Redknapp – Arsenal can win title, but Spurs won’t be far behind!
The Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp thinks that Arsenal are good enough to win the Premiership this season, but says that his Spurs team are closing the gap on their great rivals, and won’t be far behind them at the end of the season.
He said “Arsenal have an excellent youth set-up, a conveyor belt of young players coming through.
“The gap is closing. We’re trying to turn it around but it’s not easy.
“There’s not a million miles between the teams. I don’t think that there will be much of a gap at the end of the season.
“Arsenal can win the title. They are a very well run club and the manager has done a good job.”
In your dreams ‘Arry!
But he did go on to speak a bit of sense about the lack of quality young English players, and thinks that this summer may be Englands last chance of ever lifting the World Cup.
He said: “Good, young British footballers are a dying breed.
“We’re seeing more and more foreign players and foreign owners.
“The standard of kids is not as strong as in the past as there are so many different things for them to do.
“In my day we only played football.
“We need to improve recruitment. There’s not a massive amount of talent around in this country but it’s still out there.
“We’ve got a great chance of winning this World Cup but after this group of players I’m not so sure that the future looks good.
“If we don’t win the World Cup, I’m sure that Fabio Capello will get slaughtered. He’s about the only manager not to have suffered abuse.”
You certainly don’t need a crystal ball to predict that the press will end up by saying that Capello is “Not so Fab-io!” when England fail to get past the quarter-finals as usual, but to say that Spurs will be close behind Arsenal at the end of the season is living in fantasy land!

update:: Redknapp – Arsenal can win title, but Spurs won't be far behind! http://bit.ly/aLsnKc
they will be close only 5 or 6 places behind us! points wise they will be well off, still have us, united and chelsea to play! no european football for them next year
That is surprising! He can agree with me that we can win the EPL this season! The gap is there and Spurs may finish at 7th positoin!
There are tonnes of young English talent coming through the ranks and none moreso than the ranks of the arsenal youth system.
Walcott is part of the next generation, Wilshire, Cruise, Thomas, Simpson, Lansbury, Gilbert, Watt, Bartley, Ayling I could go on. Thats almost a full team of potential future stars with Wislhire, Walcott, Freeman and Simpson all pretty much guaranteed to go on and do great things.
What’s ironic is that for all the years that Wenger was criticized for having the least amount of English players in his team, the Arsenal set up has arguably the largest pool of future English talent.
England won’t win the world cup this year or for many years to come until they get rid of this insane ultra patriotism crap they always come up with. While on paper they have the talent to do so, they just don’t have the constitution to deal with the pressure and it upsets their game. England are very hard to beat but they also find it hard to win when in a cup competition which means they eventually have to take a penalty shoot out, thats when the ridiculous hype, overestimation “englands hopes and dreams” “we invented this game” and the fact that the person who fails to score becomes a national disgrace becomes too much for players and they inevitably fold.
I’m Dutch/Irish and while the Dutch team suffers the same bullshit pressure of being an underachieving top side with world beating players that can’t gel as a coherant unit, not much is expected of the Irish team here in Ireland just that they will fight to the last minute and play with heart, something England never seem to do.
Spot on Bongo. Agree with everything you say but you beat me to it.
I was gonna say regarding England and this so called “lack of quality young English players coming through”, i think this is a load of old tosh if you ask me!
There is still the same class of English talent coming through as there ever has been, the only difference is that only the best will get to ply their their trade in the EPL.
Where as years past you would find these “not so good” players making up the numbers in England’s top flight, you’ll now find these same players playing in the Championship where if you check the majority of them are English/British. How can people say there is a lack of talent when we have good young players who are already playing regularly and will be part of England’s future for years to come such as Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, James Milner, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Aaron Lennon etc etc. Throw into this the upcoming stars of tomorrow such as Jack Rodwell, Dan Gosling, Adam Johnson, Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere etc and i also guarantee over the next five years there will be other players come through who will make a name for themselves so i can’t agree with ol’ harry’s statement.
I have to admit though, the goal keeping issue is a bit of a problem but a lot of that is i believe down to the fact that England was for a number of years blessed with having one of the finest goal keepers of the modern era in David Seaman who was arguably also thought of as probably the best keeper in the world at the hight of his career. And this was only a short time after the retirement of another goal keeping great in Peter Shilton so we had it pretty good for a number of years. Behind these two though you had chris woods backing up shilton and the choice of either tim flowers, nigel martyn or ian walker backing up David Seaman, none of whom were in the same calibre as shilton & seaman so “Yes” i do think that is part of the reason we feel it ever so more now.
But to say there is a lack of talent coming through and that this will probably be England’s last chance to win the world cup i can’t agree with that.
The Championship is what the Premier League was when it first started, full of good English players but the majority of them nowhere near international class! So although the Premier League today might have fewer English players, the ones who do make it (with the exception of those playing for your Hull’s, Stoke’s & Bolton’s etc., you know all the nasty teams that can’t actually play football) make it because they are the best of the best of English talent!!!!
Didn’t Harry Redknapp write off Arsenal’s chance earlier? He’s full of bull.
@Steven. I’m glad someone mentioned Harry Redknapp’s earlier comments about Arsenal. I was going to say something and now I don’t have to.
LOL. I actualy cant beleive he thinks theyre just behind us. They have 2 good players. I dont thikn either get in our squad on paper either. Bale and Lennon. Fully fit i play clichey and probaly rosicky or Walcott. Sure theyre close.. if they buy 11 world class players.
