Max: Wenger must force Fabregas situation to Arsenal’s advantage
A Solution to the Nasri, Cesc, Clichy Situation by Max Baker
We were all shocked and most of us became instantly infuriated with yesterday’s news that Gael Clichy was closing in on a move to Manchester City and that Samir Nasri may soon join him in Manchester.
Pair this information with the constant reports of Cesc Fabregas leaving to join Barcelona and it’s safe to say that yesterday could have gone better. However, there is a way Arsenal can handle this situation but it is kind of underhanded and Arsene Wenger usually isn’t a fan of aggressive transfer tactics and hurting feelings but here is the best way for Arsenal to handle it.
First off you would call Cesc Fabregas into Ivan Gazidis’ office and say, “Listen Cesc, the club is selling you to the highest bidder outside the Premier League. If you choose to block the move to the highest bidder outside the Premier League you will sit on our bench until your contract runs out.” The second you tell Fabregas this he will give in and accept a move anywhere, as no professional footballer wants to sit on the bench, and in the process you have started a massive bidding war between the entire world’s richest clubs. Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and maybe even Bayern Munich are all throwing their hats into the ring to sign one of the planet’s best players and his transfer fee easily goes higher than £50 million. You take the money you get from Cesc’s sale and buy two or perhaps three world class players.
As for Clichy and Nasri the situation is a bit different because they each only have one year remaining and they may actually choose the sit on the bench option if they really want to go to Manchester City so I think the best option is to go ahead and sell Clichy wherever he wants because he was a bit of a defensive liability and I would happily take the £7 million offered by City or try to get a bench player in exchange for him. Nasri, on the other hand, I would give into his contract demands because I honestly think losing him would be a bit of a disaster and losing him to a club that finished higher than us a season ago would be an even bigger disaster.
What do you think of the transfer sagas of Fabregas, Nasri, and Clichy? Let us know in the comments section and on Twitter @MaxBakerDFW and @justarsenal

agreed, letting nasri go to man u, would be next to impossible.if it did happen, moreover at 20millions, wenger would be proved to be totally inferior to alex ferguson in terms of bargaining and having a vision.

I think they will all leave and Arsenal will still remain Arsenal.
Arsenal have lost better players before anyway.
I think instead of wasting time on want-aways, Wenger MUST concentrate on bringing in other players.
Daniel De Rossi, Arturo Vidal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aly Cissokho, Jan Vertoghen, Christopher Samba, Gary Cahill, Riccardo Alvarez, Miguel Veloso, Hulk, Karim Benzema, Gervinho, Sebastian Giovinco, Axel Witsel, Leighton Baines e.t.c are all players who can be brought in.
Take your pick, like me I pick Daniel De Rossi, Arturo Vidal, Aly Cissokho, Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and you will see we don’t have to fear loosing Nasri, Fabregas and Clichy, they are great players, but they are not the only ones.
All that is required is a slight adjustment (not overhaul) to the restrictive wage policy to accomodate star players and we are back in contention for everything.

Fabregas,Nasri and Clichy are goner`s (not Gooners) that I accept, but what gives me the s**ts most is Denilson is to stay and no one is exactly clamering for Bendtner, Scallaci or Almunia either. Even if we were prepared to give them away to make room for others who could afford their wages. The morale among Arsenal supporters is at the lowest I`ve known in over sixty years, something`s got to give.

@safie we can’t sell nasri to buy hazard. Nasri should be given what he wants wenger should not be stingy. Wilshire and nasri were the only players during the away game with barca had ignition to the squad which plaid like a second division team. So nasri must stay!!

Well i dont think nasri, fabregas and clichy could stay under wenger any more cause a trophyless seasson for a world class players are not easy. if wenger can not sign experienced players to the club then he should allow them go to were they might win trophy

I love the idea with cesc. Mentally he was gone last season. His assist for barca in the second leg showed it. Cash in on him, hopefully to Madrid just to spite barca. Nasri needs to stay and would trive in the spot vacated by cesc. Clichy can go and it would be great if he went to one of our rivals. He was exposed again and again last season, so why not let Theo burn him for 180 minutes next season? Use the money from cesc to buy some proven players and solidify the back line/get some attacking reinforcements.
I’m annoyed by the idea that we could be stuck with the B52 bomb and the most boring Brazilian footballer I’ve ever seen.

I was not shocked at all. Clichy moving to city is very welcome because we are offloading an erratic LB,consistently inconsistent for the last 2 seasons. We only have to hope that wenger buys Enrique who I guess is also in his last year of contract or just hope Gibbs comes good.
As Lee Dixon said if anybody is not proud of wearing the cannon he should fuck off to wherever he wants.I think this was aimed at Fabregas and nasri and you have to say that he was spot on.
Fabregas leaving would be fantastic for us for 3 reasons, (but I am sure that he would regret that when he sits on the bench for more than half of the next season)
1. Good money for Arsenal – 35 to 40m – which could be effectively used to rebuild ( if at all we are going to do it )
2. We could have a new captain who can inspire his team and who wants to play for Arsenal, my preference like many would be TV.
3. He was often injured the last 2 seasons with his hamstrings going haywire every now and then. We could buy a new fit replacement.
As for Nasri he can fuck off, he had 6 months of good football thats it. All of you fellow gooners just think for a second, should we go the Leeds way ?.
I for one would be terribly disappointed if the club gives what he wants because he has committed an unpardonable crime of talking about a move to Manure, he betrayed wenger who brought him to this level,he is holding Arsenal to ransom.
This club will survive no matter who stays or leaves, of that I have no doubt

I say, sell Fabregas, use his wages to better the contracts of Clichy and Nasri and keep them.

You can’t make somebody with the talent of cesc to sit on bench there is no decision more stupid than that. I think you have to explain it to him in a proper way so that he can understand that he could not bring loss to Arsenal by his desire to move to Barca.
Sell clichy to anybody
Someone give a blow to Nasri’s head so that his mind comes back to normal

With all due respect i strongly disagree with you since we can’t just tell fabregas that we gonna bench him if he doesn’t go where we want.Honestly everybody knows that player of fabregas quality cannot be benched unless if you are Barca.Further we are paying him some 110k per week so even fabregas know this won’t be possible especially under AW.So the best possible scenario for us is to cash in for fabregas around 35M.suppose if we bench him as you said for one whole season then probably his market worth only goes down further So it is disastrous for us to bench him where we would lose serious money.I think the cesc himself created this situation that we can’t sell him to the highest bidder by saying he only wants to go to Barca .So we have to accept whatever offer around 35M from you know who .

Hypothetically your article appears great and this would be fantastic if we could start a bidding war for Fabregas.
Realistically, no one would bench a $50M player to make a point. It’s like having money lying around the house when it should be invested or banked. Regardless of the highest bidder, Fab still has to agree with the move. This would obviously put a complete block on his transfer other than a Barca move. When you think about it, why would we want to keep a player (captain) around if he is unhappy and doesn’t give his all?
Time to say thanks Fab for the years, but to be Captain of Arsenal, your heart has to be with the Gunners all the way!
v.Persie to be Captain next year!!!! A TRUE GUNNER!

Some good ideas mate.
I think the threat to Fabregas of the bench next year would be a little too transparent. I don’t think theirs any team who would place a full season with a talent as great as Cesc sitting there dormant.
If Cesc owes as much to Arsenal as he continues to reiterate then a simple ‘If you want to go, at least make sure we benefit as well’ and I’m sure the final sum will be more than acceptable!
As for Clichy, he can go in my opinion, far too many little mistakes that’s cost us over the past few years. He had all the potential of filling the gaping hole left by the Cole transfer but never quiet reached the heights expected.
We now have Gibbs shining and if City want to splash then I say accept what we can or even as you said steal one of their substitute players and let Mr Wenger work his magic.
Finally Nasri, you are 10000% spot on. Arsenal must quite simply do everything they can to keep this player. He has been a great asset to Arsenal since he signed and has proved he can mix it with the big boys in the premier league.
As always.. Us gooners will have to sit and wait, cringing at the back of the tabloids, and watch everything unfold around us!
Fingers crossed not ay!

i support what u posted but as for me this is not we suppose to be hearing now, starting from the opening of the transfer clubs have been buying players not selling especially in big clubs let’s look at the likes of barcelona, man utd, chelsea, man city and real madrid. These clubs have been buying not selling,we don’t know our problem, our only problem is selling our players when they are ripe to give us trophy, let’s look into 2007/2008 season where we have perform very well before bowing in the last minute then,we still have players like adebayor, hleb, toure, flamini and so on to mention few but after that season we sold all of them this is the problem arsenal are facing now and they must solve it before we win any honour.Thanks.

I really doubt there is somebody who will take out Nasri for 20 million considering he just has only one year to run through. If somebody is saying that Alex Ferguson or Mancini is gonna pay that much money then they must be in some goddamn lunatic asylum.
I also really doubt that there’s gonna be much offers for Cesc Fabreagas outside Barca. Its plain n simple. Only Premier League clubs would offer this big money and I doubt that Fabregas would love to play in Britain. His heart is to move back to his home and why would he accept?
He might even play on the field but what if he is not cooperating. What if he is not playing to his potential?
Come on its so easy to sit in some junk room and type out some gibberish. Just Arsenal rather can change its name to Just Gibberish. Sounds perfect.

I don’t see why we should even think bout selling cesc and consider keeping rebel samir!! Cesc on his part has never come out to demand for wage increament or put in for transfer request, its never his fault that barca wants him in there squad.
To me samir is my arsenal worst player cuz he’s been in arsenal for 3seasons or there about and i can’t seem to recal seeing him having a full blast season. as far as i can recall, last season was his best season and he couldnt go a whole season on form. We can get several nasir in the market while is a one in a million player in the world.

If players want to leave arsenal let them go. Nasri is proving that he is not loyal so let him go and 2 years down the line he will be a Hleb. It took him 3 season to play well at arsenal and I dont think Fergie or mancini will be patient with him so that he can adapt to their style of play in 3 seasons after splashing such cash. look at Flamini, Hleb, Adebayor they were starting 11 players at arsenal but now they are ordinary squad players.

No player is bigger than arsenal but obviously CESC is arsenal’s most priced asset and presently the best player in the squad followed only by V.P….. Samir a normal player and his best possition presently in the squad is on the wings, I rate ramsey ahead of him in the CM or AM role. He should go to hell as long as i care.

@FREDDY KOIGI you would sign midfielders n strikers? glad your not the manager!
Strong arming players will not work, Fabregas has done well at arsenal, let him move to Barca for 40M and use that cash to spend on quality wingers like Matta or Hazard. Keep Nasri at all costs! he is dangerous down the middle. Keep Rosicky and Diaby as well.
We need to sign Cahill AND Samba as well as Benzema (if possible) Bains, Diarra, Alverez, Oxlade and a quality keeper. Get rid of Arshavin, Bendtner, Vela, Denilson, Squilachi and Almunia. Loan out Koscielny

I agree with what you said. My only point of difference is that I would even sell Fabragas to Man City if they paid the highest amount. If we buy two or three world class players with the money we will only be stronger. We should know how to neutralize him if he came against us in a game.

Even if Cesc stays. Let him be stripped of captaincy. Give it to RVP or Alex Song.
The Nasri matter is not as simple as many of you think. By giving in to his demands, arsenal will be setting a precedent and we’ll have to deal with whiners season in season out. Secondly and most importantly, even if his demands are met and we fail to retain Cescy, its still a situation since he’s also unhappy with the way the club keeps on losing world-class players. Add clichys probable departure and you agree, the club could be headed for disaster. With the departure of Fab, Nana, Clichy and (caugh) Bendtner and his adoring papa, its a dire situation for our team. The remaining players will be demoralized. Throw in a possible 6 new entrants into the first team and the confusion is complete. These guys need to settle, they need to learn not only the English game, but also our artistic style of play.
I say, Sell Fab to Mourinho. He’d pay anything to f–k the fattened pride of these foolish Catalonians flaccid.
Give Nasri what he is worth and brave the consequences of this precedent.
Sell Clichy and trust Gibbs. Recall Traore to bolster that area.
Kolscieny is not as bad as he has been made to look. None the less, he should deputize the Vermanator with Samba and Djourou alongside.
Bring in another serious guy to deputize Sagna but keep Eboue. His ineptness notwithstanding, this guy’s got gun powder flowing in his veins.
Trust Szeszsny (whatever the spelling)to be deputized by Fabiansky. Recall Manonne just in case there is a Crisis mid-season.
I rest my mumbling!

I think Wenger decision to keep quite and look for experience players to compliment the team is a wellcome move, keeping players who have suggested their alternative move to other teams would be costly to the team, Fabregas heart is not with arsenal now, we even saw this in the last 9 games he played let him go, Clichy is easily replaceable, convince Nasri to stay but if he insist let him go, arsenal has survived many storms and I believe we can still cope so long as we buy 3 additional experience players, one in the mid field, backline and striking.

Please……stop saying Arsenal should do ‘everything’ possible to keep Nasri. Have we forgotten Hleb so fast. I used to admire this guy then, he was even more consistent more than Nasir………a silly decision, he found himself where he is today. I don’t condone quality players leaving Arsenal but when a player is not totally commited to Arsenal the best thind is to let him go and trust me Arsenal will survive

First lets talk about transfer exit, like most people say, Clichy for 7m is a reasonable price, I am sure Wenger will have a wealth of target for his replacement, there are even Gibbs and Traore on the line, who are also exciting to see. Nasri on the other hand, really he had only played 6 months of high, star quality football and did not even step up in big matches or when Arsenal needed him the most. His loyalty is also a big problem at this stage, after 4 or 5 years, it turns out he is just another Flamini, Hleb. Looks what they all turned out to be after leaving Arsenal, substitution fringe player. Finally Fabregas, I believe once Nasri set to depart, he will soon follows. Fabregas isn’t as important as before for Arsenal. His performance is never at his best last season (perhaps due to injuries), the only thing I remember for him last year, is the give away to Barcelona, which in turn lead us to an exit for the Champions league. I am sure if price is right there are no ways we are not selling him.
Now the problem is what we do with the money. In real business world where Arsenal is in, unlike other clubs, I believe only about 70%-80% of those revenue will be re-invested to fund player. After all, business is a business, Wenger will try his best to accommodate the shareholders with profit each year. So be reasonable and think Wenger as a business man instead of a football manager. I guess for replacement don’t expect too much of big signing because technical wise I really don’t believe Arsenal will be affected heavily, although mentally it would. The key here is how to regenerate the moral lost due to the lost of Key players and how the new players will fit in.
My views on the new transfers:
Some “targets” I believe is over price:
Hazard for 20m, think carefully for his style of play, does it really fit in Arsenal. Despite the media quote him as C7 or messi, I think he is still far from that level.
Cahill for 19m, Wenger will never pay such a price for a defender same for Samba, 13m, unless there is a better price or else a player who had played for a non-league team before isn’t really worth that much.
More reasonable targets are:
Mata reported for around 12-15m, a reasonable price for a world class player.
Alvarez, Gervinho, around 12m.
I believe we should expect that 15-17m is Wenger’s maximum for a player

Sadly the bidding war over cesc will not happen as everyone knows he will only leave arsenal for barca and barca is taking advantage on that.
As for nasri I won’t be surprise seeing him go as we know wenger hes probably looking at jack and rambo to step up and take over. Evidently or coincidentally with the links of player the past weeks.

As much as I would love to see Barcelona spited with Fabregas going to madrid or elsewhere outside the premiership, it just wont happen, The Barcelona Players and Fabregas have planned this charade since the world cup, do you honestly think that international team mates dont phone eachother and tap up players on behalf of thier club, business at Barcelona is conducted in a way that should be investigated by eufa, Its an absolute disgrace, None the less, We should Put him up for an open transfer and welcome bids from any teams, this would show his real worth and discredit barcelonas valuation of him. Sitting him on the bench would be wrong on so many levels, in my opinion he should be stripped of the Captaincy NOW! and given to
R V P, He shows in every game a true passion, he does get a little fiery at times but this is what we need, A true Gunner at heart in charge on the field!
Clichy – Sell him now, there are plenty more pacy left backs who can do the same job and maybe block a few more of those crosses which seem to get us scored on in important games!
Nasri – Granted, a very gifted player but too use Manuer as leverage in holding the club to ransom is in my eyes an Unforgivable betrayal to all of the team and staff at arsenal, Now its coming to light that he may be joining City, but not for the money, Yeah right! He should also be put up for transfer immediately and hopefully there may be a couple of teams who will start a little bit of a bidding war if they want him, regardless of how long is left on his contract, I guarantee that arsenal would recieve more if they used this strategy!

Let Clichy go, try to keep Nasri and Fabrigas. But if they want to go let dem go at a sum not less than 55M.
Arsenal’s problem has been defensive otherwise it has da best midfield in England. Jack and Ramsey are briliant and exelent. They proved it against Man u.
Wether the duo are leaving or not, let Wenger get Samba and Cahill at all cost and atleast one sharp striker and a strong defensive midfielder. Stars from France has proved to be slow to adapt to Arsenal’s style of foot ball ( Chamakh, Squilancy, Nasri) let buy from elsewhere. Vela has potentials let him be loaned but not sold. Squilancy, Denilson, Bentner and Ebue should go for a sum of at least 35M. It’s business.

Hi , this is my take on the problem.
Firstly to leave a talent as big as Fabregas on the bench while his contract runs down would be madness , and would not send a very good message to the other players. You can understand why Arsenal are unwilling to sell Fabregas , they have invested a lot of time and effort to help make Fabregas the player he is and they are probably not ready to cash in on that yet , especially as there has not been a major trophy in recent years , and the belief is that with Fabregas at the helm we can achieve it in the end. Also selling fabregas would not send a very good message to the other players , especially those with offers on the table from other clubs , the sale could cause a mass exodus , and there are plenty of players in the squad who would interest big european clubs. It would not send a very good message to fans either. Also i think that there may be a little animosity towards Barcelona involved. If you consider in recent years we have lost quite a few players to them (Overmars , Petite , Hleb , Henry ,Silvinho , Van bronkhorst ) , players that Wenger did not want to sell really. We have lost our only Champions League final to them when we really didnt deserve to , and they knocked us out of last seasons competition , you can understand why they would not want to sell to Barcelona , some people say that the 2 sides are the best 2 footballing sides in Europe , why add to them ? , and the kind of tactics they use in the transfer market sometimes are the opposite of everything Wenger supports , i think that is part of the reason he has never said yes to managing Real Madrid despite several chances , its principle. Having said all that how far do you let it go , it will end up becoming the Henry saga all over again , everytime there is a transfer window the rumours start and Barcelona are banging at the door again , it is disruptive for the team , plus however many times Fabregas says he will give 100% for arsenal he will get frustrated in the end. At the end of the day if his heart is with Barca then we should let him go there. Barca are sure to pay between 30 and 40 million for him , that plus the possible sales of players like Bendtner and Clichy should give Wenger a nice kitty to go out and get players to improve the squad , and if decent players come in then that should persuade others to stay. The only problem for Wenger i think would be to find a new captain , everybody says Van Persie but his temperament can be an issue sometimes.
From the point of view of the player i think Barca would be a bad move for fabregas , as good a player as he is , when you look at his Spain place he is mostly on the bench , and comes on to make an impact. The attacking midfield places are taken up by the likes of Xavi , Iniesta , Busquets , Villa etc , all players he would have to compete with at Barca , and thats without taking into account Kieta , Messi , Masherano , Bojan etc , and Barca are a winning formula so why would Gaurdiola change that , i can see Fabregas being a bench player at Barca too.

i think selling fabregas when xavi is still available is stupid, plus fabregas will get better, he is just 24.
We should hold him 2 more years, and then barcelona would be fricking nuts for sign him. And Real Madrid would also be really interested. And we would be talking of something about 70-80 mill. So we should just offer something better to him and retain him 2 more years. Besides in 2 years wilshere and ramsey would be ready to take over.

I think than wenger should sell Fabregas for £40m to Barca and Clichy to City for £7m with that money buy Juan Mata for £23m and Eden Hazard for £20. Use money from Fab and Clichy to buy defenders as we are alread getting Cahill, Baines and Samba aswell as Ricardo Alvarez and Gervinho and all that is left is to keep nasri and buy a decent keeper but if not we need to have faith in Szczesny.
IF we get the players i said this is the team we should have faith in Szezesny.

Fabregas still has 4 YEARS on his contract! And when he is fit he is one of the world’s best midfielders. He is also one of the youngest of the world’s great midfielders! If Torres is worth 50m (and he’s hardly been prolific), then how on earth can Cesc be worth less?!
£35m + Alcantara (or some other top-class young benchwarmer) would maybe be worth considering, but I’d be perfectly happy to see Cesc stay (and play) for two or three more years before being sold (in his prime) for £50-£60m.
Xavi and Iniesta will retire eventually and Barca will still want Cesc in 2 years time. Lets wait for them to pay what Cesc is worth!

There is a reason why we made him the highest paid player and gave him the longest contract at Arsenal – it wasn’t because we wanted to sell him to Barca on the cheap!
