Sevilla – Wenger won’t pay the price for Squillaci

The biggest Arsenal transfer rumour today was that Arsene Wenger was in touch with Sevilla to persuade them to part with the French international centre-back, Sebastien Squillaci.

Well today Sevilla have confirmed the rumours, and also agreed that Squillaci missed the Champions League Qualifier just in case the deal went through. BUT, as seems to be the case every time Arsenal are chasing a player, Arsene Wenger is trying to get the asking price reduced!

Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez said: “The player asked not to play because of the offer from such a big team but, for the moment, we believe the offer is insufficient and Squillaci is still a Sevilla player,”

According to Sky, Squillaci is valued at around 8 million euros (about £7m). Surely it is worth that price to get an urgently needed central defender?

Just pay the man Wenger, and get Squillaci in the squad for Saturday!

why pay over the odds for a 30 yr old player, don’t you know it a ploy by sevilla to try get more more out of us.
i heard not long ago he was available for 5million,but because arsenal want him they now want 3million more.
can’t blame wenger standing his ground,i think you panicking

Trust me when i tell you Squillaci is not worth 8 million, he’s only ever a bit part player anywhere he goes and he is very injury prone. This signing if it happens is a real sign of panic on Wengers part which i find worrying. But you only get what your prepared to pay for and clearly Arsene isn’t prepared to spend much.

To be honest, i’m not sure if he’s very good this Squillaci, but for that price we could have solid and known quality, NICOLAS BURDISSO. Inter can sell him for around 7 million, why no go for him instead, he had a fantastic season at Rome last year and is in good shape. My dream would be David Luiz with an offer of 25 million + Traore, but we all know that that won’t happen ..

Why would Wenger not want to play less for a player? This is part of the normal negotiation process that every club goes through when buying a player. Sevilla obviously want to get as much as they can for their player and we want to pay as little as possible. The board have a legal responsibility to use the shareholders money responsibly, so why would they throw away millions of pounds to get the player a few days earlier. Maybe you’d feel different if it was your own money.

Shock, all this talk and still we bought no1. Wenger you tight fisted t**t why not dig a little deeper into your wallet and find someone a little younger but is still strong in defence, reliable and not injury prone.

Re:Jack: A bit part player anywhere he goes? 62 appearances for Lyon in two seasons during which they won two league titles and one cup doesn’t sound much like a bit part player to me. He and Cris were the 1st choice CB’s and Lyon’s defence was one one of the best in Europe at the time.

8 million euros is more like £6.5 million and I think that is fair enough for a 30yr old CB with a decent level of experience. We could get 4+ years service from him. The issue probably comes from Wenger’s issue with 30+yr olds.

Most clubs would offer a 30yr old CB a 4-5 year contract but Wenger would probably only offer him 2-3 years. This is a stupidity because players aged 33-36 want to play so they would move clubs if they were not being picked. That means we could have made money from Gallas, Silvestre, Campbell and Senderos easily!

At the end of the day any CB we have on our books for 3-4 years will have ample experience at the very top level so they would be worth money upto the point where they can only play 1 game every 2 weeks!

We could have got £2million from Silvestre, £2million for Campbell and about £3-4million for Gallas.

That takes away the problem of paying huge salaries for players who don’t play.

Wenger seems to think it’s a problem but actually we’ve never had it. Arsenal palyers are always extremely hungry to play so if they get to 33 and aren’t being picked they will want to move!

Seriously…. Seb Squil has been an average player for a long time now. showed promise about 7 years ago, but not since. anyone who is kept out of the french squad by Gallas is not a great defender!!!!

I am African but this thing with Wenger signing players only if they are African or French is really pissing me off. Martesacker or Tasci were a good option for Arsenal, wat would happen if we face the Chavs or manure without Vermaelen and Kos- another 3-0, 4-1,2-0?

Did I just hear someone say Wenger should just pay the money so we can have Squillacci by Saturday? Wow the impatience is growing here. Even if they agreed on a transfer fee right now, there is no way that they finish negotiating player terms, completing a medical, and moving the player to London in less than a week. It won’t happen.

It seems like some people think signing a player is like buying a loaf of bread in the store. I want to see another defender at Arsenal just like everyone else, but it’s not like we haven’t been looking. Metersacker already said he doesn’t want to come to Arsenal as did Tasci, Campbell decided to sign for Newcastle (or rather his wife decided for him) it’s not going to happen overnight we have to be patient. Which transfer have you seen take place overnight? Chelsea still haven’t signed Ramirez, Man U tracked Chicarito for a year before signing him, the only people making quick signings are Man City, and that’s because they are being cheated on the transfer fees. Stop being impatient. The club is working to sign someone.

If I had to speculate, any signing that takes place probably will happen right on transfer deadline day.

Gooner boy, Steve, both well said. Beautiful. Finally some sense i suppose its is a bonus to sign someone, but at that price for a has been. Arsene pull your head and Georges cock out your arse and look for quality. BUY CHEAP BUY TWICE. Mug.

Always the same news, why is this a culture of delay in signing players after all these years of trophies drought. Par or Tasci would have come if Wenger had exacted pressure; Ozil was looking like a no-go-zone, now he’s resting at Madred. We need a stronger team to win trophies.

    All you pro w*nker fans:

Of course it is AW’s fault. The signing of players should have been done long ago. If he had acted early and NOT some weeks before the window is closing, he would have been in a better negotiation position and would not have to pay an overly inflated price.

What a disaster of a manager!

Baz pleasant to hear from you as always lol. Don’t want to sound like a pesimist but, does anyone else get the feeling with regards to buying in present times, Arsenal are really falling behind the bigger clubs. Its all well and good with all our youngsters and if we manage to hold on to them for long enough im sure they will be able to hold themselves in the championship if it ever got that bad positive it wont. As for now, Arsene seems to have miss placed his wallet and other clubs are expanding leaving us in the cold.

To be fair if you don’t agree, i don’t care, go join George and squeeze yourself into Wengers pockets, Mugs. spineless lizards.

This is just how Arsene and Arsenal operate.

He’s 30, on his last year of his contract, and apparently injury prone.

I have to agree with Wenger on this 7 million is just way too much, 4 million would be a more reasonable price.

edit: But offering him a one-year contract is just ridiculous, I know that he’s 30 and all but offering a one- year contract to a new signing who is well capable of playing for another 3-4 years.

WE HAVE YET ANOTHER INJURY FRIMPONG IS INJURYED FOR NINE MONTH,WHY HASN’T WENGER BOUGHT IN ENOUGH PLAYERS TO COVER INJURIES AND SUPENSIONS?? WHY HAVEN’T WE REPLASED THE PLAYERS WE LOST? WHY HASN’T WENGER GOT THE DEPTH? WHY DOSE THESE QUESTIONS KEEP BEING ASKED? WHY?

    @ Baz

I am sure that Fabregas is going to leave the club next season REGARDLESS of whether we win or lose. So a quality midfielder like Gourcuff etc should have been brought in to integrate into the midfield, get more familiar with the league and be prepared to take over next year! By “quality” this excludes Diaby, Denilson, Wilshere and Frimpong (too young and not ready!!).

If we had done that, we would have definitely been covered now that Nasri and mr. frimpong are out!

    AW has lost it!!

I TELL YA GUYS THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH WENGER

HE BECAME FAMOUS FOR BRINGING IN UNKNOWN PLAYERS AND MAKING THEM INTO SUPERSTARS.

HIS MAIN HIGHLIGHT COUP WAS WHEN HIS GOT CESC FROM BARCA.
AND EVERYONE WAS WONDERING WHO IS GOING TO REPLACE NO.4 VIERA.
AND WHEN CESC STOOD UP TO THE PLATE. EVERY ONE SAID WOW WENGER WOW YOU ARE THE MAESTRO.

NOW HERES WHERE THE ARROGANCE TOOK TOLL ON WENGER, COZ PEOPLE JUST LOVE TO BE PRAISED AND SINGLED OUT FOR THEIR QUALITIES.
NOW WENGERS BLINDED BY ARROGANCE AND WANTS MORE PRAISE SO HE FISHES AROUND FOR UKNOWN CHEAP PLAYERS SO HE CAN MAKE A NAME.

THATS THE THEORY BEHIND OUR TRANSFER POLICY.

AND HIS CRUSADE IS TO BRING A WHOLE TEAM INTO SUPERSTARS ON THE CHEAP/ HE CAN BUT HIS NOW MENTALLY WEAK/

HUMBLNESS IS STRENGTH AND ARROGANCE IS WEAKNESS.
