Should Wenger promote Mannone to second-choice keeper?
With Szczesny already securing a firm hold on the number one spot of Arsenal, and Fabianski not happy as the second choice keeper, will the young Italian Mannone now get his chance to shine at Arsenal?
Signed from Atlanta in 2005, Vito Mannone has a lot of potential to be a great shot stopper in future. He is best known for his distribution of the ball and his calmness in goal. He was featuring regularly in the reserves squad and at times having a chance at the Carling Cup. When Arsenal were in a goalkeeping crisis in 2009 where both Almunia and Fabianski were out with injury, Mannone stepped up in the match at Craven Cottage and had a man of the match performance where he kept a clean sheet where Arsenal came away with a 1-0 victory.
However with Polish domination standing at the goalposts of Arsenal, Mannone’s route to be a first-choice goalkeeper for Arsenal would be a tough one. To succeed at a big club like Arsenal, Vito must be patient and wait for his chance. Keep training and push forward; Impress Arsene during training; When he is given a chance by Wenger to shine at the highest level, he must embrace it with open arms. He must grab it and show that his potential is there and he can perform to be at the top.
I feel that Mannone can maybe go out on loan for some much needed experience for himself even though he has announced he would prefer a longer term solution. With added experience and time, Mannone could be polished into a very bright gem and may be a top goalkeeper for Arsenal in time to come. Wenger certainly can’t let Fabianski, Almunia AND Mannone leave can he?

I’ve always wondered why Wenger didn’t replace FlappyHandski with this guy.. AW could have given him a chance when Almunia was having nightmares between the posts. He’s no Sczczesny but he’s no Fabianski either. Absolutely a second choice goalie for me.
Top Gooner!. Agree or not?:

Yes Mannone should be the number two because he has already been out on loan and very patient. Flappypansy does not share szczesny’s confidence and will never be the number one whilst szczesny is at the club so if he isnt happy let him go and promote vito.

He is not willing to be the second keeper, especially Sczczesny is so young. Loan to other team is not a long term solution. Like his calmness, hope he will be with us as a second goalkeeper. If not, a experienced and 32+ goal keeper is a good choice for us!

I am surprised why Mannone was never given a good run, especially after his much loved heroics against Fulham we Arsenal fans remember.
I can only assume that Wenger isn’t as confident in him as he was with Almunia and Fabianski. Wenger believed Fabianski would be a world class keeper. Mannone was never really mentioned.
From what I understand before Mannone got injured at Hull, he was playing very well for them last season.
I think Mannone deserves his chance but it looks like Arsene won’t give him one. Now with Szczensy No.1, I don’t think it would be unreasonable to say we should let him leave and get his 1st team elsewhere. It’s a shame though, because i held this guy in very high regard.
I think our No.2 should be experienced, between the age of 33-36.

he is a very good keeper but let wenger give him enough test first. With 3 world class keepers we are much saver and i think almunia’s time to go on and look for another club is now.

given Szczensy’s age, no goalkeeper under 35 really want to play for Arsenal.

i think everyone is being so harsh on fabianski, he started last season as number 1 and had a great start to the season and the stats support very few goals conceded and many clean sheets, shezeny only took his place through injury and all fabianskis goodwork is forgotten or rubbished.
we actually started to concede more and went of the rails after fabianskis departure so it makes it even more obsurd to mock him and put him down. fab is a great shot stopper (maybe better than shezeny) and when given a good run last season the rest of his game started to come together too. i just dont understand why people keep putting him down when he showed last season how good he can be, why are the fans at this club never happy unless theres a witch hunt on the go, someones always got to be getting abused for no apparent reason and its bollox!

szczesny
STARTS – 24
CONCEEDED – 25
CLEAN SHEETS – 9
fabianski
STARTS – 20
CONCEEDED – 22
CLEAN SHEETS – 6
the stats quite clearly show fabianski is right up there with szczesny and 99% of what is said about him is unfounded and untrue! and im sure the number of goals szczesny has already conceeded this season is a stat no keeper at any level would boast about even if allot of the goals were not directly his fault. fabianski is a good keeper and a worthy number 2 so lay off the lad.

well said toby!!!! agree with every word. we do seem to have some fickle fans. when we started a bit slow, everyone jumped down wengers throat and and wanted him out. were now up to fifth, in the last 16 of the CL, and were still not happy lol. wot else do the boys need to do to please u lot. come on guys get off our players backs and start praising them.

The real question is:
Who should fill 3rd spot when Fabianski leaves?
Shea or Martinez?

send him on loan to a premier league club for the next 6 months. Sell almunia and fabianski. Buy an experienced keeper as second choice. A keeper playing regularly for a small team will perform better than one sitting on the bench for a top 4 club. Love arsenal

almunia could do a job at barcelona he is better than pinto who will retire this year.also abdial is out of contract this summer.
so 4mill + almunia = abidal

YOU’D STILL JUST HAVE A SHIT KEEPER….
TIE UP DJOUROU AND THAT NO-MARK MERCENARY LITTLE SHIT ARSHAVIN
AND TOSS ALL 5 OF EM IN THE THAMES

Benny played well tonight. Ox tried but didn’t have enough of the ball.
In the end it did not matter but it’s a worry.
And another left back off injured. Oh well.

Mannone is decent, but if he wants to leave for 1st team then let him. We should ideally looking at an experience GK who is happy at being 2nd.

Ive been banging away for ages in here about how Djourou is a waste of space….and dosen’t deserve any kind of place with our team…
Swiss international…give me a break – about as useful as a cuckoo clock & a Toblerone
well i will just expect the usual negative response
or maybe i am the fool and should just buy myself a pair of the rose tinted glasses that you all wear…

After tonight, not convinced he can cover for Szczesny to be honest, altho the cover from sloppy squid, djourou or santos was abysmal.
To be honest, I expected more young guns to feature tonight. When I saw the team-sheet and saw the experience of the starting XI, I was convinced we’d a least play some good football if not take the game to the greeks and grab a win!!
For me, CHAMAKH and SQULLACI have had enough time to prove themselves, ARSHAVIN looks as if he just ‘can’t be arsed’ and is hardly a model for the lads coming through. Frankly, these 3 along with possibly DJOUROU (who has gone massively downhill this season!) are an embarrassment to the red and white of arsenal.
Other obvious deadweight:
- ALMUNIA (no-one even wants him!)
- DENILSON (failing to even get games in Brazil Serie A)
- BENDTNER (he’s just a massive length!)
That’s 7 players giving arsenal a bad name and although realistically you’ll only get a combined transfer of about 35m, I can’t help feel that we are wasting the wage budget!!

Tonight was shameful! Chamakh, Arshavin, Squid, Djouru, both Fabianski and Vito were terrible. The only players out there that showed any type of heart and urgency were Ox and Yosi. The Verminator had the look of a man playing with kids for the first time. I want the two hours I spent watching that match back!

From the result of defense, it tell that how big impact of Per have made in the back four. Some complaint he’s not the best but the different with and without him in the team are significant. From this display I know when Arsene fill Djuourou, Vert, Per and Santos in some occasion match the defense look strong, but just take out Per and replace by Squid with the same defender. The outcome is very poor, does this tell how bad is the squid or “squid and Djuourou” when Per not there for great positioning cover.
Concluded Per is great buy and a great defender who could does double job (Squid + Djuourou), now we need sagna back and put Djuourou in the bench to learn from the german master how to do double job with good positioning. With Sagna, Per, Kos, Vert the back 4 are super strong and full of experience
Sagna 186 app 5 Years ARS, 10 yrs & 308 app prof exp,32 Int cap
Kos 60 app 2 years ARS, 8 yrs & 203 app prof exp, 1 Int cap
Per 15 app 0.5 yrs ARS, 9 yrs & 243 app prof exp, 79 Int cap
Vert 64 app 3 yrs ARS, 9 yrs & 173 app prof exp, 33 Int cap
Def goal scoring ratio
Vert 21/173 = 12% each match
Sag 5/308 = 2%
Kos 14/203 = 7%
Per 19/243 = 8%
Probability of scoring 11 goal from def for full premium league which 5 will come with Vert !!! so Vert Score 2, 3 to come!!! Might be more in a more attacking option LB position

Looks like your question was answered during the game when Fabianski got injured. I dont know how serious the injury is but by default Mannone is our second choice. He had a difficult game yesterday and contributed to the second goal but mainly becuase of a poor defence in front of him. I hope AW will give him more game time during the season so that he builds confidence.

After yesterday’s game, neither Flappyhandski or Mannone should even be in the Arsenal squad. Both keepers lack communication and dominance in the goal area. That second goal Manonne let in was something I used to see in school. Unacceptable. These players are professionals earning hundreds of thousands a week to miss kick? Also he was well in his box to handle it. A serious lack of awareness.
Yes our defense is also very much to blame, but if that was Szczesny in goals, we would have probably only conceded 1.

@dave goon
agree with u dude, even that 7 deadweight cost of 35m or below, shud b worth it.even f wenger bring for 3-4 player to replace them, wud bring impact n useful to the squad than the 7 one.
fed up with almunia, fabianski, squid, denilson, bendtner, arshavin, chamakh!hd enough chances to prove bt yet player like arshavin that is lazy n show that to our young one.that is nt good.
djourou not consistent.
seeing barca youth, wow awesome! we jst lack at some department. striker, atacking midfielder which is the creative playmaker, defence n one xperience keeper.
terrible on that match,
striker-chamakh??
attacking mid-arshavin??
defence-djourou and squid??
keeper-fabianski and mannone(shud b given yet a chance,stil the 3rd choice)
replace fabianski with the sevilla keeper whivh is experience in the age 0f 30+ , gt a run of games such as that or perhaps cud b in carling cup n fa cup rotating with mannone.
dfences- squid shud jst going out this january’permanently, vertonghen as a replacement, djourou f stil nt being consistent,gt rid of him on the summer,he hv much time already to prove.
chamakh n arshavin- no comment,byebye.. podolski(koln) and goetze(dortmund)/erikson(ajax) wud b lovely.
perhaps we cn offer goetze a champs league footbal in the nxt half of nxt yr,with his price cud b in the reign of 25m?? + arshavin,bendtner,denilson..
COYG!!

@Toby…why do I feel nervous every time Fabianski gets the ball? His statistics might be on par with Szczesny, but I can tell you now those statistics do not speak for everything that goes on in a game. Fabianski has blundered a lot more than Szczesny, in terms of errors and lack of judgement in games, that were just lucky enough to not concede any goals. Where as with Szczesny, I feel ALOT more safe with. His defenders understand him and if a shot goes past him, you know it is a well place shot that no keeper could save. Fabianksi is not nearly as good as Szczesny, and last night was testament to that.

@Toby
This is the key point with Fabianski, the fans for some reason are not confident in him. This is something you can sense in the stadium. I am one of these people, he just doesn’t look the part. I know that means nothing, but in a strange way it does. When I look at Szczesny he looks confident in his manner and how he carries himself about and in turn this makes me feel confident that he will do the job. I have no idea if the Arsenal players have the same feeling, but this may explain to some extent why Fabianski never really hit it off.

Hello fellow gooners. Szczesny is a God – dam beast! I mean we go back to the 4-0 drumming of Wigan, and after the match he lead the chant of ‘Its Arsenal, Arsenal FC! ‘ Anyway, this thread isn’t about Woj, it’s about the dilemma of Mannone vs Flapianski. Now, I believe Fabianski is a good shot stopper, he just lacks the confidence needed to be one we can feel safe with between the sticks. As for Vito, I go back to the Fulham game from a couple of seasons back, he was brill! But I just don’t think he’s ready yet. God bless Szczesny, and let’s hope he stays fit and healthy for a long period. Elz.
