Seriously who should be Szczesny’s back-up at Arsenal?

Posted on February 11, 2012 by admin

This season has seen the emergence of Wojciech Szczesny as the undisputed Number One at Arsenal, and for the first time since the departure of the Invincible Jens Lehmann, we have a world-class keeper in our squad. But do we have a decent enough deputy to the young shot-stopper? The answer is quite simply a big NO!

Our other squad keepers include Manuel Almunia, Lukasz Fabianski and young James Shea, with the Italian Vito Mannone out on loan at Hull City.

Where do I get started with Manuel Almunia? The very fact that this guy still owns the no.1 jersey at the club baffles me. I mean how many points has this guy’s stupidity cost us over the years??

He stated sometime last month that he is not looking for a move away from the the Emirates, showing his utter lack of ambition. It’s like being third-choice doesn’t bother him. At 34 years of age, he should be playing first-team football contrary to which he should consider his options and move.

In all likelihood, the platinum-blonde Spaniard is never gonna play for Arsenal again. But the fact that we are burning 30 to 40k a week on him is a total waste. The sooner we get this him the wage bill, the better! Unarguably the biggest piece of deadwood in the squad.

And then, there’s the other Pole, Lukasz Fabianski. To be very honest, I think he’s a decent enough goalie, but is he good enough for Arsenal? Not really!

He has expressed his discontent over being left on the bench on several occasions and I strongly believe that this is his last season at the Emirates.

In all fairness to him, he has put in a few decent performances so far and is capable of the odd ‘spectacular’ save but is too error prone for me. I think he would be a good buy for some of the bottom or mid-table sides in the PL.

Guys like Martinez, Shea and Mannone (apart from his CL horror show!) have shown great potential so far but I think most of you will agree with me when I say that none of them are actually ready for first-team football.

The importance of Wojciech Szczesny to this Gunners side cannot be more stressed upon. Hell, I would go as far as to say that we would find ourselves in another goalkeeping crisis if he were to get injured.

So I certainly hope that Wenger will go into the market for a GK this summer and bring in a worthy deputy to Szczesny.

So who would Arsenal fans like to see brought in as a backup to our young Pole?

I don’t think we need to buy a goalie. Lets remember that goal keepers get better with age, recently Szczeny has being making the odd mistake as well, maybe a case of fatigue. I would recommend a bit more rotation between him and Fabianski so that both Poles get an opportunity. It is difficult to find and experience keeper who is still good enough and is willing to be number 2. We are in a unique position where or number 1 goalie is only 21 and is fantastic.

Just rotate them both for the moment.

  7. Honestly one of d most suprising thing 2 me about our club is seen almunia and squid still on our pay roll.concerng fabianski and mannone (my prefered choices),they lose confidence b’cos of lack of playing time.good enough, mannone is on loan which i think will help him a lot.so let’s give d two chance and see what they can do

We don`t have a back-up for Szczesny. We have goalkeepers but not quality. Wenger should address this issue in the closed season and let Almunia and Fabianski go.

  21. Johnno says:

This is why Wenger wanted Schwazer. But that goose Hughes said no, then left himself the mutton. That’s the sort we need though, someone two or three seasons from retirement willing to earn 20-30k a week to sit on the bench and perhaps act as a mentor and coach for Szczesny. Robinson or the Bolton keeper if they are relegated would be worthy. Capable and experienced. They’ll be someone somewhere in Europe available on a free in the Summer though.

one of the reasons Szczesny is so good is because he has a fellow polish compatriot (around the same age) contending for the #1 spot. Competition is extremely important, it promotes progress.

Why not wenger “french” goalkeeper..HUGO LLORIS..he is 24.

the goal keeper issue is out of it all our available keepers are all worth deputisimg the pole cat most axpecially fabiansky and mannoe. When alluminia was reign they’ve both deputised him when called upon and put up great performance. their lack of form is due to lack of playing time. And no matter how great players form is it will depreciate by playing on the bench no how good, tough is training the train is not up to the level of playing competetivelly.i will only recommend more playing time most expecially anytime we are playing small clubs. I rest my case

Szczesny should have the No 1 shirt…..

I dont see what Wenger sees every day in training but I have little to no confidence in Almunia, fabianski or Vito… ,I’m sorry but clumsy, indecisive & reckless are words that spring to mind, not ARSENAL…

A well rounded experienced keeper aka, (shay) would benefit szezney in his progression to become the best!…. Also he could handle the pressure if needed.
