Max: Wenger is preparing to surprise us all!
All Signs Point to Wenger Spending Big by Max Baker
As many of you have probably figured out, Arsene Wenger is a stubborn individual and one who does not like to admit it when he is wrong. However, he seems different this off-season and maybe the manager has had a revelation regarding Arsenal’s transfer policy. I honestly think he has come to the realization that his buying of young, cheap, and inexperienced players isn’t working out.
Now let me explain my reasons for feeling this way and the first one is very simple, Arsene Wenger understands football and although he hates admitting any wrong doing anyone who has the football brain of Wenger has to recognize Arsenal’s frailties in defense and, more importantly, mental strength.
My next reason is the quality of players we have been linked with by the news outlets, players like Benzema, Higuain, Gary Cahill, Falcao, Vertonghen, Samba, Sakho, and so on. Now as we all know just because a club is rumored with a player it doesn’t mean that the club will sign him but it does usually mean that the club has some kind of interest in acquiring the player’s services.
My third reason is that Wenger has refused to rule out any moves for players. In multiple press conferences since the season came to a close reporters have thrown out all of the aforementioned names and Wenger hasn’t denied any reports of interest and Arsene is usually a real fan of rubbishing transfer rumors.
My final reason is Wenger’s attitude; he seems very upbeat for a man who just saw his club’s season implode in spectacular fashion.
He has that look that you get when you know you buy someone the perfect Christmas present and you can’t wait to give it to them.
Now I could be wrong of course, this could be another summer of Arsenal being rumoured with the world’s best footballers and Wenger not pulling the trigger and signing them but the way the off-season has started and the amount of money that has, reportedly, been offered by Arsenal for these players I think Gooners have a reason to be cautiously optimistic.

I agree that it seems that wenger intends to change a few ingredients now he has the money for it. We need more steel and more charism that’s for sure. But we don’t lack these ingredients that much. We don’t need revolution, we need evolution, and now we can afford it. Samba would be great, but I still was quiet impressed by koscielny. Parker would be good, and with the probable departure of both nasri and fabregas ramsey could find his place. I also would love to see benzema or falcao in our ranks to backup van persie but they won’t be easy to convince. Does anyone think it would be worth to make a bid for alexandre pato? This guy is a genius and he doesn’t play that much for milan despite his tremendous talent!
In arsene I trust!

To understand where one is going in life, you look to their past as an indication. Do people change? Of course but rarely does one go through wild 180 degree shifts. Same goes for the Boss. He’ll pick up a few up and coming young hopefuls and one (maybe 2) signees in the 10m range but no “mega signing” like Benzema. It’s just not him.

There are so many wrong conclusions I don’t even know where to start, but let’s see:
1) 99% of the time the transfers rumors are nothing more than rubbish. The press has to come up with news to make people pay attention and they create this absurd stories, like Higuain coming to Arsenal (or Benzema for than matter). Many times players agents want to test the waters and create rumors. Other times the press (specially the Spanish) creates rumors to destabilize a player within his club. In other words, to base any conclusions on transfer rumors is ridiculous.
2)Every season Wenger says he’s open to any transfers, including big names, but in the end he buys 1 or 2 cheap unknown players.
3) He has to maintain the image of being upbeat and keep saying they are very close to winning and just need to change minor things. What would you do in his place? Say: Yes I’ve been wrong, the team has no shot at any silverware and we have no money to spend in quality players?

Has anyone else heard the ribery rumour? Apparently ribery’s agent claims that he has been contacted as bayern have agreed a fee slightly above £20million . He claims that ribery wants to have a top earner clause in his contract and he is demanding £165 K a week but wenger has a wage cap of £125,000 .

Stan kroenke and usmanov wanting in on the directors board has a massive impact on how this summer will be very different, our tour through asia also means things have to be finalised before the holiday’s over.our transfer season will be either radically great or disastorous! all gooners are nervous and with good reason but i for one would like nothing more than to see wenger managing some big names in a team that has a great foundation. up gunners

@Max. You say ” I honestly think he has come to the realization that his buying of young, cheap, and inexperienced players isn’t working out.” Max, are you forgetting about Jon Toral Harper and Hector Bellerin(both 16) from Barcelona? and Carl Jenkinson from Charlton(19)?
Wenger will always buy youngsters with potential, as that is just what he does, and I dont think that is a bad thing to be honest. My problem with Wenger is when it comes to buying proven quality players, he has such a lazy, careless attitude, bordering on arrogance. And lets be honest, with his lack of achievements in the last 6 years, he has no reason at all to be arrogant.
I personally can’t see him signing the players we need, as teams want good money for their best players, so another season of disappointment awaits. Such a shame. No wonder Fabregas and Nasri want out of Arsenal.

At last some sense!! Arsenal have the best stadium in the premiership, the best British centre pairing in Wilshire and Ramsey, at least a third of the England team for the next 10 years will be Arsenal players… Wilshire (captain) Walcott, Gibbs and he will probably add Downing or Young too, we beat Barcelona at home this year and were a Bendtner kick away from knocking them out with ten men!!! Wenger WILL buy quality players this summer and who cares if Arshavin, Fabregas or Nasri leave (your talking about 80-90 million pounds coming back to Arsenal) none of those players are consistent and we WILL have a great squad next year. Arsenal are also the best placed premiership club to take advantage of the new UEFA rules on club funding coming soon. All these positives are ALL down to one man… Mr. Arsene Wenger so anyone who has forgotten what ‘boring boring Arsenal’ was like before the Frenchman came and says ‘he must go’ is quite simply… and idiot!

This is an extremely large pile of concentrated horse shit.
After hearing that Nasri is on his way out, Fabregas is as good as gone, Clichy looks set to leave and possibly Arshavin too… oh, and also Wengers admission that we will NOT be in the market for a top, top keeper….. Do you really think we will be going forwards next season? That’s not something to be optimistic about. I think we’re going backwards as I cannot see equal quality in numbers coming in to replace those who are choosing to leave…

Admin, it’s about time someone agreed completely with your excellent post. This Summer, for the first time for many a year, I’ve felt that Arsene has at last accepted the need to really strengthen the team and maybe change some of the past strategy.
By the close of the Window, I think he will surprise us all with the quality of new blood arriving at the Emirates, as well as some of the departures.
To those who have sent you disbelieving comments, I say
Wait and see, O Ye of Little Faith.

wenger needs to act now….before nasri gets the impression that the team is going nowhere.Wenger’s tactics are transparent…spread round the interest in players to force a lower price on the assumption that he can always buy player b instead of player A….In other words he dilutes his strength of interest deliberately. However the longer he dithers the closer nasri is to leaving….if that is the reason nasri wants out.
iTs speculation of course but it is a fact that wenger takes a very long time to fix a deal.I dont think wenger will buy top quality players. at high prices….he isn’t used to doing that…however he will improve the team in defense and attack im sure of that.

The season ticket renewal process will soon be over then wenger will announce that he can no longer hold back some of his youngsters. I reckon he will say that Vela deserves the chance provided by bendtner leaving. Frimpong will get the chance to replace denilson. Botelho will get the chance to replace nasri. Ramsey is like a new signing and ready to step into cescs place. Bartley will provide yhete height we need alongside vermaelen is also like a new signing. Almunia will be replaced in the squad by the returning mannone. Clichy has gone bit traore will push gibbs all the way. Finally eboue we have replaced him with jenkinson and coquelin and eastmond will provide extra cover at right back and dm. But we now have about £100m to spend in January if we need it but i must give these youngsters their chance i owe them that much.

I totally agree with this article. All of you who slate arsene wenger like you do have absolutley NO real knowledge of the beautiful game. What wenger has acheived on the money he has spent could not be matched by anyone, is it any wonder real madrid wanted him over mourinho!? they know that arsenal play total football bettered only by barca! so if they gave him 100 million imagine what he could do. not only this Arsenal are financially sound, Man U and Barca are in a shit load of debt!!( plus money has only been available for 1 year from usmanov, and you cant blame wenger for having faith in a team capable of beating barca) Wenger to me looks like a man who has realised he has done what he can with the money he spends and wants to enjoy winning again and to silence the hateful english media. honestly i cant believe some of you so called fans, you accuse our players of not loving our club, but do you? I know wenger does, and despite is stubborn streak and his over faith on young players, he DOES NOT deserve the stick some of you spuds in desguise give him. LOVE GUNS

It seems extremely likely that Eboue / Bendtner / Denilson / Clichy / Almunia, will be packing their bags – maybe Arshavin / Rosicky / Diaby as well? at a conservative guess Arsenal should be able to get £30m-£50m to add to anything already in the war chest. Once you take out wage rises… Wenger will probably still be left with £50m – £70m. If all those go there are players waiting to step up in to the squad, Lansbury / Miquel / Miyiachi (work permit permitting) / Martinez (just called up to the Argentine squad)….. so there is no justifiable reason to believe Wenger couldn’t spend all that on just 3/4 individuals – and, god forbid, if cesc goes then Arsenal will be practically rolling in money!

we all know Arsene won’t surprise us, it’s just gna be another Transfer Window of disappointment, we might sign a couple of youngsters, or a nonsense player like Squillaci
Arsene has lost his touch, since all our experienced players started leaving, he has started to enhance his idea of player growth.
Arsene should stop being silly and sell that Rubbish excuse of a ‘Captain’ Cesc Fabregas. you wouldnt see Gerrard making hints that he wants to leave, Gerrard is a proper Captain, we need a player like him, someone with a winning mentality that has stopped us from winning anything.
Arsenal and Barcelona play very similar football, but Arsenal dont hvae a winning mentality as Barca do, also Barcelona actually tend to shoot, not try to walk the ball in
Im extremely disappointed in Nasri, he wants a superstar wage, but he hasnt proved that he deserves it yet? look at Xavi, Iniesta they deserve the wages but when do we ever hear any Barca player ask for a massive pay rise or threaten not to sign a contract because of it,
Now im not saying Barcelona are a perfect team, whenever someone ‘fouls’ them they all crowd the ref asking for a card, i mean come on, just shut up and play football?
Top 5 people Arsenal should sign
Steklenburg
Adel Taraabt
Ramadel Falcao
Chris Samba
Gary Cahill

I agree, wenger has already come out and said that this has been his most frustrating season and this is because we were so close, and the potential was finally going to come through. He has been let down by a lot of players this year who were maybe not as good as he had thought, and the players are at the age now were potential is no more, so there will be many big signings this summer, you will see ;}

wow i can’t believe everyone has lost hope in Mr. W, he’s gonna change it up you know. Anyway sucks we haven’t won anything in a long time. The worst is that Nasri want’s to leave… bummer. I for one am content that we are still better than spurs… we just had bad luck that’s mostly it i think. If Benturd is replaced with some one good i think next season will be much better but only if Vermaelen returns to fitness and we add a cb and an improvement for Denilson then i think we might just be able to actually pose a threat not just in the league but in all tournaments. I guess it all depends on who the prof decides to spend his savings on, regardless i think he has done alot for the Arsenal… RVP, Fabregas, Nasri(if he stays), Wilshire, Song, Walcott etc are all signings that Wenger completed. Give the man the respect he deserves i say.

Being an Arsenal supporter doesn’t mean we have to support every individual or decision that happens within the organization you simpleton!
You say let’s look at what he has done? Mmmm yes let’s shall we.
He has done f**k all in the last 6 years, won absolutely bugger all, has sold countless proven, effective world class players because they were on the wrong side of 30, refused to spend any significant money to bring top players to the club, not addressed our woeful lack of defending against set pieces, that year after year provide the oppositions a slew of goals, continued to sign “starlets” who have yet to prove themselves and when do are sold on to the real BIG clubs to make profits for the board of directors, he has refused to change a philosophy that has shown to not work…. Do I need to go on???
How many more years are you AKB twats willing to give him? Seriously. Yes he had some very successful years at Arsenal, but unfortunately they now were almost a decade ago!!!
Time for twats like you to wake up and smell the coffee, time for Wenger to change or leave. Time for us “fake” arsenal fans according to twats like you Bobby, to be heard and nit let the likes of you shout us down.

Non of them have played anywhere the level of champions league football and if they we of a level arsenal need to be signing then why aren’t Chelsea man u or barca looking at them? To win trophies you MUST compete with these clubs!

First and foremsot the transfer window has opened and there has been no signings whatsoever from any clubs(big ones), so atypical of Arsene Wenger, if at all a singing does happen it will be in the end of the window, maybe even the last day last hour.
I for one dont care who we buy or dont, i would want the dead wood cleared first, which means effectively have denilson, diaby, bendtner, eboue, almunia leave. Then if he is a goner so he be i mean cesc, nasri well if its only about money then i think he will stay but i feel there is more to it than we can see, clichy, rozza, arshavin can leave as well for i dont see them contributing significantly anymore to the club.
If we do clearout then we should buy quality replacements,if he cant get Baines, play Vermaelen as left back have kos/cahill or vertoghen centre, buy a holding midfielder for sure as song aint as good as he is made out to be, we will not buy a GK for sure, so invest in a striker, not gervinho, someone more proven like huntelaar. Arsenal need to understand that the excuses have all dried up and if we dont walk the talk then we will become the laughing stock all around.

@nicky…we’ve waited for years, and things haven’t changed. I really want things to change for the better, but i don’t see Wenger doing it. This is not a matter of “little faith” as you said. It’s a matter of action on Wenger’s part. We’re still having problems keeping our good players…talk less of signing good ones to strengthen our team.
if two of our good players leave, and we sign two more, then we’ve really not achieved anything. we’re right were we ended last season (if not behind).
Point of Reflection for all Gunners…If Wenger can sell a Player for 50Million, he should be willing to buy a player for 50Million…and not criticise those who do.

I think that there are more problems than reported with the club, behind closed doors there must be something that is influencing the way in which the squad is reacting since the end of yet another trophyless season at Arsenal and the transfer window opening, it seems that harmony within the squad is at an all time low with the ammount of players wanting to leave the club, the tension on the board between stan kroenke and asimov has alot to do with it and should be sorted out without affecting the team! dont get me wrong here, change is needed and would be welcomed, for example, with Bendtner and Denilson looking to leave it is understandable as they never play in competitive matches and the squad would be better off without them, bring some replacements in who actually want to fight for a place in a great team like Arsenal, rather than whinging and claiming how fantastic they are! (Bendtner has a very over rated view of himself and thinks that he is on the same level of Henry or messi – wake up mate!) WE Need a squad that will give eachother a bit of competition for their place, this would raise our game and get rid of the complacency that Arsenal seem to get mid way through every single season. Onto Fabregas – he should be allowed to leave, he is a fantastic player and i really like him, but you can tell how unhappy he is as its reflected in his performances this season, look at how he has played this year and compare it to before Bastardlona started thier bs, cash in now and invest it back into the team. The Nasri situation should be resolved asap, with fabregas gone I believe he will step up another gear this year, he has the potential to develop into a key player. We need to bring in (transfer funds will be high enough with the sale of fabregas and others) :
OUT -
Almunia
Lehman
Denilson
Bendtner
Fabregas
Rosiky
Arshavin
IN
GK – EITHER : AKINFEEV, LLORIS, BENAGLIO
DEFENCE – EITHER OR BOTH : SAKHO (PSG) / SHAWCROSS (STOKE)
DEFENSIVE MID – EITHER : RODWELL (EVERTON) / ARTURO VIDAL (BAYER LEVERKUSAN) / VELOSO (GENOA)
ATT MID – EITHER or Both : HAZARD (LILLE) HAMSIK (Napoli)
STRIKERS – any of these TO PARTNER RVP – BENZEMA, FALCOA, HIGUAN, NEYMAR, LUKAKU, CASSANO, CAVANI.
There are so many quality players out there I could keep listing players who I would like to see come to arsenal,, fabregas will sell for around the 45m mark and wenger has been told he has a 50m transfer fund to spend, add the sale of bendtner and denilson and its a healthy budget, but alas I have a feeling that wenger will not change his strategy in the transfer market, and we will see yet more signings like the 2 we have made already in this transfer window from barcelona youth who wont be able to make a contribution for another 3/4 years minimum, and then will demand a move back to spain, its a very fustrating time for gunners fans because there wont be any big signings! In Arsene we trust ? personally I do and would hate to see him leave, who would honestly be able to come in and replace him??? something has got to give, if you had told the gunners fans that after the invincibles we would go 6 years without a trophy we would of all laughed and said dont be silly!

Since it is the end of the worst season in the recent times, it has to be a good transfer window. Otherwise how could we feel the intent. If after all these we end up buying some cheap young players only , I’m bound to say we won’t play UCL from next to coming season. I can’t believe a team like Arsenal’s stature securing 12 points from the last 11 matches of league. May be there are some talented players in the squad but I must admit there are a lot of weaknesses and many places to improve. Although we were very near, I didn’t demand a trophy last season at the same time I didn’t expect us to perform that awfully. Even to a dumb like me it’s clear that we have a pathetic defence. So the footballing brains linked to the welfare of Arsenal if agree with me would take necessary steps. It is expected.

There is no point signing a single player, even if nasri bendner and francesc i soler fabregas all leave. Why is this?
This is because arsenal concede too many goals! Signing five new players who are strikers and midfielders will change a little, but not as much as signing one defender who is in the top three in the world! Sol campbell, tony adams, David Seaman/jens lehman, have not been replaced. In fact their is not a single english defensive player as good as them apart from maybe ledley king. Foreign players of thier quality that I know are maybe Lucio, Chiellini, julio cesar? Buffon, stekelenberg, (jens lehman has a lot to live up to, if he can play as well as he did in the lead up to arsenal getting to the champions league final then maybe him) Arsenal need truly only one signing! And that is a Defender who is in the top two or three in the world!!!! Wenger could marry lionel(leonel) Andre Messi off to one of his family members convince him to sign for arsenal, get messi to score fourty goals in the premier league ten or fifteen in the champions league, and they still would not bloody win anything because they would concede too many goals. And that is that. All other talk is just hopes and speculation that has not been thought through properly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you know what separates Arsenal from every other club in England? Class! Classy players, classy style of playing, classy stadium, classy way of doing business! Most Arsenal fans are classy too! So people who profess to be fans but cant write two words without saying f*** or t*** or c*** are not fit to be called Gooners! Go and wash your mouth out with soap, see a doctor about your problem, have a bath and a haircut and we might just let you represent Arsenal again!
Morons!

I disagree with you, wenger is not buying any player for nxt season,do you know the reason? Because the board is happy & contented with the money he saves & makes for them, that it.
