Let’s be blunt – Why did Wenger replace The Ox with a fat lazy Russian?

Another defeat. Three back to back losses and we continue to drift in limbo, detached from the top four, hopelessly trying to sustain a top half table finish. All but a single goal mustered from a poor display leads us neatly back to the beginning of the season where we started. In poor form and with no hope. I will be blunt because it is time someone was.
The first half was played like a mid table championship side, balls smashed from back to front as if a midfield did not exist. Van Persie played the role of the resident “ghost” and Walcott ran around so much that he was left in a permanent dazed state that caused him to not be able to play a single decent call. Arsenal played like the away team, timid and shell shocked as though the sheer occasion was too much. Once again the SAME tired formation was played again and Oxlade Chamberlain provided the only display worthy of applause. Sadly, he was an 18 year old, sent to a man’s game playing and even his delicious skill could not influence the match.
The midfield was nothing short of atrocious. Wenger’s decision to select Rosicky was calamitous as for a player that has not scored in 2 years, Rosicky fancies himself as a Danny Guthrie, shooting speculatively whenever he feels the need. Not only does this waste time but also frustrates the rest of the team as when Rosicky finally manages to make a one on one, he decides to PASS the ball?? Brought in to replace Robert Pires, Rosicky is useless and I shall hold the door open for him. Arteta is undoubtedly a tidy, decent player but it shows how weak Arsenal are as a team by the fact that they miss him. To play badly without a world class player is fair enough but to play shocking football without an average player is not acceptable. Our midfield lacks any spark of creativity and all those faithfuls who continue to assure me that “Jack will be back” soon are misguided. Wilshire is indeed a good player but belief in a player to come back from long term injury and suddenly rejuvenate Arsenal’s extinct title chances are unfounded.
Arsene has stated that he does not want to lose games, purely because he does not have any fallbacks so why does he not BUY one. To wait on players to regain fitness is essentially placing faith in the stock market. Gibbs will NEVER be able to string more than 8 successive starts together. Yannaris, however, played a very good game it must be said. Koscielny also played extremely well it must be said but in my honest opinion he would be more suited to a CDM role, as his pace and tackling ability, coupled with his vision, heading accuracy and dribbling skill are wasted at the back. Him and Song should be swapped as Song has lost his bite in midfield.
I respect Arsene more than any other manager ever to have graced the Premier League but today he alienated me. At 1-1 Arsenal were pushing for the elusive second and what does he do? He replaces a young, hungry exciting player, with a fat lazy Russian. Less than 5 minutes later we are behind… What are we supposed to think? Has the objective of the league become, “who can throw away the most promising positions?” For the life of me I cannot explain Wenger’s actions. He further irritated me by giving Park only 10 minutes to make an impact when he deserves longer. He should have started the game in CAM behind Robin.
Where do we go from here? I don’t even know. We are caught in a unique transition phase. A hand-full of extremely exciting new talent, one world class superstar, a collection of useless antiques and a glut of average punters. Unlike Chelsea we wont continue to scrape wins because our antiques were never world class to begin with and we rely too heavily on our undeveloped youth. In my view the only way we are going to qualify for Europe this season with our current squad is to win the Champions League. I won’t hold my breath.

Thank you for telling it “Like it is”. Paul Scholes said last season “what’s the point of Arsenal?”. I now know what he was getting at. I’ve said it before and I will say it again this is the most thread bare and weak Arsenal side I have ever seen. Poorly led, even when we looked like we were going to get something from this game, decisions were made on the substitutions that defy logic. There is now a need to rebuild, properly, or we will drop like a stone and become a very second rate side. Forget writing in these columns the side we should pick from what we have, it makes no difference who we pick, some of the players are not good enough and until they go and proper replacements are recruited, this great club of ours will not be back in it’s rightful place.

It feels really bad when arsene wenger say ‘We played our game but weren’t rewarded’… he is living in dreams with bunch of non performing players and still sticking with them … why he is not buying ?? The amount recieved in last transfer windows was much higher what he spent …

I agree that AW made a mistake today by taking of the OX, but he has been unwell and I think he did not want to risk a full 90 with him. He did make the much needed change at RB though which stopped nani. This was brave as Yannaris has had no prem league game time, and to make your debut against utd 1-0 down took bottle to play how he did.
I just want the fans to cut AW a bit of slack!! All you fans that are asking for his head should be very careful what you wish for! Give me the name of one top class manager that would be better than AW at managing this team on the shoe string budget he is given! AW was the one that in the summer went to the board and asked for improved contracts for VP, TV, JW, AR, TW. Guess what THE BOARD said NO! If you want someone out, focus on them! Any other manager would have walked by now! Why do you think he has not been sacked? Because he performs the way the board want him too! Remember that AW is also yet to pen a new contract, so keep booing him and you may get your wish!

I strongly agree that our incredible Ox shouldn’t have been substituted for Arshavin, but i don’t think he deserve all d names been directed at him especially reffering to his nationality i think that is way outta line. All d same Arshavin needs to show more hunger and desire to win games, whether he is been played out of position or not, as dats always the lame excuse dats is been used to justify his poor form. I blame wenger for this tactical mistake bcos since Arshavin came on he added nothing really to d game

It was a total disgrace – I don’t understand why we give credit to players that don’t fight for our badge! Theo Walcott, disagree or agree, Is absolutely useless and to be honest If you don’t agree get your tongue out… Each game he lacks that instinct and he hasn’t ever had it – to wear number 14 is ridiculous as it should never have been given to him… Andrey Arshavin you know that he doesn’t want to be there you can see it, he had a brilliant first season and fizzled out but what does Mr Wenger do… Keep him (BRILLIANT). Alex Oxlaid-Chamberlain was the most exciting thing I have seen for Arsenal this season sheer delight but to replace him was detramental to Arsenal’s chances. What worries me Is that Manchester United weren’t even playing full throttle and at times could have scored a few. WE ARE A ONE MAN TEAM NOW AND I HAVE TO BLAME ARSENE WENGER – YOU DO NOT SELL YOUR PRISED ASSETS – LOOK AT TOTTENHAM KEEPING LUKA MODRIC THEY DIDN’T SELL. It’s greed because that’s all it seems to be about money with Arsenal. We won’t spend, the players are priced up to high.. BULL. lets stop slagging the players because they are playing to the manager’s instructions. everytime someone goes to cross the ball there is always 1 person in the box or showing the desire. our formation is confusing: players just running rings and passing without purpose and attack. Rosicky is also lazy and he does not bother defending. He even turns his back when a free kick is being taken. Our captain never says a word to the players so does our manager. players who were once good have been and are still being played out of position and hence can’t get the best out of them. I WILL BET YOU A MANAGER LIKE PEP, HIDDINK, ANCELLOTTI, FERGIE WOULD WORK WITH THIS VERY SAME TEAM BUT PLAY BETTER AND WIN THINGS. Mr Wenger needs to be a director/scout/juniors coach because he is always wrapping players in cotton wool even when they play bad he leaves them till the 80th min. CAN ANY SUPPORTER TELL ME WHEN HAVE THEY SEEN WENGER MAKE A HALF TIME SUBSTITUTION DUE TO POOR PERFOMANCE? I don’t know what to think anymore, Is Wenger to blame? Is the board to blame? I think there must be something going on between Wenger and the board.. I believe the board should be supporting Wenger more. I hated the fact that Chamberlain was substituted, but I think Wenger did so because he stretched his calf during the game and maybe he did not want to risk one of his best players right now, to ALSO be injured.
We are currently losing 10 (most of them important) men.. Looking at some of those players, IF we had those, we could have easily won the game. So, therefore, I think the answer lies in depth. Depth and of course, quality. Clearly the team was nervous in the first half.. And not composed at all, it was like they were scared of United. Then when we finally realised that there’s nothing to be afraid of, that United are just like any other team the Gunners can beat, we were playing amazing football. Then, at the blink of an eye, we lost everything again.. And that could be because of the substitution.. We should seriously invest in some depth. Oh, and a severe reform in the medical staff.

Arsene had made some bad decision calls on subs before but this with AOC and arshavin was the worst. How the hell can you take off one of the best players and replace him with one of the laziest? I’m sorry but to me, arsene has lost the plot! Today’s game has now confirmed to me, there is serious mistakes made by our manager and board that we need a complete revamp in the arsenal club if we’re ever gonna be serious contenders.

It’s actually taken me this long for my nausea and disgust at Wenger to die down enough for me to post. He’s lost the plot and needs to go! When RVP saw that Ox, the best player on the pitch today witch Koscielny a close second) he looked at Wenger and screamed Noooo when he saw the fat Russian fashion degree coming on. If you’re captain disagrees with your decision then you’ve got it wrong. The fans should demand action and I wish someone ( a player) would come out and publicly question the decision.
DJ was rubbish and only saved himself from being the worst player today by AA coming on. AA was man of the match today, but it was for Man U. We had Man U on the back foot and Wenger’s decision lost us the match, most likely a top 4 finish and that means he’s lost us our Captain who will surely want to leave.

The tide finally turned last night. Wenger finally got the abuse he has been warranting for the last 5 years.
The faith is evaporating, the players quality waning, the brilliance fading, the decisions debilitating.
The Title is over, The quest for 4th, pretty much over. The Carling Cup is over, the FA Cup hanging in there.
Three back to back losses, a first in 5 years. Worst away record for goals conceeded in the premiership. This is the sorry state we are in.
The tides turned. Time for a new manager and wave of quality that this club deserves.

Firstly Djouru is not a bad player hes a decent cb. Yennaris had a good game at right back especially considering he was also played out of position.. hes a cm not a rb. Rosicky had a good game and proved to me that hes a good squad player. Koscielny kicked ass and i think when all the back is fit he and Vermaelan will make an amazing partnership. Ramsey a bit disappointing but hes still very young, he been thrown in the deep end, when Jack was developing last year he had had Cesc along side him, Ramsey has Arteta(or Rosicky), not really the same thing is it? Ramsey, Wilshere and Song will thrive together though when theyre all fully fit in a month. Theo had a bad game but i still think that he is a good player, he should be tried down the middle though i think his pace would be deadly up front. Ox is amazing. Yes van Persie did miss that glorious chance but in fairness he didnt really expect the pass from Rosicky (whos clearly lacking confidence) and also he was the when that put us level. We need to get a striker and maybe a winger or attacking midfielder that will score 10-15 goals a season to take some of the pressure off van Persie someone like Pires, maybe one of these Marko Marin, Hazard, Gotze, Lavezzi… And last but not least dont any of you dare criticise Wenger he is one of the best managers ever, if it wasnt for him we wouldnt be fighting for top 4 every year wed be fighting to stay in the league AW has kept us up there for so long he made the ‘THE INVINCIBLES’ well sort of, Wenger has always been able to pick out great attacking talent, Henry, van Peris, Bergkamp, Pires, Adebayor etc. but he never really came up with solid defence, he inherited his great defence when he came to Arsenal so when Pat leaves in the Summer what I think he needs to do is get someone like Adams as Assistant Manager he will sort out our frailties at the back…

I go to see the odd match at the emirates so am not a season ticket holder and would’nt want to be think of all the dosh wasted on crap team with a crap manager! If i was one of the season ticket holders i would demand a refund this magnificent stadium deserves a better team better more incisive football and a great manager at the helm who is’nt afraid to spend money on the right players and more with prem/english league experiance and also very importantly a manager who does’nt make wrong decisions like taking off our best player after he setup the equaliser and were then after a winning goal and putting on a fat useless russian who does’nt even want to play for us or even in this country? I’m so cut right now but I am happy at the fact that eventually these players are coming back to replace these:
Wilshere for Ramsey
Sagna for Djourou
Gervinho for Walcott
Arteta for Rosciky (although he had a fantastic game and he should get more starts)
And the OX I believe should now permanently replace Arshavin.
That’s 5 solid players replacing 5 inconsistent players.
I believe there are good times ahead for us, maybe 2 or 3 signings and get rid of the deadwood going into next season we shall be on the road to success again.

Who made the long pass right in the legs of AOC that led to the 1st goal??? It was Rosicky…. he was at a RWB position and he passed it to Chambo who was at LW….. the pass was point accurate….

I think he’s just an enemy of Arsenal’s success…
Players like Arshavin, Almunia, Diaby, Benayoun,Chamakh, Djourou, Squillacci should find their way out but instead he’s just using them yet he already mentioned about their departure.

Rosicky rose to the occasion and i wonder why many gooners didn’t realise that, OX was our man of the match and we need another quality striker to take the pressure off RVP’s shoulders. Lastly this season we are 5/6th unless AW rescues us by making the urgently needed signings and must be a CAM and STRIKER.

I do not know what to say. Am a Nigerian Arsenal fan and i can assure you the reaction of the Arsenal fans at emirates when the Ox was substituted was same with arsenal fans all around the world. Even our captain could not hold his disapproval. now get me right, when a king’s move is opposed by the whole kingdom and he goes ahead to push such move, destruction awaits!. WENGER IS NOW MY KNOW ALL. SUCH A STUPID SUBSTITUTION. It only shows that the people that have been pushing for wenger’s replacement do actually have a point.If you were veiwing from a television, you would have noticed that even the camera men did not approve of wenger’s substitution (the showed clips of angry fans, then followed in arsene we trust banner)

Yesterday game against United was’nt really surprise to me,cos i knew we would lose.If we can lose to Fulham and Swansea,is it man utd that we spare us? Thank God it was’nt another 8-2.With the rate at which Arsenal is loosing matches these days,we shall soon start fighting relegation battles,and by then it will be too late.It will be interesting to Arsene Wenger and Peter-Hill Wood face by then.

Hi,
I really don’t think that Rosicky was playing really that bad as if we need to throw him out of the club. He is a talented player and he was unlucky to have not scored once. His pass for Van Persie was really selfless. He was surrounded by by 2 defenders and the goal keeper. He took the right decision. Really sad that you have nothing to say anything about Van’s shot. I thought we lost the game there.
It was a bad day and more importantly our conversion of chances to goals is really poor. Arsen needs to give them some school boy lessons on how to finish an attack. Buying I really don’t think will help that much at this point time. The new guy will have no time to fit in.
We need to look at the services of Arshavin, Walcoot and Djourou. They either need to buckle up or pack up. Heard a roumour that Van Persie is planning ot leave after yesterday’s game.

I agree that The Ox shouldn’t have taken out, but the only reason Wenger did this substitution was to win the game. cause this is what we need to do at home, we need to win and not finsh the game 1-1.
