In the Arsenal press conference today ahead of the north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday, Arsene Wenger was thrown plenty of questions about the transfer business this summer. It is hardly surprising that the subject came up, given the fact that out close neighbours and rivals have outspent even Manchester City this summer, while we have yet to open the chequebook.
Arsenal in for Mbia? by Stefan
This transfer rumour should be good for a laugh. Arsenal are apparently the favourites to `land` QPR `star` Stephan Mbia this summer after they suffered relegation and their top earners are being moved on as quickly as possible, a report in today’s Daily Star has claimed.
Arsenal do need a defensive midfielder but the favourites for that honour are Lars Bender and Marouane Fellaini. Arsenal apparently made a £20 million bid for Bender that was rejected but that proves that the club aren’t interested in Mbia. If those targets are missed, there are Capoue, Kondogbia and about a hundred other players we would be looking at first.
Let’s Play Moneyball by NS
Moneyball (2011), as some of you might know, is a Hollywood movie starring Brad Pitt based upon the true story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated analysis to acquire new players (Courtesy IMDB). I consider Arsenal to be in the same situation.
It seems as if Arsenal Football Club is in danger of turning into the French national team, especially if these two midfielders get their wish and a transfer to the Emirates this summer. Etienne Capoue from Toulouse and Younes Belhanda from Montpellier are keen to come to the English Premier League, and it does not take a rocket scientist to guess which would be their team of choice.
Does Ramsey know something we don’t? by AH
Aaron Ramsey has been speaking to the media a lot recently about Arsenal’s ambitions and things going on at the club, but he also spoke about one player who has been consistently linked with the Gunners since the mid-season.
The player in question is Celtic’s Victor Wanyama, who is a midfielder with all-round qualities, although he acts best in a defensive midfield role. Wanyama has been linked with a number of top clubs across Europe, including a few in England alone, and out of all of them, Arsenal seem to be the most interested according to reports.
If there is an element of truth to all the transfer rumours you hear involving Arsenal, then Arsene Wenger’s list of targets must be as thick as the Yellow Pages. Well it looks like Le Prof can cross one of those names off his list today, as the talented and powerful defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama has revealed his intention of staying at Celtic.
21-year old Wanyama is a real powerhouse in the centre of the pitch and his performances this season, especially in the Champions League, have attracted a lot of interest. Both Arsenal and Manchester United have had scouts in Glasgow to watch him and it has been heavily rumoured that he would be moving on at the end of this season.
There is a lot of transfer rumours around concerning Arsenal at the moment, but none of them seem to be good for us! For starters the Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue, who has been touted as Arsene Wenger’s top target this summer, has now come out and announced that his dream move would be to the French Champions Paris Saint Germain, and not only that, but he says they are already in talks about the move.
He said: “There have been contacts with Paris Saint-Germain this year. I’m a big fan of PSG and to play there would be a dream.”
The summer transfer window does not open for a good few weeks yet, and the players that Arsenal are seriously targeting may be different depending on whether we finish in the Champions League or Europa League places, but you can bet that Arsene Wenger, his scouts and the backroom staff are working on the signings that they want to make.
Most Arsenal fans, when asked what what position most needs strengthening, will scream the answer defensive midfielder, the same as last summer! You never know, we might actually buy one rather than selling one this time. Two of the candidates often linked with the Gunners in the media are Etienne Capoue from Toulouse and Jeremy Toulalan from Malaga. The latest rumours suggest that Arsenal will face stiff competition for either of these players.
As the season progresses there are more and more Arsenal transfer rumours appearing in the papers, and today’s Mail is suggesting that the Gunners are going to try again for Dortmund’s Mario Gotze this summer.
They claim that the 20 year-old, who is happily known as the German Jack Wilshere, has a £30m buyout clause at Dortmund, and they believe that Wenger is willing to double his current record signing to build a super young side to make Arsenal a force for many years to come.
It seems as if Abou Diaby’s career at Arsenal is never going to fulfill it’s early promise, after the French midfielder has picked up another injury that will keep him on the sidelines for an extended period of time.
The official Arsenal website has revealed that Diaby has injured his left knee while training yesterday, and the medical tests have shown that he tore an anterior cruciate ligament. The 26-year old will have to undergo an operation to fix the problem, and he is not likely to be back in action for around nine months.
The General and the Finisher by Chunners
Luca Toni has told Stevan Jovetic to join a real ‘top club’ rather than Arsenal. Well, that hurt, Luca.
The first half of Arsene Wenger’s reign at Arsenal raised our expectations to such an extent that the past eight years can be described as somewhat of a failure. Coincidentally, Wenger’s trophy-laden years at Arsenal occurred with the presence of another man running the show on the field, our midfield general – Patrick Vieira!
There is a story in the papers today about the possibility of Arsenal making a summer move for the 18-year old Nathaniel Chalobah. The defensively minded midfielder is currently on loan at Watford until the end of the season, and is hoping to travel with the England under 21 squad ti Israel for the European Championships this summer.
