SVGunner: Leave Ramsey alone – And Arsenal fans must pull together!

Posted on February 02, 2012 by admin

Greetings all. It has been quite some time since my last post so, naturally, a number of topics have arose, which I would like to comment on. However, this could take several thousand words so I’ll try to be selective and condense.

There is an obvious topic to start on; and that is, obviously, the Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain substitution which allegedly cost us the match against Manchester United…

I agree that it cost us the match. Simple. When the Ox was on the pitch, he gave us cutting edge and we seemed to be a threat when we went forward. After the substitution, United regained their first half impetus and, unfortunately, put us to the sword. I disagree, however, with the allegations that it was totally Wenger’s fault. At first, it seemed a ludicrous decision; now, I have read numerous reports that the Ox had a calf strain and had, in fact, signalled to come off. If this was indeed the case, the decision was correct (in my honest opinion) as we don’t want a scenario like the Wilshere debacle – in which the Ox plays through pain on adrenaline and then gets injured for several months.

Here is my reason…listen to me, Arsenal fans; in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain we have the potential for a truly top class player. He possesses all of the characteristics we love and opponents hate; passion, talent and level-headedness are all there in equal measure. He has the ability to drive at full-backs, shoot from distance and is a neat finisher too. However, we must realise he is not the finished article yet. Now, I’m no football expert and do not claim to be, but I believe he needs to acclimatise to our passing game as well as to the pace and energy of the top level. He has a good touch on him so the passing will come, but I think that the speed and physicality of the Premier League is a level above what he was used to before. We need to ease him into the first team, without putting too much pressure on him and, in a year or two, we’ll have ourselves a, dare I say it…Pires Mark II?

I have, I admit, been proved wrong by one Aaron Ramsey. In an earlier article, I said that he was not a Cesc type player with cute dinks and beautiful passes but was, rather, a box-to-box midfielder in the Lampard mould. However, I have recently realised that, while he is like Lampard in many ways (strong shot, superb engine, traditional centre midfielder) he can, in fact, be much more than that. He has appeared to gradually gain confidence in expressing his creative flair; flicks and chipped balls have become much more common from him. His performance against Leeds particularly stands out. For this reason, I cannot fathom the criticism of him. I believe that much of the criticism is borne out of over expectation; we, subconsciously, expected him to fill Cesc’s size 20 boots. Let’s make it clear, he would have to be an unbelievable player to equal Cesc. He, perhaps, can be that player, but not quite yet, and especially not straight after an injury such as he endured.

It may surprise some to know that our midfield trio, which includes Ramsey, are all in the top 10 passers of the EPL. Yaya Toure tops the list and the outstanding Arteta comes in a close second. Ramsey comes in fifth and Song ninth. Furthermore, the average positions for our midfield three are all at the half –way line or ahead, showing that the passing is attack minded. For this reason, when an idiot ‘pundit’ tells you that Arsenal’s passing game is not what it was, snort in derision and move on.

One last point which I would like to make is one concerning the fans. I have come to realise that there is too much conflict between Arsenal fans, some of which I take responsibility for. While we all have different opinions about the club, our aims are the same: we all want Arsenal to succeed.

It is one thing for a club to be divided between staff and fans, but it is even worse when the fans themselves are in fighting. For this reason, I ask all fans to put aside dispute and not waste energy attacking each other when it is difficult enough fending off the Spuds and United taunts.

To conclude, I would like to point out that there is still potential in this season. We can still win the FA Cup and the Champions League, while also qualifying for the Champions League next year. Remember that, in the 05/06 season, we would have finished 5th (but for some food poisoned Spuds) and yet we still made the Champions League Final, losing only to two late Barca goals.

You never know, we could be in for a cracker. Keep the faith Gooners.

Sorry my friend, regardless of what you say, only results matter. Do not waste your time trying to convince people cos only results can do that.
When Wenger was producing the goods, you never used to read such comments. I think that Arsenal fans are the most patient fans in the world. Even Ferguson wouldn’t survive at United what Wenger is getting away with at Arsenal.
Put it this way, if suddenly Wenger had a problem (health or whatever) that prevents him from carrying on as a Manager, would the club cease to exist or will it cease to be the graet Arsenal? The club has certainly got to be bigger than the man.
You do not charge people the highest ticket prices in the game worldwide and demand that they be happy putting up with crap week in week out in these harsh economic times.
Do not be a dictator, the least you can do is let people vent their frustrations and shut up until results start going yours or Wenger’s way. We’re talking 6 or 7 years of same inept polices and people only started calling for his head now. Very patient fans indeed!

Agreed long way to go and positives to look at but let’s not delude ourselves. We are currently 7th, we need to make up 5 points on Chelsea to get into 4th, we haven’t won the games that should be easy like Swansea, Fullham and Bolton so we need to win the more difficult ones and hope Chelsea and the rest screw up.
Champions league, I seriously doubt we’ll win that and FA cup could be a possibility.
I agree with the rest about Ox and Ramsey but I blame Wenger for not finding a replacement for Fab and Nasri.
Sorry to say that 05/06 we had more than one world class player in our team.

Good advise, lets be patient. The more we critisize individual player the more he will lose confidence hence under perform. We need to incourage them e.g last night match Ramsey costed us a lot he needs to improve in his shooting power/ accuracy. Same to OX they were kicking off target. We were lucky not to be penalised in last minute penalty. Gibbs come up we need Verm on center defence.

  9. Steve of Chiang Mai says:

The problem with some of the Gunners fans is they are short sighted. I have said often they live , not for the best interests of the club, but for bragging rights over their equally infantile and unintelligent mates down the pub.

Secondly this short sightedness has allowed many, whether for ethnocentric reasons or out of frustration, to become polarised around the managers position. “Hate Wenger” or “Wenger out” mentality often poisons the thinking of many fans and seriously impairing their ability to think rationally, to the point of some even wanting Arsenal to lose to “teach Wenger a lesson”. It is amazing some of the suggestion made in comments as to the managers motives, suggesting the board and the manager of pocketing the funds from player sales rather than spending it. Don’t they understand Arsenal FC is a public company and that stuff is illegal.

It’s like saying I love Arsenal but I hate London. I love Arsenal, but I hate red and white. Arsenal is in London and this wont change. At the moment Arsene is the manager, and this won’t change before the end of the season at the earliest. To be honest, after reading some of the vitriol the only conclusion is they hate the manager more than they love the club.

Seriously it’s like hating your girlfriends best friend…. you either learn to live with the situation or get another girlfriend! Cause mate she wont dump her lifelong for you, you numpty not now not ever! I can’t believe some people say they will teach the club a lesson by not renewing their membership…. like a club with a waiting list will care!

But short of a lobotomy I can’t see too much changing…..the toys will still be tossed, the dummies spat and the feet stamped as the children cry “Why cant I have a new goal keeper, centre-back or striker.(Note the progression, as we don’t hear much about the first two since the rise of Szceszny, Kolscielny and the fitness of Vermaulen. Like the child craving the new toy, parents your solid reasoning will never stem the sobbing.

One thing for certain is the likes of the Hazzards, the Goertz’s and the Podolski’s are hardly going to be rushing over to bust their boilers for a bunch of clowns that boo them at half time. Funny, but I have read of several players who come to Arsenal to be managed by Wenger (like him or no this is undeniable fact) but I am yet to read one report of a player in the last 5 years coming because of our excellent supporter base!

  10. Emery says:

Im afraid theres a number of points that I disagree with in this post, however I do believe that Arsenal fans should stay unified and Wenger is the right man for the job, I mean everytime someone says he should go and I ask who for they either come up with no answer or stupid ones, such as Martin O’Neil :/

As for the substitution that was made, well I still beleive he should have stayed on, I cant see him having had an injury otherwise the cameras would have picked up him signalling to come off or Wenger would have said that, obviously if he was then fair enough but I still wouldnt have brought on Arshavin so I still think it was a bad sub personally.

Ramsey for me is sooo frustrating but you do have to remember he is still young, he had a horific injury which many players would struggle to come back from and is actually the captain of Wales so he has a massive ammount of pressure on him. I dont see him having this beast of a shot personally, ive never witnessed that and he comes out with atleast one backheel/flick every game, something me and my mate picked up on ages ago, half the time though they dont come off and it becomes increasingly annoying. Still with time and rotation I beleive he can be a top player and could end up being a very key player for Arsenal.

With regards to Arsenal’s passing game not being there and our midfield in the top ten etc. the simple conclusion is, its not. We dont play lovely one touch any more, we play very similar to Chelsea, I cant remember the last goal we scored which was a free flowing attack with one touch passes that resulted in a goal, it just doesnt happen. The annoying thing is it use to be will Arsenal fans prefer us to grind out results instead and actually win something, well it seems our passing game has slowly died out yet we still dont grind out results :S

Im not going to sit here and lie, I genuinely dont beleive the CL is a possible trophy for us, unless we have everyone available and other teams we play suffer injurys I cant see it happening, I think we will struggle against AC personally, and Ibra could be an extremley difficult customer, espicially if Mertesacker is at CB, theres no way he can cope with Ibra’s strength and heading ability plus Pato’s pace and skill :/
FA Cup could happen but again it will be difficult, I dont think theres any easy games in the cup as anything can always happen, however I have a lot more belief in that competition than the CL however.

One thing is for sure and that is Wenger is the right man for the job, for a start ive seen people say sack Wenger now, that has to be the worst decision ever. But beyond that people saying he should atleast go at the end of the season, yet no one seems to know who would replace him, personally I would only have Mourinho, Guardiola or Huddink instead of him and I dont think we will get any of them :/

There is no point backing Ramsey anymore, if he has had too mna games to play lately that is affecting his performance he should let the manager know. As for Walcott, everything about him is just negative. You’re through on goal, round the keeper and put the ball in. But obviously he has been in great scoring form lately and thought it would be cool to put it between the keepers legs. He doesn’t even show a hint of dissapointment when he misses chances like that and that for me shows his care free, laid back atitude that we could do without. I just can’t believe Wenger, that he has let Walcott feature in all but 1 league game this season. Even at a lower league team or a team in an entire different division, he wouldn’t have played 22/23 league games.

i think your article is total rubbish, what you are saying is we have to except what we are seeing !! when we pay good money to watch this crap i want to see better, our team is not a top 4 finish anymore we are mid table toto possibly relegation material, wengers philosophy is stale it has never worked and will not work, kroenke should leave and should never have been allowed to take over this club what they call success is staying in the prem, they have taken this club backwards, if you see our performance over the last six years you will see how badly this team has deterioted, they sell our best players and bring in kids, and lets be honest how many of these kids have turned out to be real talent, not many, unfourtunately if a team does not win things then fans will stop going to matches when their own club starts claiming they want success on the pitch and you watch this fans get their own pre-conceived ideas, that they are trying to pull the wool over the supporters eyes, unfourtunately we can see quite clearly what is going on, and when you get the idiot gazidis claiming man city are jealous of us !! what planet does he live on, and then you got hill wood saying we dont need champions league football, but wenger said it would be a catastrophe, seems to be a conflict between what is said between manager and board, the other question that should be asked where is the money gone from the fabregas sale, nasri, clichy? and is their really money their, they have shown as a club that buying kids they want to sell them, we have become a feeder club for barcelona, man city and to be honest i want wenger to leave and to take this lousey board with him they have destroyed this club, and the team, performances speak volumes and lets be honest to be beat by the likes of fulham, swansea, blackburn, clearly shows where this team is going, and it does not look good, so if you want to write lousey articles remember other supporters dont like what they are seeing and it is about time we stood up at this money grabbing board

Sorry people but if you really believe that Ramsey passes sideways and backwards you are watching different games.
I will accept the fact that Ramsey will give the possession away sometimes (happened only once last night) but that is only because we do not have anyone else to try and play a through ball.
He does more running than any other player on the team and you can go and check if you disagree.
I rate players on their effort as well as what they deliver and can only give credit to the guy who at 21 years old and with almost a year out because of a terrible injury is gradually maturing into a great midfielder.
Have you ever thought what we might be like with two strikers instead of RVP on his own every single bloody game?

  27. Naz says:

Really well written article if I may say. Couple of things I have to say. I agree as Arsenal Fans we tend to argue among ourselves to often. We as fans need to get behind our team look at the Villa game last night the fans made a huge difference. I totally understand all our frustration but booing is not help our team at all, lets all get behind the players.

I have three comments to make with regards to Ox, Ramsey and Bolton. Ox once again showed he is better then Theo and soon Ox will be taking Theo’s place in the England team. Ramsey is frustrating to watch at times but I have to give the guy his credit he tries unlike Arshavin and Theo now to Bolton for the life me I cant understand why we let Ryo go to them after the Cahill saga, when they public humiliated us in the summer and now we loan our player to them please. I would have preferred we kept him at Arsenal.

Finally, I will get a lot of stick for this but Wenger has taken a lot of the blame for this season and some rightly as he has gotten things wrong but I truly believe that signings or lack of signings blames should go to Ivan and the board. Just look at the recent statement by Ivan “We don’t buy stars , we make them”. That should give you an idea of the mentality of the boardroom. Also hand on my heart I do not believe that Arsene get access to the money that is quoted on papers by Ivan or Hill-Wood. If you follow the news you would have heard how Stan is in the process of purchasing another Sporting club in America.

Food for thought hey so, please can we start supporting our players for once.

You guys saying rosicky is better than Ramsey, but when rosicky came on for Ramsey we never threatened to score again! His effort is matched by no one on the team. He makes runs and tries to make forward passes, arteta doesn’t do that and song only attempts forward passes. He just doesn’t have a good connection with arteta so thats why he tries doing it on his own.

Denilson also had one of the pass rates when he was wearing an Arsenal shirt. Mull over that for a second. If you make 100% pass completion of 100 passes but none of them result in a goal then your stats look good but you did nothing but pass it to the guy beside you 100 times. sure you can boast the best passing rate but it did nothing really to contribute to a goal scoring opportunity. As a “creative midfielder” you should essentially have the touch before the striker scores. Ramsey’s assist rate is dismal.

I say this now and I said this earlier many times, Ramsey is not a creative mid-field player and Arsenal could not afford to play him at this crucial time. He is not a good passer of the ball, he could not defend, he loses the ball regularly in dangerous positions. Rosicky on the other hand is a seasoned player who is a proven play maker, whom defenders fear and attack players on his side admire.
Another area that needs attention is Artetas position. He is better ball handler that Ramsey but his game is focused on returning the game to his half, if you notice his game he prefer to face his goal for the majority portion of the game than facing the opponents goal and when you combine Arteta with Ramsey in the midfield hell break loose.
Start Rosicky in place of Ramsey and play Couqlin in place of Arteta, allow Song to push forward and help Rosick, give Park a chance in place of Willcott, I guaranty you these changes will give us an excellent team. On top of that when Gervinho returns, AOX and Gervinho will cover the front wings and RVP will do his thing from the center forward position. I wish Wenger had the guts to try something like this for a change and train the goalies to clear their line and play it safe.

I’m so sick of people whining about us losing games and our players not performing, get over it. It’s tough times yes. We will have to still find balance in our squad, we have just got injured players back and lost gervinho to AFC, so the squad will have to find its poise.

On the Bolton game, we did have opportunities, rvp 2 wood works and Walcott should have finished, but hey we were unlucky, just be thankful we have a defence now and the choice of Henry, coqulien, rosicky ans benayoun on the bench, and the return of arteta and Sanga.

Get with it people and get a grip, we are a great quality team, just lacking judgment when it counts.

    blahblahblah @svgunner. if wenger knws these lad ox cud be an exciting young talent which he is! he bring gervinho to replace nasri which i think wud b great in few yrs than cashri. bt why he keeps with arshavin??n mr.walcrap stays in the pitch rather than the ox?nt necessary play him evry match like wilshere does last yr. he shud bring the any one of goetze or hazard in the summer earlier n dnt wait til the last window. so we cn end with these with these winger for this season;

    hazard/goetze, gervinho, ox-chambo, walcrap.

as for rambo,im sick hearing bout these back from injury.bad injury. what?u frgt mentioning bout he keep spinning around. fall evrytime. even when he one on one with a keeper. he keep sliding on to the ball like on the skating field. flicking ball around like a useles. bt no vision.poor composure. keep losing the ball. all he have is?? face?? n? ? boring footballer. walcrap n ramshit is jst a squad player. belong to the bench. shud learn more. bring erikson from ajax.see that guy. similar to fabregas.good vision. watch him n u ol wud knw what i meant. n also hazard or goetze to tke walcrap place. arshavin byebye next summer. hope u dnt lose the champs league n atleast bring one trophy mr.wenger. if nt ur doom. bring dein n usmanov back. kroenky is a must byebye. also gazidis. hil wood??a must too. trio dumba**
