Sunu scores winner against Chelsea as Derby close in on loan deal

Posted on February 16, 2010 by admin

The Arsenal reserve striker Gilles Sunu teamed up with Jay Emmanuel Thomas and Luke Freeman to score the winner in last nights reserve League match at Chelsea. The win puts Arsenal one point clear at the top of the Reserves South League table and is their third away win in a row.

Chelsea put out a strong team including Gael Kakuta, Nemanja Matic and Fabio Borini, and threatened the Arsenal goal a few times in the first half, but Luke Freeman broke the deadlock six minutes before half time, fed by Jay Emmanuel Thomas after a great run.

Thomas again broke down the right wing for the second goal 15 minutes from time. He again passed to Freeman, but this time he teed it up for Sunu who put it in the net via a deflection.

Chelsea rallied hard and scored immediately through Matic, and pressed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, but couldn’t get the breakthrough.

Meanwhile Derby manager Nigel Clough revealed that he is trying to get Sunu on loan for the rest of the season, and is waiting for a reply from Arsene Wenger.

“We are still working and waiting to hear from Arsenal on that,” said Clough.

“We would certainly like him in if we could, and if we could get him in before Saturday then even better.”
