Should Arsenal let Emmanuel Frimpong go out on loan?

Posted on November 09, 2011 by admin

He may have only made six first team appearances for the Gunners, but Emmanuel Frimpong is already attracting interest from other Premier League teams looking to add some clout to their midfield.

Norwich City and Swansea City are among the main parties interested in the Ghanaian – who has chosen his African roots over his English upbringing for his national side – and it is rumoured that a loan deal until the end of the season could be an offer Wenger will soon be receiving from such clubs. Aaron Ramsey enjoyed similar loan spells at Cardiff and Nottingham Forest, while Wilshere spent time at Bolton, both deals giving the player bundles of experience and confidence to take back to the Emirates.

As one of the most consistent performers on the pitch for Arsenal, Alex Song is undoubtedly the first choice holding midfielder in the squad while Frimpong is his understudy. While showing slightly different styles, both players offer the same battling powerhouse figure in the centre of the park that allows the rest of the team to play their usual attacking football with far more ease.

However, Song has played the majority of games so far this season and so Wenger might, at some point, want to offer him a deserved break. The other defensive midfielder closest to the Gunners first team is Frenchman Francis Coquelin who, despite being named Man of the Match in the defeat to Spurs, has been limited to just six first team appearances in three years. Both are inexperienced but should the number of possible replacements for Song be halved to just one?

Frimpong may be off to the African Cup of Nations in January, but he would still be an excellent player to have available. The experience he will gain at Norwich or Swansea would be hugely beneficial but he is playing games at Arsenal – and not just in the Carling Cup.

Would it really be worth sending Frimpong out on loan?

  1. Travis Bickle says:

Yes, send him out on loan. I believe he would improve technically, and gain valuable experience.

If rumours of M’vila singing are true then in this position, Arsenal are very well covered with Song, M’vila and Frimpong.

Rumours of Podolski, Pato, and Jovetic abound….

He need exposure at the top level for consistency cos that’s where coquelin have an edge over him and we all know that lorient spell played a vital role for coquelin.so YES frimpong need that exposure to gain maturity to be a complete article.

  9. Adm says:

Arsenal currently have Coquelin who at the moment is better than Frimpong. Diaby too can play as a DM, so a loan deal might be the best thing for Frimpong where he needs more games to improve his tackling and dribbling and learns how to control his temper and under-pressure situation.

I think the problem is persuading him to leave.. it has come up before and he just says he never wants to play for another team other than arsenal.. good thing i suppose but i dont think he will go

The midfield will be very competitive once wilshere n diaby r back.It is better he goes out on loan to an above average club like fulham but if its to second division, let him stay and play in the curling cup .Also of thought is that he may join Ghana for the Africa cup of nations in jan

  12. Teck says:

Yes, send him on loan to gain some experience to add to his stability/maturity. He’s too raw and erratic. We have Conquelin cover for Song.

  13. Luke T. says:

A few people mentioned Diaby as a possible DM but I disagree. He may be of a similar height and build to Viera but he’s a completely different player. He’s an attacking player and therefore one that I like to see playing in at least a CMF role, if not AMF.

  14. Ryo Oxlade-Chamberlain says:

He needs playing time, he’s young and raw and the latter can only be overcome with playing time. I like Frimpong, he’s got potential but it will never be realised playing in the reserves, he needs regular PL or Championship experience.
Kid’s a beast and a Gooner if I’ve ever seen one, on par with Jack in that sense, he should be nurtured in a way beneficial both to player and club.

  16. KickuPthearsene says:

Keep him! He is quality, a strong boy, and all heart. If he stays he gets to learn from the best and grow in confidence. The best way to bring these players up is to have great team, let them watch a see how it’s done properly, then bleed them in with strength around them. Think about it, if you have TV5 and Merts, + Sanga in the back, and also Arteta in midfield, then you can play Frimpong as a DM. The team is still strong, but he gets to learn from the best around him. If he goes to another team, he misses out on AW wisdom, and most likely ends up playing with players who are not nearly as good as the players we have.

Furthermore, having Frimpong in our team gives us some depth. When he has played, he has played well (let’s forget his match against MU …. But what do you expect? It was the exact opposite to what I am suggesting we should do with him – we surround him with good players to build him, not throw him out on his own as we did against MU). So this all means we can give Song a rest when needed, and also not have to play him in all our competitions.

    I say keep him.

  17. Chinadinho Ajuzinho says:

Arsene Wenger shud sign either 2 of diz 3 DMFs. Ricardo Montolivo, Yann M’villa, Marouane Felliani then sign Jan Vertonghen, Lukasz Podolski/Alexsander Pato, Ahmed Musa, Eden Hazard + Mario Goetze.

  18. Big Gun says:

My initial answer would be no, but it also depends on how often Wenger will play him. I think the more exposure he gets currently the better for him and for us. A loan might not be a bad idea as if Song does get injured, Coquelin is more than capable of stepping up. Song and Pong will be out on national duty soon too, so Coquelin will be forced to play. Personally I think both Coquelin and Pong have great potential. Pong’s work rate is tremendous and he is no slouch on the ball. At the present time I think keeping him for now would be wise. Play him in Carling games and give him some exposure. Let’s see what Wenger does in Jan, afterwards perhaps a loan wouldn’t be a bad thing.

  19. Big Gun says:

@ Chinadinho Sorry but Wenger will probably only sign one of those players and it won’t be a DM, unless M’vila goes at a discount price. We have three DM atm…we are in more need of another world class defender and striker.

  20. Pian Pavregas says:

nobody going out. because we need that depth we’re crying for. we need frimpong n coquelin keep fighting over song’s spot. so, when the time come, i mean when song get injury or off form, they can step up to be a reliable cover. dont u think first team need someone to fight for in training ? if frimpong out on loan, there will be only coquelin and song fighting each other. what if they both get injured ?? did u expect djourou to cover the defender ?? suck my ball. djorou is the last thing i want to see in the middle of the match.

  21. James says:

He should go to some PL team during Jan for half a season loan and if he impresses which he bound to so then next year we would have an excellent cover with Song Frimpong and Coq
anyway i dont think Song is going for the Africa Nations Cup as Cameroon didnt qualify

@j.lo do u ever read the post 1st before yu comment coz all your posts are about buying this and that, seriously! Nway a loan spell will do him ggood coz diaby is also coming back guess that wud mean he wud be pushed down the pecking order, at least our depth is improving with these juniors wat a future team we have!!!! Gooner for life

  25. Scott says:

Guys… Song is not off to the AFN in Jan. its just Pong and Gerv. Morroco and cameroon didnt qualify so Chamak and Song are available. Song’s one of the best holding players in the league, if you are ever in doubt put him up for sale and check who in football will not make a bid and I’m not even talking Man Shitty.

Pong is also good but we must know how to use him. He will be useful against physical sides and championship teams. He will become a ‘Michael Essien’ that’s his growth path.

Diaby needs to move into the Rambo position… he is creative but loses the ball, just like Ramsey. @ least he can play Carling cup matches and give Rambo some rest

  27. The Don says:

he needs to be playing week in and out for a bit
like wilshare did and come back stronger and better.

but his are second choice at the momment if song get injoued we will be left with only coquilen

but if we do sign mvilla then am sure PONG will be shipped out on lone.

What’s the problem? Send him on loan with a clause that he can be returned, then if there are any injuries we can bring him back. Simples.
