Squillaci on his way out of Arsenal – Samba in?
It is being reported in France that the Arsenal outcast defender Sebastien Squillaci is being given an escape route by Monaco, where he spent eight happy years before being snapped up by Lyon, where he won a Ligue 1 trophy.
He then moved to Spain with Sevilla for two years before arriving in London with Arsenal, where he has failed to make any impact whatsoever, and is considered to be a jinx by many Arsenal fans.
But he has no such stigma in Monaco and you can be sure that Arsene Wenger will not be looking for a large transfer fee to get him off the books, but what the fans will want to know urgently is if his space will be taken up by another defender, and if anyone could slot straight into the Arsenal team right now it is the Blackburn captain Christopher Samba.
Samba has obviously been talking to someone, because he has made it clear that he wants to leave Blackburn by handing in a transfer request yesterday.
He said: “I have today officially requested a transfer from Blackburn Rovers Football Club. I have personally informed the owners, manager and executives at the club that I want to leave in this transfer window. In my five years at Blackburn Rovers Football Club I have always given 100 per cent in every game I have played. I have had several opportunities to leave but I have always stayed. I have decided now is the right time for me to pursue a new challenge and I have asked the club to respect my decision and allow me to leave. I thank the fans for their support and I hope they feel I have served them and their club well.”
The big centre-back has also been linked with Tottenham and QPR, but Harry Redknapp has made it clear he won’t be buying a defender this January after foregoing the chance to bid for Gary Cahill, while I wonder if QPR would be a sufficiently big enough club to match Samba’s ambition to play in Europe.
With the news that both Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna will be returning to the Arsenal squad in the next week means that Wenger has two players that could play in the left-back position very shortly making a strong centre-back more important to shore up the heavily leaking Arsenal defence.
This may be just wishful thinking on my part, but it certainly mkes sense right now…..

Well, Squillaci can and should leave. However, I’m not sure Wenger would do any thing profitable with the proceeds of such likely sale. Certainly, Samba would be preferable to Per in the first team, he is much more flexible and has good goal scoring instincts (in my opinion).
However, with the likes of crooked Kroenke, Wenger shall be under no pressure to add strength to the squad by buying good-money worth players. I’m afraid, what Samba has done to liberate himself from Blackburn could be replicated in Arsenal soon. We don’t seem to be ambitious, as a club.

Samba at gunners would be a good investment for the club as we are defensively very vulnerable. The price doesn’t seem to be too high but I doubt we will do it. Not sure what’s going on in th4 board room and/or AW’s head but it feels as they have given up on making Arsenal relevant again, very sad. Nvertheless Gunners need to get much better if they want to negotiate sponsir deals or attract good players. It really fels as if the team and it’s leaders loose the plot completely. I guess the financial situation is much worse than what we are made to believe.

Does seem to add up but I don’t feel that it will happen in this transfer period. Squillaci has a salary of about 50,000 per week so for someone who contributes so little it would be great to get off the books and ensure players performing well such as RVP and Song can be tied down to long term contracts on a larger pay packets in order to retain them

Squid should go as soon as possible… I don’t think Samba is a wise investment… I see Kosc-Vermalean pairing best for us… With per and Miquel as replacements… Vertonghen in summer is a better option…

Finally the Squid is out. Miguel will be his replacement so don’t be surprised that Wenger doesn’t spend the peanuts he’ll get for the Squid.
If only the other straglers could go too. I reckon if Wenger can sell Arshavin and maybe Walcott then he will buy a creative mid or Striker in this transfer window.

Should have got Samba anyway instead of Merts. Merts is so clumsy, slow and laborious. He’s not physical enough and has caused us at least 5 goals this season. Vermalaen/ Samba would be an awesome combination, but we all know Wenger don’t we? He won’t do it!

Yes, statistically we have the worst back in BPL,even worst from bottom club but this come from early season debacle when we get maulling by Manure. after that slowly we get our act together but this not to say that our back are solid hell NO,from our observation the only solid defend team Now is MCiteh the rest are not better or worst than us,Cheslski,Manure,Tot are not better they just at par with us. Vermalen, Konsielky, Merteseker, Jouru are okay CB the problem lay on LeFt and right defender where both 1st and 2nd choice are out injured. What a horrible luck. The problem with Us Now is in at Midfield and outfield player(left&right) They are not doing enough, ball watching,No urgentcy, complacent,not closing the opponent forget about the creativity,clinicality,vision and so on. That why a good mobile team will cut our team to pieces.Player must attack together, defend together and alway chase/ go for any crossing made.

Wenger doesn’t have the ability to build a Successful league winning side any more. Other teams have caught us up, passed us and play us at our own type of game and do it better. We are a shadow of the fast flowing counter attacking passing team we use to be. We are an average passing (as the stats prove) premier league side now. Mr wenger helped to put us amongst the best in the world (As he didn’t build the defense, he inherited it) and now he will take it away. To stubborn to ask for help and Will be his own downfall. I’m sick and tired of him blaming the ref, when he is to blame.

It is clear that,,the secrete of a team to win the trophies,is when it have a mugic goalkeeper,and strong and speed fullbacks while other section being good.arsenal have only santos as a quality fullback,but he is injured.to me, due to the situation we have, we real need Samba.but i wonder about wenger,he always relying on injured players,beliving that they will get well, so no need of adding new fit players!! this is wrong,, if we need to be champions we must be full fit all the time,,and not waiting for injured players to get well. we have Champions leage, FA cup ,and premier leage,all we have is injured players,do u think we will make it?? when i look to premier leag to now,any team including Arsenal can be champion,Please wenger go for Samba now!!!

By signing Mertesacker Wenger has only added to his problems, it was a panic buy for political reasons nothing more, we needed (and still do) to sign Vertonghen but Wenger has categorically stated he will not be buying in January. So,that`s it.

I like samba… but it wont happen. In any case we must just give per some time, everyone is quickly to jump on the bandwagon and says he was a bad signing. Next season per will be a much better player, he just need time to adjust. Remember he didnt had a preseason (like the other new signings) so he will improve. And u must be good for something if u have over 60 GERMAN caps to ur name.
But the midfield is our big problem…we need to sign some quality!! And it will be better for us if arshavin breaks his leg, then AW cant play him, because at this moment it feels like AW feels obligated to play the lazy russian the whole time, WE HAVE AN OX, get rid of the russian.

apparently koscielny has the highest average tackles/Interceptions per game out of all defenders in the league. even vermaelen, vidic kompany… why would we want anyone else replacing him in starting 11. if anything we should get someone like samba for rotation and drop mertesacker to reserves. wont happen tho

If we played a 4411 formation that has served us so well in the past per and the full backs would not be struggling anywhere near as much. people are going on about samba as though he is some kind of athletic spring chicken when in truth he is as slow as mertesacker. sure his more of a unit but u know whats going to happen vermaelen gibbs and sagna will break down koscielny will get suspended and we will be faced with a back 4 of djourou mertesacker samba miquel. may as well stick the cones out.

The same people getting on Per’s back at the moment are also the same people who said we should get rid of Kos in his first season. You don’t get 70+ caps for Germany if your rubbish. The guy is class and will come good but he has had a total of four and a bit months with us and no pre-season.

Good news, but only a rumour. I have stated time and again that Samba would be my choice. He knows the English game and would fit in very well at the Arsenal. Adams was not versatile. Vidic is not versatile, Rio is not versatile, Kompany is not versatile, John Terry is not versatile. The best defenders are not versatile. They defend their position. Plain and simple.
Samba is a machine. He is totally what we need. He is much better than Per. He jumps for one thing and scores goals. he is technically much more gifted than people give him credit for. I for one would sign him on his 100% effort each game which is more than most of the Arsenal team collectively give. Baines is totally what we need. They can be bought, IF we pay!!!!
Samba is cheap!!! Wages not an issue. Isn’t at ANC. Not cup tied for CL. What more incentive do we need?
Chelsea wanted a defender in Cahill playing at Bolton who are in deep trouble. Chelsea pay and they get. Bolton could let him go for free in the summer in the hope that he could help keep them up. But money talks.

As long Kroenke+Wenger+Gazidis remain as decision maker in the clubs affair, nothing will change. These people are just after thier pockets and have no lofty ambition than for arsenal to remain an academy and feeder club where they can graze and raise youngsters for profits. May be it will take trophyless Ten years for some fans to realize the games this men are playing. That is why they do nothing unless the joke is too open for all to see. As usual they just buy some crap to mull the complaints and noise.. wait and see

We need committed Fan and shareholders like Usmanov and co to take over as chairman. This is vital for a complete overhaul of dead woods, misfits and jokers that dominate 80% of the team to stop the downturn and keep the few goods ones like RVP, Song, Koscienly,Sagna, Vermaleen and Scezny.

Samba is not what we require for long term… Per is as good as it gets for us being the 3rd choice CB…moreover I don’t want to prolong Miquels entry into first team by bringing Samba…

If, and I pray it’s true, that the Squid has someone who actually wants to buy him from us then sell him and laugh all the way to the bank. I’d be overjoyed if that spot in the team was filled by Vertonghen because he’s so versatile or Samba because he’s proven in the EPL, has size and strength we desperately need and he’s a leader! Either would be a very welcome addition to the squad.

Samba is a proven quality centre back. I’d say there is not a snow ball in hells chance of not Wenger buying him. He’d rather stick with useless young players than buy quality especially when that’s what the fans are calling for.

Per is one of those backdrops in hollywood movies that looks like a cement wall, but in actual fact is a flimsy piece of cardboard. Samba should have been bought last transfer window. We bought Per for his height and aerial dominance, which he hasn’t really shown any of from his time so far at Arsenal. Samba is strong, quick and can probably win more air balls than Per. He is also good on attack if needed. A good all round player and would fit in like a bomb with Kossie or Verm. But as usual Wenger will rather buy unproven 2nd division Arab players for peanuts to fix our ever looming defensive issues we have had for 3 seasons.
After watching Swansea, I would make a bid for Dyer and sell Walcott. What a good player he is. Is quick, can dribble and shoot. Walcott is speed and that is it. Dyer is far better than him.
My dream team that is still realistic:
Sczeszny/Fabianksi GK, (Sanga/Yennaris/Jenkinson RB) (Kossie/Samba/Per CB) (Verm, Santos, Miq LB) (Cissoko (Utility player either in defense or MF,) (Song/Coquelin DM), (Wilshere/Gotze/Rosicky/Arteta, AM) (Gerv/Miyaichi LW) (RvP, Suarez, Larsson or Demba Ba CF), AOC/Dyer RW)
Sell all the other crap and sub par players we are harboring and wasting money on (Almunia, Gibbs, Ramsey, Chamakh, Diaby, Walcott, Arshavin, Eastmond, Denilson, Bendnter, Djoure, Squillaci). This would free up funds for these better players to join us and strengthen our squad tremendously. I believe with a squad like this, without spending too much more, we can have a much better chance of winning silverware and dominating like we did 7 years ago.

Before we even think about buying Samba, this is what our back line should be: RB Sagna CB Vermaelen CB Mertesacker LB Koscielney.
Gibbs is supposed to be back soon as well apparently, so he can take over from Koscielney in LB, but Kosh should take Mertesacker’s place.
Then Samba comes in, pairs with Vermaelan, and we have a brick-wall defence.

@Lummy Yes I agree completely. Ramsey and even Arteta are not good enough. I was really hoping Ramsey had it in him, but he has had much exposure and has been disappointing. We cannot keep hoping these types of players will get better. For the amount of game time he has had, he should have been shining by now, but he is exactly as you mentioned, slow, clumsy and loses the ball too often. The only midfielders worth keeping are Song, Wilshere, Rosicky (has played very well lately), Coquelin and Frimpong. The rest (Ramsey, Denilson, Arteta, etc) are not good enough and are making this team mediocre. They add nothing dynamic and creative enough in the midfield.

It is very easy to criticise Ramsey but sadly that will not sort out the problem of Arsenal at present. What he is being asked to do with no players in space in front of him is an impossible task – Sunday he was asked to play deeper in Arteta’s role but with Benayoun who went missing supposedly in front of him. He had a bad game by his standards but still was unlucky to have a shot cleared off the line by Caulker and a very poweful header well held by Vorm. Fabregas used the overlapping fullbacks a lot to use either as decoys to pass to the wingers or to use the wingers as decoys for the fullbacks. This will always potentially pull one of the centrebacks out of position.This created space and this is where a midfield player looks to pass – a task which Fabregas became really expert at exploiting. It was obviously easy for Swansea to do this with Taylor Sinclair for instance working in tandem and Jo Allen and Brittain could find them with the added advantage that our fullbacks were rarely where they should have been.When you play with two wingers and no overlapping fullbacks the options are very limited to find a pass as many teams (not Swansea) defend against Arsenal with two banks of four. The space required is only there if a fullback pulls some of the defenders out of position. When Ramsay plays for Wales some of his passing is really good as he players like Taylor playing behind Bale and he will always find the pass which is why he was MOM in a losing Welsh side against England (unusual). Milner, Barry and Parker were the England players – not too bad I guess but he completely ouplayed them.
If the critics have their way he will no doubt go to Man U where he would find plenty of players overlapping to find and his friend Giggs would no doubt be very happy to facilitate this. I am sure of some of the experts on this forum who rubbish such potential will be absent if he comes back to haunt us for the next decade! Anyone can have bad games but if the team is dysfunctional it is very difficult to have a good game – please think team not individuals before you send a message to some of our best youngsters that they are not good enough – they could well be listening.

Meant Hooper as CF, not Larsson. Second top goalscorer in the Scottish league last year, top scorer this year so far. Otherwise Demba Ba would be a great asset up front.

Arsene should at is age know that he has to be very prolific in transfers, he should stop acting like snails in transfer windows, a manager who has witness numerous defeats in past and recent years, should know how to be active in transfer market. I think wenger should make a successful move for the strong center back Samba, and i am very sure he is not going to turn down the offer, with the quality of arsenals upcoming games.

sell Asharwin,Diaby (regularly injured),Squillaci, Djourou, Walcot is just not consistent .get Samba now.
Also bring back David Dein!! Do these players ever watch how Adams, Keown, Winterburn,Dixon Pires and Ljunberg used to perform week in week out!!why do Arsenal players pick up so many injuries?Gibbs especially.

The problem I see is Arsenal’s medical staff. They cant keep their starters on the pitch. How have they managed to be decimated in defense from so many injuries?Santos, Jenkinson,Vermarlen,Gibbs,Diaby,Wilshere,Sagna. (Sagna was the only “contact” injury!).. Spend the $$ and get some good physios for crying out loud!
And why they chose Arteta over PArker is still a mystery.Benayoun and Rosicky should leave this summer if they can find some players who are older than 19 although OxChamberlain and Coquelin may yet make it into the starting lineup with more seasoning.Gervinho and Theo with all that pace should be killing people!!someone needs to show them how to actually put the damn ball in the back of the net!!Look at a team like Spurs…they have 5 legit scorers, City 6, Manure 5,Chelsea 4! Arsenal? ONE!!!!! How the hell can they compete?
That said, with Wilshere, Sagna and Vermarlen returning I think the Defense will solidify. And that is critical!! Losses to Fuham and Swans shows this team is acting like last years and playing with an “afraid to lose” attitude!!!!! Samba would be a nice add no doubt as an enforcer, better than Mert, and would pair well with Kos. Could move Vermarlen to the LB for the short term and Sagna back at RB. Wilshere will need time but I think he will be better than Arteta or Ramsey.Plus he gives them “balls” in the midfield! Still he is not the creator they need and until they get a CM with the class of Fabregas or Nasri, they will be in trouble. What they need is someone like Schneider from Inter but that is unlikely. . Wenger loves French guys so I am sure he is looking in LALigue.MAybe a Pastore from PSG or Gourcuff.
They also need a quality striker who can score. I know they are looking at several and they need to splash the cash to get someone. God forbid if RVP gets hurt…they will be lucky to stay in Top10.For crying out loud how did Newcastle get Demba Ba anyway??????
I would sell Squid, Arshavin,and Diaby asap and get some $$.They are surplus to requirements and would look good in a West Ham jersey
Anyway, it is unlikely Arsenal will get into CL this year unless they pick up impact players in January.They cannot afford anymore losses to inferior Clubs! If AW sits on his hands and thinks this squad is “good enough”, then I know there are huge $$ issues at Emirates and maybe there is no chance for success…sad to see them become a “selling” Club in the future if thats the case.
Still a lineup of Sczezny, Vermarlen, Sagna, Samba,Koscielny, Song,Wilshere ,Gervinho,Walcott,
Ramsey/Arteta and RVP isnt bad…its just not good enough to compete with Spurs or City and even MAnure and Blues…
Still I love the Gunners and recognize AW for what he is…a manager who can teach young talent to play at a high level…just not the highest…Of course if Xavi,Iniesta and Messi were available…
