Patrick Vieira talks about why he doesn’t work for Arsenal

Posted on January 03, 2012 by admin

The Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, who was the captain of the famous Invincibles and scored the penalty that won Arsenal their last trophy in 2005, has been speaking about why he decided to work for Man City rather than Arsenal when he retired from playing last summer.

He was generally reviled by Arsenal fans when it was reported that Vieira turned down the chance to work with Arsene Wenger, but according to the man himself, their was never an offer on the table from the Gunners!

“I don’t miss playing at all, I feel like I have done all I can do,” Vieira said. “I’m often asked why I stayed at Manchester City instead of getting involved at Arsenal.

“People may have difficulty understanding, but this is a continuation of what I did for two years here as a player.

“The club has opened its doors to me, shown me respect and taken into consideration all my experience.

“Since I left Arsenal, I always had a very good relationship with Arsene Wenger, but I never received a proposal from them.

“With City, it was done without pushing things and it was the proposal that I wanted. It was a pretty easy decision to work for the club.”

So I reckon Arsenal fans can now forgive Vieira for choosing City if the Gunners never offered him a job in the first place! Perhaps Wenger should have moved a bit faster if he really wanted him at the Emirates as was widely rumoured?

@Big Gun, I understand why you say Bergkamp, after all, it would would be great to see an Arsenal legend back in some capacity. But is Bergkamp a ‘genius tactician’, I think that its actually Arsene who fits under that category. I reckon Bergkamp could be used to coach our strikers and pass on some of that godlike technique to our players (e.g. to Walcott, who apparently needs it)

  11. kel says:

i totally agree with The Prof & nd…. wenger couldnt handle a tony adams or vieira personality working as his assistant manager simply because they would question him, wenger is in a comfort zone and pat Rice wouldnt dare question him! and yes nd usmanov is are only way out bwcause kronke will not invest its that simple just check out all his other sports teams?? you’ll see there quite averge mmm! just like we are!

@ kel, I live in St. Louis, home of the Rams (American football), and lived in Denver, Rapids (futbol), the Avs (hockey), and the Nuggets (basketball). All these teams, after coming under Stans control, have fallen apart. I have seen it first hand and fear Arsenal are on the same path.

evidence are there for everyone to see that arsene is not interested in building a winning team. no top manager will allow poor performance every week. mancini got rid of adebayor, bellamy etc… villas-boas got rid of anelka and alex which i believe are all better than our lame ducks. but arsene is not just insisting on keeping them he arrogantly picked them ahead of anyone. nothing is wrong with miyaichi, park and chamberlain. all talks about them not ready is pure lies. he just wants to carry on playing his lame ducks . unlike mancini and villas-boas he thinks he cannot be sacked as long as he qualifies for champions league football every year

Is managing the Arsenal all about managing expectations these days? We are told how poor we are,
how difficult it is to keep our best players and how we should be happy with our lot. We have now
become bottom feeders making do wih scraps from the table of the rich clubs. At the end of each season,
it is not just a question of whether we will lose a player, but rather how many top players we
going to lose. A team can only lose a few top players before they become quite average. Is it now the
test of an Arsenal manager to measure how much he could do with less, Not how full the trophy room is?

  17. sam says:

patrick vieira doesn’t really have passion for arsenal like thierry henri. we can accuse him of going to city for money but we cannot hide the fact arsenal are going nowhere at moment. if you look at what we had on the bench yesterday was really laughable, we knew that if anything goes wrong there is no plan B we had no player who could come in and change the game, all average at best: almunia, arshavin, chamakh, rosicky, benayoun, squillaci. some of these will probably come in to make things worse. maybe vieira would have advised wenger to get rid of all these subs and bring in new ones and wenger will refuse coz he still believes they are top quality and they all fall out.
this is serious abuse of power by the arsenal management team.

    @SVGunner…..Wenger the master tactician? hahahahaha.

So thats why against a physical team in Fulham, he brings on the lightweight Rosicky and Benayoun? Both Attacking midfielders when we needed to protect a lead? Wenger has no plan B as we cannot defend. He is no master tactician at all. That’s why he went for broke and it failed miserably as we couldnt get a hold in the game. It was one way traffic. A master tactician has flexibility on the team and bench and several strategies. Sorry but you have rose tinted specs on.

Another major issue at Arsenal is Pat Rice. he maybe an Arsenal legend but he is a total yes man and has no backbone.

Could you imagine Adams accepting this drivel of a defence??? with the exception of Kos,TV5.He would have sorted things out.

We have Bould but it appears he is a yes man too.

Keown knows what needs to be done. Get the guy in. Get Adams in. get the dross out. Anyone could play for us at the moment. There is no quality control.

Wenger is at best an A1 Scout. He is not a mentor, even Cesc said that he doesnt man manage. he is aloof from the team. He has a regime and a style of play, thats it. No tactics. In transfer dealings he has had as many flops as stars. Recently more flops than stars. Some of our recent transfer dealings have been nothing short of shambolic.

Wenger is no master of tactics don’t make me laugh.

Love Vieira for all the great times he gave Arsenal, but the ultimate truth here is MONEY! I don’t blame him as everyone deserves a retirement plan and City obviously see his value in mentoring players. It would’ve been ideal to see him coaching at Arsenal, but I think we can let him slide for all his achievements with the Gunners.

You can take the man out of Arsenal but you can’t take the Arsenal out of the man. Respect.

The truth is wenger is too proud to accept his faults, how long will you continue to lose a match and end up blaming the ref? Wenger and the arsenal board are doing same things over and over again yet expecting a different result, that’s the height of stupidity. They are very calous, deceitful and greedy. the club is losing fans everyday but they don’t care. Afterall, the fans will clap if they manage to qualify for CL without any trophy in the whole season.

The best days of Wenger are over. That is the truth.Watching Arsenal play is longer good for the health of all true Gooners.AW do not want to accept that the dynamics of the EPL have changed. He believes he could still continue to buy like Stoke and then win like City. That cannot happen.Frankly, if he fails to reinforce the Team this January, then it would a mere dream for any Gooner to expect CL football next year.

Whereas utd have had scholes, solskjaer pitching in for the club,,n guardiola for barca!! need I say more? Arsenal needs a changeover to get rid of all this mediocrity that manifests itself in so many ways!
