Latest Arsenal Transfer News – Zarate & Mertesacker
We said earlier on today that things were hotting up in the transfer market and that is certainly the case.
Mauro Zarate had been linked with a possible move to the Emirates, but he will now remain at Lazio after they refused the player permission to leave on loan.
Zarate’s agent Giuseppe Bozzo has said, “With Zarate, the club president made a strong investment and he does not want to lose out. There are not many clubs willing to spend 20million Euros for Mauro and there is a 99% chance that he will remain at Lazio.”
So another player appears to have been struck off the list, but there could be some good news surrounding the arrival of a defender.
According to BBC Sport this morning Arsenal are in advanced talks with German defender Per Mertesacker. The Werder Bremen centre half said only last week, “I am a player of Werder Bremen and I like playing in the green-white of the club. Nothing will be changed on that. I love being skipper of the club and I proceed on the assumption that I will at least see out the campaign in the colours of Werder Bremen.”
Klaus Allofs is the general manager of Werder Bremen and he has made it clear that Arsenal have not yet made an offer for Mertesacker, but he is expecting them to do so soon.
If the news is true it is good news for Arsenal, but it may also mean that talks have broken down with Bolton over Gary Cahill. It depends on which way you look at it because it could mean that both players could be signed.
Arsenal fans will just be hoping at least one quality central defender is signed before tomorrow night with preference surely for Mertesacker.

i am glad traore is leaving .he has lost pace with all injuries…couldn’t imagine him and gibbs surviving even half the season..
Mertesacker and hopefully one more unlikely defender should close the deals in defence..
Wenger right now in france, hopefully signing M’vile and Hazard (as promised before the champions league tie against udinese)..Hazard would be bonus.

For crying out loud… Where is Park and Santos. No confirmation as yet. Those two players will not be enough to prevent the decay, if they do sign. We need two CD. That’s all. Nothing else. Cahill and Samba.,case closed. Stability in the back. Then the boys in the front can go express themselves like we know they can. I’m not sad about the defeat against L’pool and United. I saw an unlucky Arsenal side with potential. A little luck, a pair of new comers and we’ll punish again.

Mertesacker is basically Germans best centre back, he would be great at arsenal, possibly a new captain. Hes fairly young so he would suit Wenger, hes commanding so he’ll upgrade the youngsters, and i should say roughly the same things about Alex, but Alex is getting on abit. Either way, i would love to see either Alex or Mertesacker join Arsenal, come on Wenger dont make another mistake like the amount you’ve done all through the transfer window..

Santos + Alex or Cahill or Mertesacker, plus Sagna, Vermalen would be an awsome backline, add SzCz in goal that would be Solid. Would like to see 2 of the 3 CB’s mentioned in to offer some cover / options. Add a couple more midfielders, (break the bank and go for Sneijder) and a striker and I think we can start to look forward to the rest of the season. THEO FOR CF! GUNNER FOR LIFE

At the moment all this is speculation. We need concrete signing. I would love to hear the words – ” we have signed …. ” (insert any number of the following names; Cahill, mert, santo, malouda, park … Etc). That fact is, right now, at this moment, we have no CB, CM, LB. Until we see these names on a squad list, we are still in danger. Please, please, please give us what we need.

Btw – anyone mentioning Hazard in a desired squad, loses my respect. He is not signing with us this window, so pls wake up. Let’s hope for what actually could be, otherwise you may as well suggest Messi and Xavi in our team – it ain’t gonna happen, so be real.

Germany coach Joachim Low has confirmed he has given permission for Per Mertesacker to leave the national squad in order to travel to London to have a medical at Arsenal. The Werder Bremen defender had been preparing for Germany’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Austria on Friday.

Personally I would prefer Cahill as he’s younger, has EPL experience and is more dextrous than Mertesacker. Per would be great for high long balls or guarding the goal during set plays but the likes of Hernandez, Welbeck, Aguero, Tevez, Torres etc would destroy Mertesacker with their speed with a through ball. Cahill adds more agility and is more robust than Mertesacker, and although ze German may have more guile and wit, Arsenal really needs a no-nonsense physically aggressive defender who would put his boot through the ball into the nosebleed sections of the stadium. Does the manner of losing to Birmingham ring any regretful bells?
I hope those of you who covet the German, have seen videos of him get beaten many a time when the ball’s played behind him. On the contrary I believe he adds good leadership and a wealth of experience albeit none in the EPL. Don’t get me wrong, if he gets signed I wouldn’t be complaining. I actually hope we get him but only with Cahill signed too. If it came down to “be in Wenger’s shoes for a day”, I’d pick Cahill first and SPEND THE REST ON BUYING WORLD CLASS rather than picking dried fruits which once were ripe at another club.

Arsenal will sign Mertersaker, Santos, Chu Young (now been confirmed) and probably Benayoun. Apart from Mertersaker, all terrible signings. Our only hope is for an injury free season after everyone’s back, and from what ive seen so far, FAT CHANCE…….

Definatley Malik, Alex is my number 1 on the Defender wishlist. Top Quality, better than Cahill. Really hope we at least try for Sneijder he would really bring the midfield alive with Wilshire when he is fit. Just hearing that Scott Parker is on his way to the Skum, thats a shame he would have been a good signing.

Just heard that Clichy said he never practiced defense training with Arsenal. If that is the case, then Santos and Metersacker may have a hard time proving their worth. Let’s hope Wenger will fix this a.s.a.p. or bring in Keown to help with the defensive training.

would like to see mertesecker,and cahill or raul albiol(approx20), mvilla(20), martin (reports say 12)and ayew (buy out of 12?)or shaqiri if we got 80 to spendtyhen this should be achievable. all youngish and would add some steel and skill.Would love hazard or sneijder/gotze or benzema but dont think theyre going to happen.hope we get hazard in the future.

Looks like we have Park in attack, Mertesecker and Santos in defence and looks likely that AW is trying to convine M’Vila and Hazard of a move to the Emirates. Those five signings would placate me for what has been three seasons of indifferent signings.
