Russian giants close to Yuri Zhirkov and make move for Andrei Arshavin

Posted on August 01, 2011 by admin

The cash-rich Anzhi Makhachkala are reportedly close to sealing a deal for the Chelsea left-winger Yuri Zhirkov, who has become disillusioned with life at Stamford Bridge after failing to hold down a regular place in the team.

The Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov is aiming to make Anzhi into the biggest club in Russia and Zhirkov was one of the most popular stars in the Russian Premier League before he joined Chelsea for £18m two years ago. With just 12 months left on his contract Chelsea were worried that Zhirkov would leave on a Bosman next season, but now he is readying for a medical before signing for Anzhi for just £13m.

According to Talksport Radio, Kerimov has now set his sights on Andrei Arshavin, who is also out of contract next year. The little Russian and his family have also seemed unsettled in London and may welcome the chance to be a big star back in his homeland before he retires from football.

Anzhi are on track to challenge for the Russian title, and with Zhirkov and Arshavin added to an already brilliant squad, Kerimov believes that the title will be coming his way.

Would Wenger be willing to let Arshavin go now that Gervinho will challenge for his place in the team?

No, because he needs back-up for the left and right of our final three (in the 4-3-3). Also, Arshavin wont go, he has basically said he’s staying by setting himself a target for next season annyway.

I hope Wenger will let Arshavin go. Within his inflexible Plan A only formation there has been no room for Arshavin to shine. He is not cut out to play wide left and track back. That is not where he excelled before joining us and as far as I know it never has been.

Wenger specialises in buying central strikers or No. 10s and dumping them out on the wing. They have mostly failed : Reyes, Wiltord, Arshavin, Bendtner, Walcott (?)

If we play like how we did in Emirates Cup, no way we can win anything next season. Only players like Gervinho, Wilshere and Frimpong showed some spirit, the rest still suffering from the Birmingham blow.

might as well let him leave , we have reduced arsharvin to a winger whose job is to give awkward crosses.

  6. T2T says:

    Current speculation:
    £36m Fabregas
    £ 22m Nasri
    £ 9m Bendtner
    £ 12m Arshavin
    £ 1m JET
    £ 25m Transfer kit w/o sales
£105m Total available with sales (IF we sell Fab, Nasri, Ashavin)

GK: Szczesny, Fabianski, Mannone (Almunia to leave on a free?)
    RB: Sagna, Eboue, Jenkinson
CB: Vermaelen, Koscielny, New CB, Djourou, Bartley, Squillaci, Miquel
    LB: Gibbs, Traore
    DM: Song, Fimpong
    MF: Wilshere, Ramsey, Diaby, Rosicky
    Strikers: RvP, Walcott, Gervinho, Chamakh,Vela

    Szczesny
    Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Gibbs
    Walcott, Song, Wilshere, Ramsey
    van Persie, Gervinho

OK, where to improve for£105m? Who can IMPROVE the squad and are available (both from the selling clubs’ perspective and where the players want to play in England)
    Need players in the 22 – 27 year age bracket, proven internationally and technically gifted. Potential incoming players need to be better than the “weakest” starter in the expected line up;
    - Top CB £15m (better than Koscielny)
    - Top LB £15m (better than Gibbs)
    - Top MF/Wide player £25m (better than Walcott)
    - Striker £25m (better than Gervinho)
Still, we will have £25m surplus…
If the above assumptions, we have a top RB (Sagna EPL RB 10-11), one top CB (Vermaelen EPL CB 09-10), one top MF (Wilshere EPL MF 10-11), one top striker RvP (18 goals in 25 matches EPL 10-11). Ramsey can emulate Wilshere, Gervinho looks promising, Frimpong looks the part and Rosicky has had a very good pre-season. IF we sell top players, we need to bring in top players, perhaps not like-for-like…

  7. Aussie Jack says:

According to who you listen to , or read, we have been linked with some of Europes and England`s best players this summer. Falcao, Benzema, Hazard, Mata, and others including young Joel Campbell. Add to these Samba, Cahill, Baines, Jageilka, and ,gawd help us, Barton, yet there is still no evidence of the busy transfer summer we were told to expect. Two or three years ago Fabregas was crying out for top quality support but we didn`t have the money so it didn`t come. This year Nasri said he wanted top grade players signed before he would commit himself, they haven`t come, and we `do` have the money.
As we`ve come to expect our negotiations, much like our football, falls apart at the eleventh hour. Maybe we do need David Dein back after all.

i am tired of wenger reasons, look at the reasons he gave for the match against boca, We need defenders. i think Samba is the best defender in EPL, with a lot of expriance and leadership abilty. He is also a great fighter. Surly he is better than Jags and Chail. and he is costs less than these two players. WE NEED HIM.

Wiki is bull crap. It said Mata is now an Arsenal player! Anyway, Arshavin isn’t going anywhere…this is his season to shine as he will compete with Gervinho for the second striker slot in our new 4-4-2 formation.

    we can’t defend as a team,thats the problem,surely pat rice isn’t doing his job properly,with wenger’s blessing.
i know ppl feel loyalty to wenger,i understand, but for me i can never forgive a lier,he lied to us season after season n he knows all they doing is;saving money due to the stadium move,do i care?sell that fucking stadium or have a long term strategy to get ur money back ffs,so the team on-field competitiveness stays on top, even the neutrals across the world knows what we need, everyone knows(from school kids to pundit)the board continues to think financial, that’s the reason am angry,so angry to the point i can’t believe myself!!all that & we’re only in pre-season,things needs to be done differently this time round.try a new number2 @ least, try to get martin keown n winterburn to the coaching staff,or simply, try a diferent manager.
