Roma now favourites for Clichy at £8m
It is being reported this morning that Roma are now leading the race to sign Gael Clichy, easily beating the paltry £5m offered by Liverpool.
Arsene Wenger would much rather that Clichy went abroad to play rather than strengthen one of Arsenal’s Premiership rivals so Roma is much more attractive, although Clichy himself is not very keen on leaving England.
As the Frenchman only has 12 months left on his contract and has told Arsenal that he wants to leave, Wenger will be happy to recoup £8m to contribute to the funds needed for his replacement, with Newcastle’s Enrique or Leighton Baines touted as a competent replacement.
Many fans have commented that they would rather that Samba and Cahill played as first-choice centre-backs while Thomas Vermaelen could move to the left to replace Clichy. Who thinks that is a good idea?

I have no problem with him going to roma but varmaelen playing on the side never we nid a gud replacement like baines.maybe varmaelen to play as a defensive midfielder again I have my doubts there if he was fit enough I would sign samba only ,then a quality defensive midfielder like the then vieira

We should consider buying a left back to replace clichy. Let verm and samba take the cb. That would help us.verm sometimes helps the LB, it makes the defence strong. Once a gunner .always a gunner

Why do people want vermaelen at left back. None of us have seen him play there so he might be no good as a left back.

Why is everyone saying buy Baines ? I read that his market value is 12.3m but on another website i read Moyes saying he’s not interested in selling his clubs’ player of the season and he would only sell him for a VERY HIGH PRICE. I would expect them to value him at something ridiculous like 25m. It’s no good suggesting all these pie-in-the-sky transfers unless the club are actually open to the idea of selling the player. Vermaelen can do a better job at LB than Clichy, i’m convinced of that. At Ajax his regular position was LB and although he is not considered to be a creative force he would still be more creative than Clichy and much better defensively. IMO the ideal situation is to get a world class creative left back for less than 15m but i’m not convinced that there’s one available so moving Vermaelen to LB and bringing in a solid CB, of which there seem to be many available, would seem like the more realistic option.

Vermaelen, is not a left back,he will not be good at left back. He is good to play at center half because he is an inteligent player who keeps his eyes open for any dengerous attack from opposition, and block it. so we need him at center half.

As for Enrique, a quote of his from Wiki “I love the city, I love the club and I don’t care about signing for another team”. Added to the fact that Newcastle have a bumper kitty of transfer funds from the sale of Carrol you get a player that doesn’t want to leave and a club that don’t want to sell.

A better option without Wenger spending 25million for a left back would be Izzaguire of Celtics or Jose enrique of Newcastle the Former is more attacking than Enrique so we should go for him
as for DM i heard Patrick Viera is free right now we should sign him on a Coach-player role for a year or two and Lehamann will also stay with us to work on his Coaching badge

LOL mate, try reading this quote from Alan Pardew about Enrique….
“We have tried as hard as we can, in the financial situation we are in, to keep him. We offered him an excellent deal, but he doesn’t seem to be interested in signing it at the moment. It is frustrating – but that is the situation we are in.
“It is up to him, but he wants to see what else there is for him.”
He also said Enrique wants to join a Champions League club. Does that sound like a player that wants to stay at Newcastle? Or join Liverpool?

@Admin. I’m obviously a bit behind the times on the Enrique situation, please excuse me. Baines is a bit of a dream i believe (what’s he worth if Jordan Henderson is 20m and Phil Jones is 16m) but if Enrique is a genuine possibility i think it’d be better to buy him and keep TV in the centre. Clichy was the worst first XI player last year by a margin, it’ll be a relief to get him replaced.

Btw what a cheek if that’s true about Clichy refusing to sign a contract and refusing to move abroad. If you don’t want to play for the club then don’t expect them to guarantee that you don’t need to move house. It’s like quitting your job but saying to your boss, make sure you get me a job nearby. If i was manager i’d have sold him last year when his price was still high and i’d not be offering him a new contract but that’s just my opinion.

Who are these amateurs? TV5 plays left back for belgium often enough (because they have loads of centre backs, e.g. Kompany), he’s great at defending and good going forward too, just because you’ve never seen him play there doesn’t mean he isn’t any good at it.
I think this is a good option but ONLY if we have first rate CB’s in the middle, and Koscielny and Squillaci barely fit that bill, Djourou might if he keeps improving. If clichy goes you need to buy baines/Enrique as a direct replacement, or buy 2 CBs of the likes of Sakho and Vertonghen – I think the first option is way cheaper, but the second is way better for our defence.

3. Buy Sakho for £13-16m and move him to LB
