Arsenal lost William Gallas, Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and Phillipe Senderos this summer, thus decimating their defensive cover, but Arsene Wenger brought in Laurent Koscielny to partner Thomas Vermaelen, and it was hoped that Joham Djourou would be the number one back-up in case either of the main defenders got injured.

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is commentating for a French TV station at the World Cup, but he insists that negotiations are ongoing and there will be a defensive signing before the tournament ends.
With William Gallas looking for a better contract elsewhere, and Phillipe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre out-of-contract too, and Sol Campbell seemingly decided to move to Celtic next year, I imagine that Wenger will be looking for more than one defender!
