Why Arsenal Should Keep Tomas Rosicky by Max Baker

It has come to my attention via the various Arsenal forums, and websites that a lot of Arsenal fans would like the club to send Tomas Rosicky on his way. I would agree if on-the-field performance was all that mattered but the fact is it doesn’t and it’s what he does off the pitch that really counts.

Rosicky was signed by Arsenal before the 2006/2007 season and was immediately given the number 7 shirt vacated by Robert Pires and I don’t think it is a stretch to say that he hasn’t really lived up to the expectations that were put on him when he arrived at the Emirates. The Czech Republic captain was very good in his first season with Arsenal and was absolutely fantastic in his second until walking off the pitch against Newcastle in the FA Cup in February 2008 with an apparent hamstring pull. At the time we all thought, “Damn he’s going to be out for three weeks!” Well we were wrong; he would go on to miss the next 18 months.

Ever since his injury nightmare he hasn’t really recovered physically but he still has his footballing brain. Rosicky is one of the most intelligent attackers the game has ever seen, it’s almost like he sees the game in slow motion and knows exactly what to do next, his playmaking skills earned him the nickname “Little Mozart” at Borussia Dortmund. The problem is that his injury riddled body can no longer keep up with his head, but that doesn’t mean he can’t pass on his knowledge of the game to the younger players in the team, and if you look at the progressions of Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott it looks like he already has.

Rosicky also is level-headed, doesn’t mind sitting on the bench, and has never been any kind of dressing room problem. I really don’t see a downside to keeping Rosicky around for another year or perhaps making him a coach of some sort.

I totally agree with you. I rate Rosicky to be a fine player and a very influential one too. We need the leaders of our team to stay on, especially considering the fact there aren’t that many in our team and some of the younger ones are too cocky who need to keep their feet on the ground. Rosicky is still useful on the pitch, when coming off the bench he is one of the very players in our team who actually shoots from outside the box. Along with that, he can make that piercing pass which can win you crucial games. His influential figure can only be good for the likes of Ramsey and Wilshere who are still learning their trade.

Are you serious? Rosicky was on a downhill spiral before he got injured and since he has been back has been poor at best!!! I have not renewed my season ticket to be watching players well past their best. Granted Rosicky was once a very good player but now he is not good enough. I have no idea how you can heap praise on him for the progression of other players, judge him on his poor performances. Personally I would drive him to the Airport!!!

Thanks God arsenal has some good news to tell the fans on the 1st july. The bad one will be the one of selling rosisky the guy plays with passion, the guy shots, the guy has good maner and good paces. Remember he came back from 18 months injury he is still going 2 improve more as he got enough time to recover , and remember we need experienced players and he is one of those. We need rosisky. We should sell denilson, bedtner, almunia, diaby even arshavir and fabrigas since he plays in england when the heart is in spain. Arsenal will soon hav many fabrigas . There is no season whithout a star. Plz, plz keep rosisky. May God bless u all

so what? we are supposed to keep him around, put him on the bench whilst continuing to pay his HIGH wages instead of freeing up the wage budget and get some £ by selling him?

When deciding to keep a player or let him go I suppose you have to look at things like squad numbers, wages and other things as well as the players skills. Thomas will never be a first eleven player again but, being a fan of his, I always enjoyed the moment when he came on as a substitute.
The game seemed to take on a different diamension, the pace went up a notch or two, and he wasn`t afraid to have a go at goal. So, what I`m saying is. Should there be room for him and he`s fit enough for half a game or so I`d like Wenger to keep him. Thomas always enjoys his football and it shows, he`s good to have around.

Well, contrary to what many fellow fans believe, I am a big fan of Rosicky and Eboue. I am, not I was. I have always wished the two guys would get the play time that fellas like Arshavin and Bendtner have been getting! These two are the kind of player who, when they have the ball, are comfortable running with it,thus opening the game up. They will try to give the game some forward velocity when everybody is content to pass the ball around for no apparent advantage. Rosicky is a near genius. The mistakes these guys make are the kin that gets sorted by more playing time- not less. No player becomes a star by being on the bench season after season and being juggled from one position to the next whenever that little play time is available.

players like diaby rosicky and chamakh were not the problem last season they just take the blame for wenger and the first 11s shortcomings!

keep rosicky coz if he gets a chance next season im sure he will take it, plus after being out so long it took him nearly all last season to get match fit. look at ramsey and how long its taking him and he was only out half as long

    @ Max Baker

Good point about his physical inabilities to execute what his footballing brain is processing. On the contrary, Arsenal needs more hunger and mongrel to grind out games like the top teams do. Rosicky can no longer compete at the highest level. Although his wisdom is useful, it doesn’t outweigh the prospects of signing a reliable midfielder who is younger, taller , faster and technically equipped.

Rosicky would be a good coach as you mentioned, but we have the Professor who will instill the knowledge that is required to win. Most people don’t know that when training Wenger makes his team go though every pass step by step until they reach the opposing goal. He assigns a set number of passes to be made before they reach midfield and another set to reach the sticks. Every pass, movement, transition, through ball and defensive play is drilled into the players. This allows Arsenal to play the game we do as a disciplined free flowing style. In summary, I believe Rosicky can be of value but only in a suit for Arsenal or as a technical adviser. It’s time for him to move on but we are grateful for his services. Another quality player cursed with injuries.

No one talks about Emmanuel Frimpong, so if you write another article soon, please tell us more. Not too many fans might know that Frimpong in midfield would be menacing for any opposition. This guy plays with endless energy and is always in your face trying to win the ball back. His direct approach in tackling is amazing, constantly pressuring the ball, cutting off passes and making the right runs to push the ball forward. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him break through this year. His time was last year only to be halted by a knee injury. This saw the berth of Wilshere so we are thankful.

I also really like rosicky (another player who could have been truly great were it not for injuries), but his performances have dropped and he is on a lot of money. I don’t think it would hurt the squad at all if he moved on to be honest. We have young, motivated players like lansbury who are waiting for their chance and are good enough to be more useful than tomas to be frank.
As for him being made a coach – who knows how well that suits him, or if he even wants that kind of role??? Great players aren’t always great coaches.

Contrary to what you say, what really counts at a football club for a football player is how well they play on the field. There’s moments in the article I agreed with you mate, but I’m afraid overall I’d have to disagree.

Like you said his presence off the pitch is very positive, but I think as a player his time is up with Arsenal.

Before we signed him from Dortmund I regarded him as a TOP player as he proved with Czech Republic during the 2006 World Cup and I preyed Wenger would pull his finger out and sign him. He did have a decent first year and better second but since his injury which he obviously can’t help, he hasn’t even been half the player.
Were a club that expects glory and looking after deadwood seems unprofessional.
I think it would be great if we kept him on as a coach but especially with Arsenal and the way we play, he can’t hack it anymore!
Also a problem we’ve had lately is the signing of too many similar players.. ‘Small, quick, intelligent attacking midfielders’ all well abd good making these signings but there has to be a balance of ‘strength, leadership and determination’ which unfortunately with Arsenal I just don’t see!

If we kept him, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, but we need to step up more so now than ever with the Big 4 looking more like a Big 6!

    Bendtner, Almunia, Denilson OUT
Samba, Cahill, Parker and Aguero in :)

I agree Max, Rosicky is a fantastic player and great role model. I still feel he has more to offer both on and off the pitch. I felt he lost a lot of weight during his injury and this led to him being knocked off the ball quite easily. Which was unheard of in his Dortmund days and before his injury with us. He was also starting to throw himself into a few more tackles towards the back end of last season which leads me to believe he is getting his confidence and strength back. At his best Rosicky can be one of the best midfielders in the world i just hope he may return to that level for a couple more seasons.

Not only was he sulking on the field after being brought on to play in Carling cup games, he also showed a lack of leadership by not attempting to lead by example. The guy is years past his prime and the worst part about it is that he believes he isn’t. He believes he should be in our starting 11. Some people would use that belief to fuel their efforts during the limited opportunities they get. Rosicky goes about on the field contributing next to nothing. I would rather give our younger, no experience players a chance rather than keep him. Get him the **** off the team and you’ll see someone else who actually wants to compete for a spot.

should have kept eduardo and sold rosicky instead. eduardo is still a great player and proved it when he scored against us. i won’t forget how he chose not to celebrate. can someone please elaborate what rosicky has done for arsenal last season besides his one goal? i can think of one, he contributed to the 4-4 draw at newcastle!!

  68. All arsenal fans in Nigeria is waiting for throfies.Keeping those makes the manager not to know whom to replace.I still believe that arsenal need to improve.and for them to improve they must offload they likes of Rosicky;Bentiner, Arshivam,Squallica,Denilson,Chamake,

i love to see Rosicky in the arsenal shirt. He has being the source of boost for me still remaining an arsenal fan. I think he needs more time and i believe he can still do better if he’s giving the opportunity. He’s got the brain and well experienced enough to remain an arsenal player. i love him.

Couldn’t disagree more, we employ footballers to play football not impart knowledge. We pay coaches very well for that, as for little Mozart I’m sure it seemed that way to Dortmund fans but the cold hard truth is, he was never good enough for arsenal just another budget player like hleb

Yeah! We need him like a hole in the head. This guy has no physicality and to make it worse he is always short of the match pace.

If this article was written during his time in Dortmund, I’ll agree with u. However, at this current time, I totally disagree with this article. Ask yourself this question. Do you think Arsenal will slump if Rosicky left? I don’t think so. Next question, do you think by fielding Rosicky, Arsenal have higher chances winning in games. Based on track record, I don’t think so also. He’s an average player if he fit to play. Based on track record, he spend most of the time recuperating. It is not his fault, he just unlucky. Nonetheless, it is liability to the team. In summary, he should go. If you want off the field leadership/experience get ex-player as a coach. Bergkamp maybe…..

Dis reminds me of flamini’s case…d dude was particularly angry cos when he needed arsenal, they let him down by not wanting to extend his contract when he was being benched by Gilberto Silva.AW decided to give him more playtime to help him.And as faith will have it,gilberto had injuries that period….and we saw what flamini was all about!
Rosicky is a special talent that can change a game anytime.let’s giv dis dude 1 more season please. He’ll pick-up.who can stop whatever he/she does for 18 months and get back at it perfectly?
Man U̶̲̥̅̊ kept hagreaves with his injuries(they still won trophies!)
The problem is not rocisky…it’s the team!,board and AW!

I will be extremely disappointed if Arsenal sell Rosicky. To me, his ability to pick out a piercing pass is unsurpassed in the Arsenal squad……….give him a good pre-season and I’m sure he’ll be getting back to near his best. He is a true quality player, and I’m always much happier with him in the side.

    I can’t agree more.

Rosicky is a fantastic player, and he can still be very useful for 2 or 3 seasons.

He was out for 18 MONTHS, it’s not easy to come back from that.

And remember the first matches of the last seasons, he was great.

watched him against Udinese and he was terrible. no pace, not at all mobile and kept misplacing passes. when frimpong came on for him, we looked a different team. the guy must be on £60k a week and he just isnt worth it.
