Arsenal could snap up Montoya for nothing! by Ash
Arsenal Wenger and Arsenal have been associated with a lot of free transfers in recent years with the signing of several players who were out of contract. Although that might not be the case with the new club record signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, Wenger still recognises a bargain when he sees one and that seems to be the case once again as he eyes up Martin Montoya from FC Barcelona. The story has spread around Europe from the Daily Mirror to Italian football websites like TuttoMercato.web.
Arsenal have already signed Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini on free transfers this summer and to be honest, both of them look to be good purchases on Wenger’s side. A deal for relatively unknown striker Marica who is out of contract after leaving Schalke in the summer is also seemingly on the cards according to Sky Sports, however perhaps like Marouane Chamakh, Wenger is going down the wrong road with this player.
And now it looks as if Wenger is lining up his next free signing in Martin Montoya from Barcelona, who will be out of contract next summer. ‘Here in the city’ isn’t a very well-known source however they as well as many others claim that the Daily Mirror has shed some light on Wenger’s latest target and the Frenchman is confident he can get his man for nothing next summer with Barcelona unlikely to renew the Spaniard’s contract.
Arsenal and Barcelona have a long standing history of European rivalry, perhaps heightened more because of the amount of transfer dealings that goes on between the two clubs. Barcelona have taken the likes of Fabregas, Henry, Song and Hleb off our hands in recent years, whilst Wenger has also had his fair share from Barcelona, the only difference is they are just unknown teenagers from the academy. The likes of Fabregas, Merida, Miquel, Toral and Bellerin have all joined the Gunners from Barca and now Montoya, who is older at 22, could be the next player to make the switch between Spain and England.
Montoya is a right back and so he could provide effective cover for someone like Sagna or even compete directly with Jenkinson however to me the fact we already have Jenkinson makes me doubt whether or not this story is true or not. It wouldn’t surprise me if Wenger did have Montoya on his target list however whether or not we really need the Barcelona man is debatable for now, especially with Bellerin also coming through the ranks.
