Peter: Should Wenger really keep Carlos Vela?

Posted on June 23, 2011 by admin

Carlos Vela not allowed to leave Arsenal. Why? by Peter Rooke

The young Mexican Carlos Vela (maybe not so young nowadays) has spent many years at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger, and he has has played many games in the Carling Cup and FA Cup games, but despite some absolutely brilliant performances, Wenger has totally refused to give him extra playing time in the Gunners first team.

Vela wanted to go on loan to Spain in January but Wenger blocked it saying that he needed Premiership experience, and although he went to West Brom and even scored excellent goals for them as well, he couldn’t win a first team place at the relegation candidates. Now the Mexican still wants to move to La Liga, but Wenger is “extremely demanding” and won’t let him go anywhere withot permission.

Vela’s agent, Eduardo Hernandez, said yesterday: “I have had eight conversations with Arsenal, the most recent was last Friday, and Carlos is an Arsenal player, he will stay at Arsenal and is not for sale.

“The process with Carlos is a little bit slow.

“Arsene Wenger is an extremely demanding coach, he sent him on loan for six months to West Brom not with the results he wanted, but, nevertheless, everything is going very well.”

Vela could have got some real game-time playing for Mexico at the Copa America last week, but Arsene Wenger again refused to let him go, like a peeved-off parent grounding the wayward son during the summer holidays.

His relationship with Wenger is obviously very strained, but the Frenchman seems to be acting like it is a battle of wits and he obviously has no intention of giving in. But is it really worth destroying a youngsters career out of a fit of pique bbecause he won’t do what he’s told?

“His relationship with Wenger is obviously very strained”.
It only appears that way because of how you frame the situation in the article, whether that’s based on these quotes (which are surely translated), or on other reports.
Personally the only conceivable reason I can see for wenger wanting to keep him behind is that he want’s vela to be part of the 1st team squad for the summer, to integrate him into the squad perhaps, and possibly because he wants carlos to be fresh for next season.
He’s only ever had good things to say about carlos, and I hope now is the time for him to be given some real opportunities here.
When has wenger ever been so vindictive as to try to sabotage someone’s career. When they say they want to leave, he usually let’s them leave, except arguably in a few cases – but in each of these cases he has kept them specifically because he wants to play them in the 1st team, not because of some vendetta he has against them. He’s not that emotional a person as to want to seek some kind of revenge. And what has vela ever done to arsenal or arsene that would stir up that kind of emotion in anyone?!

Why are u making up stories? U are trying to give tabloids something to use to slate Arsene! Vela just needs to work hard that’s all..Arsene likes him that’s the reason why he wants him to stay to fight for his place..the reason why he asked not to go to cops America is because for the last few pre-seasons vela misses out on the vital training while away with the national team..vela needs a good pre season training like nasri and Theo

So man, stop all these negative articles we have had enough of these the last 10 months

There’s a pattern with Wenger and his young players. Just look at Jack. When Wenger is going to get a player ready for the first team he always loans them out to clubs for the last 6 months of the previous season to get them prepared. Expect to see Vela play a bigger role at the club next season.

Vela is still rated as the best finisher at the club and i don’t think I’ve seen him start more than 2 games back to back definitely needs more opportunities before being criticised by shut supporters.

The flip is wenger might not want him going so that a transfer can be sorted. also he could be plqnning to use him in august. remember we have 5 matches before the transfer window closes. for him to prove his worth.if he is to play the nasri role on the left and rival arshavin.

its gud vela stays, sometimes you dont have to to depend on the amount of goals a player score but the class of goals he scores at his age and give him the chance

  10. Goon Warrior says:

Gunnersfan- Vela came from Chivas just like Chicharito and even had a better seasons with them than what Chicharito had. Wenger brought him after he was the leading goal scorer of the U-17 World Championship in 2005, where Mexico Won it.

I agree with JROCK give him a good preseason and I bet we will see him in the mix a lot this season.

    In Wenger, I trust!

Vela is a very good finisher. I love the way he beat the goalkeeper with his brilliant skills. He is a left foot striker, so he can learn many things from V.Persie. He could be the next Arsenal generation with Walcott, Wilshere, Ramsey after V.Persie and Cesc.

yeah, i definitely think that a lot of you hacks are quick to shut down players even though they are at least 90% better than any of you fat slags who just think they know what they’re talking about, STFU AND LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THEIR POSITIONS FOR A REASON! There’s a reason for why Wenger has kept his job so long…he’s good at it. So cram it. We support a respectable, unique, and top class club. Way better than those mops over at wipe ass lane. Or celtknee. ARSENAL FOR LIFE.

Vela is much better than chicharito. Chicharito has no clue of what to do with the ball when he is outside the 18. This boy will tear defenses up when he gets a good run of games.

vela is a gd player who can play as a striker or a winger.as 4 his goals,i don’t remember any player(except walcott) in the current arsenal squad who has ever scored a chipping goal as vela did.finally,am 101% behind wenger 4 i believe he has a reason to do so.go vela! go wenger!arsenal till i die.

Vela should stay and be given the chance to prove himself. There isn’t a good finisher like Vela in Arsenal, he’s second to none. Keep him Wenger!

  20. S.H says:

    @ Davi

Some valid points made. I agree with most things mentioned. Wenger does need to play him more in the first team though. I’m surprised Bendtner was preferred again last year. The Mexican is a classy finisher and scores in aplomb fashion. Wenger has stated that Vela is one of the quickest guys in the squad with the likes of Walcott, Clichy and Traore.

I believe Vela is more poised than Bendtner and Walcott and he really just needs to play at least 30-60mins a game to gain confidence. This is probably the reason why Wenger is stubborn to release him because he understands the quality in Vela. On the contrary, if we do sign Gervinho, that’s bad news for Vela as he’ll be behind V.Persie, Gervinho and Walcott. Vela is more a case of someone like v.Persie getting injured.

If Wenger does keep him, he must play Vela more, not only in League Cups, but regular premier league football. His ability and value can only increase as he has much potential. Funny how more teams are interested in vela than Bendtner!

  21. chris says:

Well if Vela is rated as the best finisher in the club … why is he only ever used from the bench (occasionally) and then on the left wing FFS ? Answer – because Wenger had only one formation and does not do tactics. Vela is wasting his own time at Arsenal. We have Walcott anyway – except he has to play on the wing too !!

  22. rocky says:

We need to stick him on loan for a season in the BPL, and let him get a seasons worth of starts under his belt. QPR, Bolton or Swansea perhaps, that way he’ll have to work for his goals, as he wont have any world class players serving it on a plate for him. Give him some game time, and see how he gets on.

He could be our Chicharito, but he seems to lack that hunger, and seems a bit laid back on the pitch, where as Chich is always snapping at the heels and looking to poach a goal when he can.

last comment by rocky is spot on.
Vela is a player that needs to work harder. I think coming to the Arsenal so soon after his exploits in the age group football ready did some damage to his enthusiasm for hard work. he is a better footballer than Chicharito and with a chance can be a very good goalscorer. (Remember a certain Ruud van Nisterooy vs Thierry henry). ManU tend to go for players that fit in to a certain system ruthlessly while Wenger goes for flair. He Wenger needs to find a balance.

Vela should go because he is being destroyed at Arsenal. Wenger just plays the same football no plan B when things are not going well. Vela should have played down the middle but if he stays Wenger will start playing him wide and destroy him just like he has done to Nasri, Arshavin, Gibbs, Walcott etc. The formation at arsenal does not suit Vela. I guarantee you if he goes to Man U he will score loads.

    @ Goon Warrior

Apparently something went wrong along the way such as AW not giving him any chances!

If he is that good as some people claim, he should do himself a favor and leave the club for first team opportunities elsewhere because he sure won’t get it at Arsenal under AW.

look, there’s something wrong with our transfer policy, how much money we spent on him n what did he give in return after 5/6 years?
we could’ve bought a ready made striker with that money,am sure he’s taken more then 10 millions @ the club…

WENGER is affraid of spending,cz mancity and chelsea is already better team then us.were as manu is king of premiership.
arsenal won trophies under wenger that was the time arsenal spend huge money n sign bergkamp, viera, henry, edu, pires, wiltord and we had big CB adams n keown.
no premiership side could spend those days like manu n arsenal.that’s y title were shared between 2 club since 96 to 2003.chelsea,spurs,l’pool and new castle the only club who use to fight for only uefacl.not title.
today the case isdiffirent there are 4 club who want to win title n 3 more other who want to play uefa cl not cup.
this is the reason y wenger said he will be happy to see arsenal at top 4 for 20 years.
all those trophies we have had is all bcz of great player we had in arsenal squard not wenger.
this is the fact n truth.

I have to say, that as a Mexican American football fan, this is an interesting scenario as Mexico is just starting to send players to Europe and we are all rooting for them to succeed and we are all nervous about whether or not they get fair chances. It wasn’t that long ago that Vela and Chicharito were considered equal prospects, maybe even Vela was rated higher. But everything you read about Man U is that from day 1 they went out of their way to make Chicharito comfortable, even learning to cook his favorite Mexican food for him.
Now from afar I’ve always liked Wenger as a coach who could be good for Mexican players and I’m hoping that he’s just cleverly using tough love tactics because Mexico needs Vela to be in top form for Mexico in 2014, but at this rate, he’s not going to make the squad b/c of lack of playing time.
I think Arsene is a good coach who’ll do right by Vela, and it’s now time for Vela to prove his talent and work ethic in response.
