports and it’s obvious that many Arsenal fans are misinformed. If you are interested in knowing more, please google “The Swiss Report” detailing the major teams and their financial positions. This report also is a good summation of the positive drive to come from Kroenke and Arsenal’s true current weaknesses in commercial drive and T.V exposure rights/contracts. Hopefully this will inspire True Arsenal Supporters to remain poised and just take a chill pill! Believe in your team and Manager.

You live in a very simple world don’t you? I wondered how long it would take after Usminov’s utterings before such a post arrived. Not long!

You don’t get anything for free in business. Do you think Usminov will just ‘give’ Arsenal ‘x’ millions? If so you are deluded. All of the money that Usminov would ‘give’ or more accurately loan would have to be paid back at some point. Just like at Chelsea. If you are an owner of something, say a house or a business you can choose who you sell to and when. Similarly if you run the business you can choose who is on the board or not.

I don’t know much about either Kronke or Usminov but I do have experience of working with senior business leaders of large corporations. It is all about politics, positioning and messaging. We all need to understand their motivation or objectives. And don’t for one minute think that these guys wont change their minds or go back on what they have said previously, because they will….in a heartbeat.

Kronke is much more business like (in my view). No promises, no thrills, no spin. Usminov is playng a different game. Why?

I don’t care about either Kronke or Usminov but I do think the current strategy of the club is the right one, i.e be self sustaining and run as a profitable business. I know that isn’t very ‘football’ but football is now big big business . Like it not.

Does it really matter if the russian is worth 5 times more then the yank. The club currently runs at a profit and when they dont they borrow, much the same they would under either of these two guys. as someone mentioned any money given would be a loan, and therefore more costs at the end of the day.
Usmarov is not on the board because the other members did not want to work with him and not Kronke owns a majority so why would he want him on the board.
Hashguns, you pulled the racist card out, really? I have seen people pull this out on some strange occassions but this is well up there. Oh he didnt get what he wanted so the others guys must be racist. Your a muppet.
Also you want him to spend like chelsea, do you realise finanacial fair play is coming in and chelsea dont fall in line. So yeah great idea, lets spend lots of money, make a huge loss and then get kicked out of europe. I think you have been smoking just a bit to much hash mate.

Usmanov was never the right man for the job. He had almost a year to buy the shares of Lady Bracewell-Smith and he let the grass grow under his feet. He didn’t even see the takeover coming, even with the health Of the great Danny Fizman deteriorating – so he’s crap at business. Now he’s stuck with 30% of a club he’ll never control. One day his only option will be to sell his shares to Kroenke like everyone else. Danny always said he’ll be selling to Kroenke and Lady Bracewell-Smith announced she was selling. Ding Ding, wakey wakey Usmanov, move now or lose your chance. A few months late …. Usmanov loses his chance and boy, was he was enraged by it. lol. Had he bought the shares of Lady Bracewell-Smith, everyone would be selling to him, including Kroenke since he wouldn’t want 30% of shares of a club he’ll never control. So no, Usmanov has proven he’s a chump when it comes to business and we don’t want a chump for an owner.

    We want Stan. :)

It’s funny that everyone is talking abut kroenke other teams when they all suck, Kroenke is in it for the money. If Usmanov was Majority owner he would bring back in David Dein also which everyone would admit is Wengers other half, he did the business and got the players Wenger wanted and Arsenal are in dyer need for him back in the club. Although I would rather arsenal be owned by the AST as the fans care more about the club then the owners I do see Usmanov as a fan who clearly wants Arsenal and its fans to be the best as Kroenke would just pocket of his teams. Btw Kroenke owns the denver nuggets and their best player carmelo which was drafted and demanded a trade, all of their other best players were drafted are obtained in the trade but will leave once their contracts are up. The Rams have one of the worst records in nfl and the Colorado Rapids is pretty garbage to. How can you say Kroenke nows how to run a club when all his teams are worth talking about.

    2. The new Financial doping law makes this invalid from next season anyway
    3. Believe it or not, there is no dividends paid on Arsenal shares and therefore, none of the board are able to take the Arsenal ‘profit’ in anything other than wages
    4. We have the shroodest manager in the EPL. He will not risk Arsenals financial stability by bringing in players who wage demands are to exstravegant.

Like it or not, currently we are the 5th richest club in the world but still have £120m debt for the stadium. We can only hope that when this is paid off, we invest in the playing staff in such a way that we remain in the black but wins things too. Wenger has to stay and deliver on his promises and as fans, our loyalty to our club is unquestionable. This is played out by the fact that we have the highest Season ticket prices in the WORLD and still have a full stadium for EVERY home game and take more away supporters with when we travel than most other clubs.

Of course it would be better to have a man worth £17 billion in charge of the club. You only have to look at the investment in Chelsea and Man City to see that the wealthier the owner the bigger the investment. More importantly Usmanov is a fan who has been paying to watch Arsenal for years before buying into the club. That means he feels the same way about it we do do and doesn’t just see it as a way of making money. Why the board sold to a man with no allegiance to Arsenal, no love of the game and no real funds to invest in the club is beyond me. They profess to have the clubs better interests at heart but then make a decision which totally contradicts that.
The sooner we see the back of Kronke and his cronies the better, they will take us nowhere but down. They have no passion for Arsenal just the mighty dollar.

  32. dan says:

Financial fair play? If an investor comes in and clears off all the debt does that not put us in a more favorable financial condition – we can then use ALL available profits into improving the side?

Also, Kroenke has zero intention of investing his own money into the club, that is why he has stated he is unwilling to change anything. And he will be balancing his time and resources to manage his other sports ‘franchises’.

If Kroenke wanted what was best for the club, he would have sold to Usmanov, who has the resources to really do something now.

If Kroenke is unwilling to be chairman of the club he owns most of, does that mean he has little knowledge of the game or that being a passive investor and entrusting the board and wenger to run things the way they are is the only option he can see.

The reason an investor like kroenke moves in is to make more money. The reason an investor like usmanov moves in is to have some fun, as he is already loaded and his current holding will not present a potential financial drain, like owning other sports franchises, rather they will in all likelihood continue to make him more wealthy.

Kroenke has never professed any love for the Arsenal so I don’t understand some fans getting emotional about him. Kroenke is the type of owner who will seek to make money for himself by either continuing to maximize the share price(underinvesting in the squad) or siphoning off money through other means, dividends or more furtive arrangements. Usmanov on the other hand can afford to indulge his view of where he wants the club to go, before any rules can preclude.

As for me, I’m not worried, this foreign gambit of Kroenke’s is severly challenged, he’s bought his shares on the back of wenger/board’s plan to maximize profit through massive underinvestment, an underinvesment that they are having trouble pulling out of, and is not as sustainable a business model as many believe it to be. When the profits don’t roll in as expected in the coming seasons, usmanov can make his move, hopefully we are not too far from the top four at that time. By that time though it may be a bit late for usmanov to grace the club with his largesse.

And as for character, when have wenger/board ever told you the truth?

Financial fair play? Since when has the Arsenal been supported by so many financial analysts, and poor ones at that?

  38. Johnno says:

Didn’t Usmanov offer transfer money and to basically wipe the stadium debt? That’s a pretty good investment. Any club must tread with trepidation when dabbling into private ownership, such as Chelsea and Man City. Sure, they can stump up the massive transfer fees and relatively huge wages to blow clubs like Arsenal out of the water when competing for a player. But what happens to that club if the owner decides he’s bored and sells to someone who isn’t prepared to pay 300m a year in player wages? The concept of a self sustainable club is a positive one in case of this event, which both are advocating. The worrying thing is that Kronke has his other clubs and one doubts whether he’s heart is in it. He has probably heard how profitable the club is and thought, “I might get in on this”. I’m not sure whether his motivates lay with the club’s best interests, I think they lay with his. Usmanov wouldn’t be like this I don’t think. He doesn’t need to be, he is worth over 17b. What’s a few million profit a year to him? Back pocket change. The self serving board members must feel threatened by Usmanov as he isn’t after personal gains like they are, he’s after club success. Kronke must be very like minded with the board. I’m glad Usmanov is not going to sell his large stake in the club. After all, he did say what I’ve been thinking for a long time; surely investing money in the club, new players, wages and everything else to optimise on field performance and success would prove to be far, far more profitable for a club with increased sponsorship revenue, prize money, increased television revenue, hugely increased merchandise sales. Not to mention the fact that Arsenal could ask for another 20% or so on a transfer fee for a player on their roster who has won titles, chiefly being Premier League and Champions League titles. On top of that, you attract top players and retain your top players because you are winning titles. Nasri would have signed right away had we won the Premier League this season. But instead of this, the current board are more than content to hoard profits made from the from the running of the club and player sales. If second, third and fourth are acceptable, it’s only a matter of time until other clubs in the Premier League are wanting first place and squeeze us out of the top four and into Europa.

Okay, so on a more serious note. Anyone who feels that the board froze out Usmanov because they were greedy is unfamiliar with Arsenal’s history and also not very bright.

When Usmanov first tried to get onto Arsenal’s board, he was resisted by people who have been Arsenal fans for all their lives: People like Danny Fizman, whose last act before he died was to sell his shares to Kroenke to keep them out of Usmanov’s hands, people like Richard Carr and people like Nina Bracewell-Smith whose family has been involved with Arsenal for decades.

Fizman didn’t sell his shares to Kroenke because he was greedy, the man was dying he didn’t need money, and by selling his shares he was giving up any profits he might have had anyway. He sold his shares to Kroenke in spite of the fact that Usmanov offered him more money. He clearly loves Arsenal more than he loves money and he knows that Usmanov is bad for Arsenal.

I could go into the reasons why Usmanov would be had for Arsenal, but there are more reasons than can fit in one post. I’m going to repeat. The shareholder that decided to sell their shares to Kroenke instead of Usmanov were not motivated by greed. That argument makes no sense since they accepted less money just to keep their shares out of Usmanov’s hands. Even the Arsenal Supporters Trust has indicated that they prefer Kroenke to Usmanov.

DavidS, I am 22 years old and has been an ARSENAL fan for about one and a half DECADE and I did not, I repeat I DID NOT say that all the individual share holders were greedy.

I told that the board of directors were greedy. I think that the share holders were bullied by the board to make them sell their shares to Kroenke(who himself is one of the said members). Now if the board and the chairman want Kroenke to take over then why are the board members not selling their shares to Kroenke especially PETER HILL-WOOD who himself has 400 shares.

Also if the AST supports Kroenke then why are they doing whatever they can to avoid automatic take over by Kroenke.

The way I see it, it looks to me that the other board members have made a deal with Kroenke that he let them do what they have done in the past (which is destroying the club) and he will not interfere so long as he gets his share.

I dont understand the greed bit your talking about. The previous shareholders accepted £2,500 pounds per share less to sell to Kronke – is this greed, I dont see how. The owners do not take a dividend at present so how is this greed. Kronke wanting to receive a dividend in the future, well if you invested £1 billion into something would you not hope you some kind of return?
Seems many of you just want a sugar daddy to pay massive wages and huge transfer fees. Well will this not blow the budget and put us back into a loss making club. With new rules coming in how is this a good thing.
Finally, Kroenke owns the club, paid a lot of money for it, has heaps of people on the waiting list for season tickets. Like it or not, you are supporters and not owners. You job is the support the team, chat and discuss your concerns but you dont make the decisions. Moan as much as you like but he owns it because he paid for it. The thing I hate about english football and there supporters is the thought that the owners are just people that put money into the club and the supporters are the ones who should make the decisions.

@Tony. when people get fed up they will drive you out with your money. haven’t you seen the revolutions going on? anyway the owners didn’t take dividends because they know they are gonna get it in future anyway so don’t get fooled.Usmanov was going to bring David Dein and the board didn’t like it. period. and just like Unions the supporters trust can have bad apples among them who are easily bought to support the board.

    @L.J.

    22 huh? Figures.

Let me spell this out for you s-l-o-w-l-y. In order for someone to be motivated by greed, there has to be money involved. Since Arsenal does not pay dividends, the shareholders in general, and the members of the board in particular do NOT benefit when Arsenal makes profits. The money stays in the club. Now while it is true that the shares of a club can potentially have a higher value when the club makes profits, therefore meaning more money for a director who decides to sell, with the exception of Fizman, none of Arsenal’s board members have sold their shares in the last 3 year. You keep on talking about greed, but no director has benefitted financially from Arsenal’s transfer policy. Stop making up facts.

And this is where I will tell you to again go read about Arsenal’s history. You keep referring to the events of the last year, do you know that the events that led to Kroenke tking over Arsenal actually began almost 5 years ago? Read the history of the club you claim to love. One thing you will read about is the lockdown agreement that board members signed agreeing not to sell their shares to anyone outside of the board. You should also read about the reaction of the Arsenal Supporters Trust when both Kroenke and Usmanov tried to join the board a few years ago, and the board accepted Kroenke and froze out Usmanov. Learn something about your club’s history beyond the last year and a half.

lol stan is no doubt a good owner. hes very stable in terms of his sports business in america. however i do think usmanov is a great finance player. look at him, from a criminal to a billionare thats 8x richer than kroenke, thats a amazing achievement. usmanov wanted to takeover arsenal a few years ago but the board clearly doesnt like him because hes a fat russian that has criminal background.

I must confess to you that the real PROBLEM is the BOARD. The Board have shown their intent and what they are interested in. No sooner will they increase tickets and how about FANS(Realist) boycott match days. Are we Supporting a club that does not give us the desired result we need but heart break. Arsene is not the problem even though you sack him and bring a younger coach, the f@#$ing board wont change. and a a new coach would need all the resources he can get to move the club for just as the Arsene does need that right now! Nina BS knew this problem but went ahead in blocking usmanov’s bid. let that whoever is responsible to our lagging behind be removed. We need trophies not BROKEN HEART. We dont wanna go a decade with out silverwares
