Marseille vs. Arsenal UCL Preview, Prediction and Line-up

Marseille vs Arsenal preview by KJ

The first game of the Champions league group stage is upon us and as we all know, it’s the most difficult and competitive group of them all. We face by far the easiest team in Marseille and even they are definitely no pushover. They have quality players like Valbuena and Thauvin who can damage us if we aren’t careful.

Being an away game, I can see us adopting a similar tactic to the one we did at Sunderland and just sit back and absorb the pressure before ruthlessly counter attacking. We can move the ball very quickly with Ramsey, Wilshere and Özil in the team. Walcott is going to have to step up and be more clinical with his chances as Marseille, I predict, aren’t going to give us many.

Defensively, we also have to be astute and it’s great that we have the ever vital Mertesacker back in defence. We can play our best 4 defenders and we’ll need it as Marseille are a far more threatening team than Sunderland.

Line up:
Szczesny
Sagna – Mertesacker – Koscielny – Gibbs
Flamini – Ramsey
Walcott – Özil – Wilshere
Giroud

This team is definitely strong enough to take down Marseille, but the problem comes when the starting line up potentially stagnates during a game. How can we switch it up? The bench options aren’t great and we’ll have to look to the likes of Akpom and Ryo to change the dynamics of a match.

I think the key to winning this match is the defensive partnership between Mertesacker and Koscielny and whether Walcott can put his chances away. We have to win this match as it’s only going to get harder as the group stages go on. We need to take care of both games against Marseille and Wenger knows it.

I think we’ll win 2 – 1 on the night.

The Marseille match is going to be a lot harder than people think. I think this will be our toughest match yet.

The problem with wilshere on the left is that he tends to drift in, effectively leaving only Gibbs on the left flank. But I am afraid he is the only option available for us today. 1-2 to arsenal. Ramsey to score. COYG!

Santi does the same thing. But not as much as Jack. He needs to be a bit more disciplined staying near the left. When were controlling games its not a problem, but on the counter we need to be aware.

I heard Marseille sporting director’s son got killed. Very sad to hear. They will have reason to show their gratitude to the director. So they will not easily be pushed around.

But I believe our boys will bring in a positive result today.

This game will be tough, but I’m sure marseille will be fearful of our attacking threat. As long as we impose ourselves on them and win the midfield fight, I can see us winning 2-0.

I’d rather start monreal and bring on gibbs as an impact sub on the left wing

I’m a big fan of Thauvin and looking forward to watching him play (just no tonight, I think they should save him for Dortmund and Napoli…)

our revenue will be well over 300 mil by the end of next season with the recent deals we have signed plus the additional tv money so dont worry about that

Tim payton said after the recent AST that by 2014 our revenue will be well over 300mill+
And man united is a financial powerhouse and has the most supporters worldwide we shouldn’t be comparing our revenue to theirs.
But by 2015 we should be generating more revenue than bayern.
Things are looking good for our club.

Our revenue will make a giant leap from next season. The new TV premier league deal is worth about 20m per team per season our new fly emirates deal 30m a season a increase of about 22m per season. Our new kit deal that is said to be worth 32 – 35 mil per season which will be a increase of at least 25m per season. Not to mention other smaller deals that are constantly changing & improving. So I think we’ll be getting 80m + per season. Easily.

Am I the only person who thinks RVP actually heard that whistle when he kicked the ball at the Nou Camp? That’s what I always thought, but hey, if I said it at that time, I would have been eaten alive :D.

So, Hayden has moved ahead of Frimpong in the pecking order
Isaac Hayden a very talented CB or DM who is playing more in the latter position these days. Is on the bench tonight

Frimpong shouldn’t be playing for Arsenal IMHO. But hey, he might just make me eat my words. But he really should have developed more than he has by now. He’s about the same age with Wilshere, Oxlade-chamberlain and Jenkinson but they show far more promise. Wenger should free him so that he can realize his potential elsewhere. It’s harsh, I know, but we really need to raise the standard of the team.

Wilshere, Ox and Jenks are all getting valuable game time. Frimpong has the potential to be a midfield enforcer. He needs vital first team game time”with us” not some other squad…

@leo do you think it’s more a case of what position we need cover for more, Frimpong can’t play as a defender I don’t think I’d trust him in defence he’d end up giving loads of penalties away so he’s limited to central midfield where he’s well down the pecking order as it our strongest position. Hayden however is our best youth central defender & due to us not buying a central defender we could end up being short, train with the first team will help him enormously can’t see him playing tho unless we get into a desperate position.

Got to agree with others tho I can’t see frimpong making it at arsenal now, a couple of seasons ago he looked really promising but he’s hardly developed & I’m not overly impressed by his attitude so if he doesn’t take a leaf out of ramsey’s book show more dedication frimpongs gone at the end of this season time to give someone else a chance. He’ll probable have a decent career tho maby Someone like Fullam will take him back.

Marseille are going to be tough opposition tonight. They came second to Paris Saint Germain in Ligue 1 last year and have some class players. On the subject of Ligue 1, we have the previous league winners top scorer at Arsenal in Olivier Giroud! Allez les Rouges

I watch Ligue 1 games occasionally (BeInSport has pretty good coverage here in US), so I can tell you for a fact that it won’t be a walk in the park for us. Marseille is a good team, especially defensively, so I predict it won’t be a high scoring affair. We absolutely MUST convert all of our chances, as I don’t think we’ll get a lot of them. Theo, and the rest have to step up, and be a lot more clinical. 2-1 Arsenal is my prediction. COYG!!!

If man united recouped 19mill from vanpersie shirt sales, surely we must recoup anywhere from 15-25mill from özil shirt sales.

Dench needs to go on loan again like Jack did with Bolton. He could develop much better and faster than sitting on the arsenal bench and waiting for capital 1 matches.
Really like frimpong (even though he supports Man U)
