Should Arsenal go for the Carling Cup? Or can Wenger turn it around?
Today I have a new Guest Poster called AFC Chazza. He is seriously thinking about starting his own Arsenal blog and has (very bravely) decided to showcase his first article on Just Arsenal News. Our readers are well known for not pulling their punches, so I invite everyone to give their honest opinion on Chazza’s blogging skills…..
What can Wenger do to Arsenal to turn it around and win the league, or should we go for the League Cup?
We all knew what was going to happen in the chelsea game, and the exact same thing happened this time as it did for the previous years. A great spell of domination, only to be finished off by Drogba, lucky goals and unstoppable free kicks. Despite the same thing happening for at least the last 3 Chelsea games, most Arsenal fans (including myself) convinced ourselves that we only lost because we have crucial injuries, the referee, bad defending and no top quality striker.
Whatever anyone says if we did have our full team out against them we would be in better stead, but would it still be enough to compete with Chelsea playing away tactics at the bridge. If anything, surely we would have been more attacking (with the likes of Fabregas over Diaby, Walcott over Eboue, Verminator over Squillaci, etc etc) as our first team players seem more likely to push up and try and get a goal, leaving us even more prone to Chelsea’s counter attacking, crap, football. However obviously there would be more quality on the pitch, and so we would be more likely to score, and if in the right mindset defend properly.
Another reason Arsenal fans tend to blame our losses against the big teams is that we have no top quality striker on the pitch. I can’t deny that if RvP was on against Chelsea we probably would have put the ball in the back of the net, but then again Chamakh brought with him a physical, ariel strength which we have not really seen for Arsenal before, especially against Chelsea. Also the last few defeats we have had against the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd, RVP has been in our team.
The referee didn’t really have a bad game against Chelsea, except the foul which we should have had before their flukey first goal, and the defending was pretty decent, as nothing could really have been done to prevent the two goals. However, despite all of this, the fact remains that Arsenal can genuinely say that as a team we have not improved from last season, and maybe even gone backwards. Even though Gallas was a grumpy sod he was quality in defence, and defiantly better than Kos and Squillaci. So what can Wenger do to turn our season around?
The most obvious answer would be to spend in January. But considering this is still 2-3 months away, we could be VERY behind the league leaders at that time, and chances are anyway, he isn’t going to spend big bucks in the winter. But IF we were to sign a player in the window what position could be improved?
Goalie, obviously, but we would need one who hasnt played in Europe yet?
Centre Back- he’s already brought in two this year so you cant see this happening.
Midfielder- with some balls… this is one that Arsenal fans keep going on about, but Song has done his job very well over the last season and a half (forgetting these last games) and if we are to bring in another holding mid, would he be played over Song, Ramsey, Wilshere, Diaby and Denilson, considering Wenger has stuck with these for years?
I think that the most important position we need to fill is a top quality, and i mean TOP quality striker, who will, guaranteed score week in week out- the Villas, the Patos etc etc. Surely this would be a great investment for us. Just think about how many of them great moments of build up play go wasted after Bentdner misses again and again and again. Obviously RvP is the striker we so desperately need, but we all know he is going to be out for at least a 1/3 of the season, every season.
Some people want Wenger’s head, which I 100% DISAGREE with. If he was to leave, who (realistically) would replace him? All the players he has brought up over the years and are starting to look like stars would be very unhappy, and possibly a lot of them would want to move away (Fabregas, Diaby, RvP, Walcott etc). He should be given until the end of this year to win a trophy, and okay, if he doesn’t then questions can start to be asked. Just think, if we can’t win trophies with Wenger, who all the players love, how would we win them without him. A lot of people are also calling for a sort out of the back room staff, but i dont really know what they do or who they are so i wont go into this.
So should we even bother trying to win the Premier League? Or go for the FA cup, Champions league or even the Carling cup. Surely we MUST play a full team against every team we get in the Carling Cup now- it is either ours or Man Utd’s cup. If both teams go out in this round i will cry- what a wasted opportunity. Please Mr Wenger take this cup seriously (hate to say it) but we MUST win something to shut everyone up! I dont see a point going for the Champions League as the same thing happens all the time- we cruise the group stage, go through 2 rounds and get beat by a massive club, OR we get robbed.
The FA Cup is also a possibility , but seeing as Chelsea are still in it we must try very hard in this, and it may just be out of our grasp. So the Premier League… It is way too early to say we are out of it, but most realistic Arsenal fans and all fans for that matter, have to admit defeat to it. If we are seven points behind after seven games, and we have dropped a good 6-8 points which we should have had if we want a title challenge the odds are packed against us. I can’t see the up and down season last year happening again. However we shouldn’t give up just yet- you never know!

2) If you compare chelsea’s team to ours, in every position, their player has higher market value. That says all. So we need to be lucky to get a result from them

and the defending was pretty decent, as nothing could really have been done to prevent the two goals.
There’s a stupid statement if ever I saw one. Every time we got near to the Chelsea goal area, it was flooded with blue shirts BUT every time that they got into our half of the pitch there were wide open spaces. Our attacking policy is alright up to a point, but you MUST leave at least 3 players behind apart from the goalie.

it’s not a question of winning trophies, it’s the matter of priorities. are you seriously saying that you’re content with the FA or league cup? you’re saying that we should like blood our young players through the league and play our top guns in the FA and league cup just to shut everybody else up? what kind of mindset is that?
for the past 5 years, arsenal had every single chance to win either the league, or the FA cup, but we all know that wenger’s method of bringing through youngsters via these two competitions. and you’re actually saying that for the past 5 years, you are actually satisfied if we’d won something instead of finishing 2nd or 3rd in the league not so long ago AND made it through to the semis of the champions league every season? if that’s the case then i’ll have to disagree with you. it’d always been a question of when, not if arsenal could win a trophy.
i support arsenal is not because of the amount of trophies they’d won or would’ve won. i support them because
1st, i believe in arsenal’s footballing philosophy which is youth and attacking football.
2nd, i believe that a football club could only spend money that itself had generated via it’s own revenue.
3rd, i believe that wenger is leaving behind a legacy of a football club that will not only be self-sustainable, but also boasting flowing attacking football and youth that will be the envy of other football clubs throughout europe for his successor.
again i believe that it’s not a matter or if, it’s a matter of when will arsenal win a trophy if not a major one. and because of that i’ll be content with it as long as arsenal longevity in football’s upper echelon is protected. if you want to win something just to shut your mates up, there are better candidates in the like of man city, real madrid and barcelona than arsenal in doing just that. cheers.

Decent article –
I think its time for wenger to take harsh decisions against some of his kids, Its not fun anymore to watch us play silk touch & pass football, PL is not that easy to win for a naive team.
Wenger install some of the old tacktics which we used to apply when we have viera,keown,henry… I know we dont have those kinds of players now, But surely they will learn these traits & if they master…unless you tought them some….If possible had them meet with our invinsibles…..i am sure keown,viera,bergkamp,henry,pires would like to give them some tips……Organize all defense pratice sessions our teams alreaady know how to attack (this will help us for knowing how to defend as a unit – we will be able to play against barca well if we learn this trick)
And please use some different strategies atleast just to confuse our opponents(i am damn sure if we had just kept the ball in chelsea for just to rotate & frustrate opponents they would have come out of their shell &it would be easy to attack on them – atleast chelsea would not had accepted draw in Bridge so why only we should go for full blown attack,) else its not far that every team will play like chelsea against us & i am sure it will be much more tougher then….
I know january window is much ahead, But we had the quality its there, just a change of strategy which will help us……
And yes we had faith but its stated to disappear slowly

wenger must include his strongest squad in the carling cup, man u aren’t playing great and they are being made favourite, if we play our strong team we’ll surely win the carling cup this season. we haven’t won anything for 6 yrs now, we’ve got to start from somewhere. He should not in anyway rest our big players in any cup competition we are in. If we get knocked in the carling cup with our strongest team then we can say it wasn’t meant to be rather than being knocked out with kids. The arsenal board have got to put some pressure on wenger cos the man is just too relaxed.

Arsenal should play some bully footbal. What I mean is that against teams playing the style of play like chelsea allowing you to keep possession for long periods whilst they sit back to pounce on you, Arsenal should pass the ball around and bully them like the matador against the bull until they are too frustrated and then bang, you hit them with lightning quick attack towards goal and finish them off. See how we did it with Braga. Chelsea will be crying like small kids trying to rob the ball off us. Arsenal have the skill to do this and show to them how much superior we are.

As a fellow writer for this site my first point is that Gallas isn’t and will never be better than Kozzer. I cant wait to face the spuds again when Gallas is playing and see what RVP & Chamakh do to him. As for the rest of your article not bad dude.

How cld u say u dnt care abt winning trophies..that’s irrational,dude.what about the players?u think they don’t want to win silverwares?players like RVp and fab hav spent years with us trophyless while their peers lift trophies for fun n u thnk it doesn’t matter as long as lord wenger is coach n we play beautiful footie?!no matter how much profit a club makes,it can never really successful without silverwares,period!

@ed, my main point being, i would rather have arsenal’s longevity as a top flight club protected than winning titles like barcelona who’s now in the red end of the balance sheet. to you it might be all about trophies, but to me i’ll stick with that 3 main reasons to why i support arsenal. and can you please quote my statement before regarding your statement of me being ignorant towards the club winning trophies? what i meant was i know that arsenal will win trophies, it’s just a matter or when, not if.

There are some seriously retarded people out there.
We’ve not had a great start to the season, Ill adimt, but we are only 7 points adrift, a total that we can surely claw back IF we play well. Also, what kind of fans are those who slate Wenger? Non-fans. before he came, Arsenal were a basically nobody club with few trophies and he turned it around and since then Arsenal fans have become greedy. Blaming Wenger for the downturn, every club has its ups and downs. Did you see Aston Vila fans slating Martin O’neil? They never won anything!!!!
Wenger is a great man and manager.

7 points back this early doesnt mean arsenal is done, long way to go,injuries have been rough so far but the last 2 matches could of easily been won by arsenal,i havent lost faith yet,if we lose the next couple matches with a healthy squad then faith will slowly be vanishing..long season boys

I really wonder what are some people made of!! Portsmouth won a cup where are they!!crystal palace won trophies where are they!! Do you think they have no fans!Dont they need to be where D GUNNERS are!!So those who need trophies more than anything else go to Chelski or Barce or Rubin karzan or Dortmund,or Elhilal extra.

No realistic number of signings will help now. We need some tactician other than Wenger to plan tactics and install discipline. Abandon the league, it’s between Chelsea and Manchester City. Abandon the CL. Go all-in for FA and Carling Cups.

Nice article. The fact is that whether u guyz like it or not, take it or leave it, arsenal fans need somethin to celebrate with. Trophy is the only thing that makes the fans happy. It is trophy that put smile on their (fans) faces bcoz we’re not part of the club’s profit. Let’s be realistic and be sincere to ourselves, those of u guyz that say u don’t give a damn whether there’s a silverware or not, how would celebrate as a gunner without a trophy?
