Mertesacker has confidence in Arsenal’s quality new signings
Mertesacker Believes by AH
Per Mertesacker today told Arsenal.com about his confidence in the side. We saw summer signing Oliver Giroud also speak out earlier about the team and their confidence about winning trophies, and of course Wojciech Szczesny always has a ring of confidence around him.
“I think we have a better situation than last year,” Mertesacker told Arsenal Player. “The team is full of characters, good players and every position has competition. So I am looking forward to the season because I think we can show the potential we have in a better way than last year.
“We need good signings and I feel that these players will help us a lot. Giroud is a good striker and I have seen a lot of him in training because he was not out in Asia, so we trained a lot together. He made a good effort and hopefully in the games he will show that as well.”
“Santi Cazorla has just signed so we will see him in training and in games in the short term.”
The Germany international is also pleased to see his fellow countryman Lukas Podolski settling down quickly and thinks he will soon be ready to fit into London life as well as become an integral part of the team. “I try to do my very best to help him settle,” said Per. “I had the same thing last year and it is good to have a lot of help in your first moments in a new city with a new language. It is good to have some German friends around you.
“But the Club is doing well also. You have a lot of people who have been very helpful from the beginning. Everything is going fine for him and I am very happy that he is here to give his best for Arsenal.
“From the beginning he was confident about speaking English. He is a confident guy with more than 100 caps for Germany, so he has massive experience. For us to have him here is a massive impact.”
Fan’s opinions were mixed on Mertesacker last season, especially when he first played for the team, but his contributions to some games were still key, which allowed us to finish where we did. Some slaughter him and say “hes a terrible defender” but without him theres a chance we may not have got some the points that we did out of games.
As Mertesacker suggested competition for starting XI places is key. Not only will it help with experience and help the players work hard for their spot, but will also allow us to have more options when the inevitable injures occur.
I’m glad to hear that some of the players have belief in winning some silverware and hopefully that belief will be spread across the team, so the individual talents join together as a team, and play as a team, which will finally lead to some success come May next year.
Come On You Gooners!

mertesacker is a great defender, he uses his head, thinking wise.
I dont think we need another CB with also eastmond and bartley we will have another 2 options.
Remember Wenger said he would maybe complete 1 or 2 signings.
So there is a big chance there will be another player coming to the emirates.
I hope M vila / Sahin / Niang
we will see…

The signings this year and last year are all experienced players, its been a long time since we’ve had this much experience in the side at 1 time, I think we will see a mentally strong Arsenal next season, a team that will be better equipt to cross the finish line.

Cldnt have put it better myself geeza. With the players we’ve bought in the last 2 windows we’ve added wots been missing, and hopefully this year our squad depth wont be our failing. Or our defence if Mr Bould had anything to do with it!
I want Bould to get Wenger to re-instate the old highbury corner routine:
The near post flick on. Bould did it for years and allowed others to score plenty of goals&with the number of corners we get we’d be laughing.
Just over 3 weeks of the transfer window left, many moves still to happen. Hold on tight its gona be a wild ride.

Bfg is a great defender. because he is slow the media target him and make it sound like he is terrible. he has put an end to the stoke tactic of launch it into the box. i no longer worry when teams use that tactic. thanks per

he’s a classy defender…not like a modern day defender
he likes to sit back n read the game….make interceptions
we’ll surely see better of him this season
n
as vermalean leaves his position quite often n moves forward
koscienly is also similar to vermalean,he moves forward too…but not as vermalean….vermalean behaves as if he’s a playmaker or a forward….
so mertesacker is needed….coz he is positional disciplined….
n so is arteta who covers song n vermalean both….when they move forward…..
we need a defensive midfielder….who can do this….a young dm

Good to hear players sounding positivie about the team. Apparently Metresaker played a big part in signing Prince Podolski so he’s proving his worth off the pitch too.
When he does get a game though, let’s hope he uses his head a bit more on the pitch this time round.

If we get sahin we will have:
Wilshere, Song, Arteta, Rosicky, Cazorla, Ramsey, Sahin, Diaby all fighting for a spot next season.
For attack (center striker):
Giroud, Podolski, RVP?, Chamakh (good 3/4 striker as we only play 1 striker in our formation).
Wingers:
Walcott, Gervinho, Chamberlain, Podolski, Cazorla
Defence:
Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Djourou, Mertesacker, Gibbs, Santos, Jenkinson
If that isnt depth, i dont know what is. 8 class midfielders fighting for 3 places. 3 great strikers (and chamakh) fighting for the striker position. 5 great players on the wings. And a solid defence. Looking good next season

mertesacker joined when the club was in a sorry state.except for some 3 mistakes,he did a brilliant job.arteta had said ppl will see more of him once he settles.we all know how classy he was and even scored some gr8 goals.same thing per said and dont be surprised if u see his quality this season.are ppl so inhumane to expect every player to be perfect (like a robot) in their play ? Guess even vermaelen was absent at d time of his joining.
For those he dont know,he was 1st choice for germany until his injury.he was part of the world cup squad where germany lost to spain(team with lots of fast technical players and he coped) from a goal conceded in corner.
@amol,very well said.mertesacker is an important player esp against teams like stoke.

One more defensive player as DM or CD will be enough for us to challenge Citeh and M.U. Wenger just go and buy one and the jigsaw complete. If need be an English type of player. Go Gunners !!!!!!!!!!!

Merts will only play league cup games. The man is slower than a game of women’s cricket. I like him for his experience and cautious play, but is it really hard to pass the ball back to your keeper constantly? Per needs more aggression if he’s going to trouble other strikers. He’s susceptible to getting physically bullied and this shits me that some people can be a total waste of height and physical gift. Being a nice guy gets you nowhere in sports. You have to have that confidence and determination to fight for the ball, with the will to win it. I guess people are born with different talents, but do we not ask ourselves why Ibrahimovic (whos the same height as Merts)is a lot more aggressive and technically gifted than Merts? Answer, it’s his attitude and will to dominate and use his size to his advantage. His belief in himself and game is what makes him special and a force to worry other teams. We don’t feel the same about Merts do we?

mertesacker joins the elite of players at arsenal who will bridge the gap for the talented and young, his assessment of arsenal just proves that.

I assume you are basing your judgement on watching mertesacker in his time in Germany, and for Germany? I assume you are not just assessing it on a debut season at Arsenal where the squad was in a form of re-build and blending all these new faces?

@TRM
Werder Bremen conceded 61 goals in the 2010/2011 season – one of the worst records in the table – and they finished up 13th. Per was woeful and hasn’t done anything since to suggest improvement, hence why he isnt first choice. He’s too slow and practically imobile. His turning cirlce is bigger than most Royal Navy ships.

You forgot to evaluate the season before were WB conceded 40 goals, that was 9 more than BM who finished first.
You also forgot to mention that in that season WB scored 71 goals themselves. 1 less than BM. also you forgot to mention in the 2010/11 season that WB only scored 47 goals. To highlight one fact is not enough to determine the full picture.

Just to help you out if you are trying to work them stats out. Almeida, Ozil, Diego and Moreno (to name a few) were all sold between them seasons, so I guess it starts to explain there decline
Football is about a squad game, lets get behind All of them as at one point they will all be needed.
