Max: Arsenal to play in Malaysia and China this summer
Arsenal Heading For Asia by Max Baker
Arsenal Football Club is heading to Asia for their 2011/2012 pre-season tour Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis confirmed. The tour will consist of two matches, the first in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur against a Malaysian XI on July 11 and the second in China where the Gunners will play Hangzhou GreenTown in Yiwu City.
”Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is excited to be visiting both Malaysia and China.” Gazidis said.
”The club has a tradition of playing in Malaysia going back to the 1960s. This will be our fourth visit to Malaysia, having last visited Kuala Lumpur in 1999. We are also looking forward to returning to China, where we last played a pre-season friendly in Beijing in 1995.
”It will also be a wonderful experience for the club and our players, many of whom will be visiting Malaysia and China for the first time.”
The confirmation of the tour’s location has thrilled Gooners in the two countries but has left Arsenal supporters in the nations of Japan and the United States, thought to be the frontrunners to land the tour, disappointed.
In January the club announced that they would tour the United States, majority owner Stan Kroenke’s homeland, sometime in the future and USA Gooners were hoping that would be sooner rather than later.
In February the Daily Mirror reported that Japan was the most likely to be graced by the Gunners presence even going as far to say that the deal had been done but it has been said that the tragic earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan caused Arsenal to call off the tour.
