Merteseacker Officially Joins the Gunners
The Gunners have officially confirmed the second signing to help revamp their defence. German international Per Mertesacker will be joining Arsenal from Werder Bremen after Arsenal agreed terms with the German club.
Arsenal.com reports that the deal is subject to the completion of the formal registration process after which he will be the new rock in the Gunners’ defence.
Mertesacker stands at nearly 2 meters tall and Arsenal fans will hope that his height will help the side avoid conceding so many goals from set-pieces. The 26-year-old is also know for being an accurate tackler having only picked up a couple of yellow cards in more than 200 games in the German top flight.
His abilities have made him a mainstay for the German national side for whom he has now played in 75 games including two World Cups and the European Championship. He has also played in around 50 games in Europe for Werder Bremen and so brings bags of experience to the side.
Arsenal fans will be optimistic that the signing together with the arrival of Santos will make for a less leaky defence. A back four of Santos, Mertesacker, Vermaelen and Sagna looks like the kind of defence that will keep more clean sheets and will be better able to cope with the long ball tactics employed by many Premiership teams.

Wenger has turned his defence around, and his fans, almost! Get Mikel Arteta instead of Benayoun pleaaaase…Arteta is a fantastic playmaker and great with set pieces, Benayoun is just ugly..Thankyou Wenger, you left it late, but better late than never!

Oh at last – if not anythng the height itself would ensure that we are safer at set-piees against us & we would be more potent in corner kicks & free-kicks from RVP… This guy has a long stretch & knows how to utilise his height…
Really looking forward to his combination with Vermealan… Mertesacker can play the initial upfront CB getting all the long balls & behind there would be Verminator with his quick & nimble feet….
This duo sgould rock – fantastic news – and with Santos as LB ( Gibbs as cover ), Sagna as RB ( Jenkinson as cover ) – we are more or less set in defence…
Just need a quality Midfielder to replace either Fab or Nasri – a holding one would be better b’cos Song is quite temperamental at times & Frimpong has a long way to go….
Looking forward to a new chapter with these new signings….my belief states that Park would be a better acquisition than Chamakh..Korean players have eternal zeal…they don’t give up…

Finally some business is happening here
I would like to see at least Arteta join too. Hopefully we add Benayoun too i don’t think he’ll be a regular first choise but he will be good for backup and will eventually do some work in the long run. Come on 2 more signings at least!!!

Im not too xcited about benayoun dnt kno wat wenger sees but hes the manager but thought better quality midfielder would be comin in to replace cesc cos i dnt think ramsey should be a starter dnt think hes ready yet. Yeah looking A LOT better than a week ago !!! The problem in the midfiels is still a factor that’s bothers me a lot!!! Will we be able to hold our own against the likes of manure,chelsea,city and liverpool ? I’m sad to say I don’t see that happening unless we sign a unbelievable holding midfield player!!!! We urgently need m’vlla if we achieve that I think we can start believing and will see good results from our side !! Know I’m sounding negative BUT I fully support our boys and I’m sure we will exceed all expectations everybody had for us after we lost fab and nasri! In le prof we trust!!!!

it looks like benayoun is coming to arsenal. what a joke. we needed a quality creative midfielder in his mid 20s not a bloody 31 year old donkey. come on wenger u should have bought earlier when u had the time and didn’t need to rush round. we could have had someone of much higher quality like hazard or montolivo or Martin. why didn’t wenger spend before? we had loads of cash to spend and he’s gone and bought the cheapest, oldest player out there because his stubbornness took him ages to realise what we truly needed.

Considering there is a high possibility we will get Cahill on a freebie next season we shld pay a couple more mil for Arteta. So what if he isn’t worth it we are desperate so we have to take desperate measures. This is wonderful. some of us had lost hope completely and were now beginning to lose interest in the premier league but now with the signing of a German international and Santos as defense rocks, we shall be there. The area where we are still shaky is the mid field where we need a strong tackler to replace Fab and Na sri who will regret their departure. We also need one serious and physical striker that can crack rocked defenses like that of Man u, Chelsea and the like to win trophies. once that is done arsen wenger will always be praised at arsenal.

Yeah, Arteta negotiations back on the table! This could go down to the wire. My belief is Arteta would be signed on a 2 yr deal and Benayoun on a season long loan. If Wenger wants ,Cahill is up for grabs at 13 million.
