Van Persie’s barren spell highlights Arsenal’s need for a backup striker 44

Why RVP finds himself in this drought? A Guest Post from Armoury Square

Van Persie’s form is worrying for me. But how much can you ask from a man who has done so much in one season. He is the only reason Arsenal are even competing for a Champions League position after their disastrous start to this season..

Currently the man stands with 1 goal in his last 7 games. That too, was from a penalty. A classy penalty none the less. He is certainly a nominee and a favourite to land the PFA award this year. But that will go to him more for his impact as a player than even his goals.

Who should Wenger play (or rest) against Sunderland? 65

Posted on February 09, 2012 by admin

Arsenal are now just three points behind Chelsea in the coveted fourth place in the Premiership, so a win is an absolute must this weekend at Sunderland, but with the (perhaps more important?) Champions League tie against AC Milan coming up in midweek, Wenger will be considering his team selection very carefully.

Wenger has so far avoided resting Robin van Persie, but as he has Thierry Henry, Ju-Young Park and the now-returned Marouane Chamakh in the squad, perhaps it may be prudent to make sure that the Dutch international doesn’t get injured this weekend.

Should Wenger rest Van Persie against Blackburn? (with no Samba!) 33

Posted on February 03, 2012 by admin

There are rumours that Arsene Wenger is considering giving Robin Van Persie a break this weekend against Blackburn to try and freshen him up for the three upcoming away games against Sunderland, AC Milan and (probably) Sunderland again.

Van Persie has scored 21 goals in 23 games this season, but his shooting hasn’t been quite so accurate recently (except for penalties!) and it is said that Wenger believes it may be a good chance to give him a rest now.

Thierry Henry has not had much chance to make an impact since his loan deal started and this may be a great opportunity to show the Arsenal fans that he still has what it takes make an impact in the Premiership.

Wenger set to rest players ahead of Bolton in midweek 48

Posted on January 28, 2012 by admin

Arsene Wenger is preparing his Arsenal team to face Aston Villa in tomorrows FA Cup tie, but for the second time this week he has admitted that the midweek game against Bolton in the League is far more important in his eyes.

“I have always told you exactly the same, the priority is be in the top four,” Wenger said yesterday. “In recent years I felt that we produced always the consistency at the top, top level and it is not enough for some people maybe, but for me that is the brand of a top level club – consistency in the top four.’

Van Persie needs a rest – but is now really the right time? 17

Posted on October 22, 2011 by admin

Arsène Wenger has conceded that he will have to give free-scoring Robin Van Persie a break at some stage before the end of the year, the striker having played 16 games so far this campaign.

Of course, burnout like that seen with Jack Wilshere last season is the last thing that Wenger wants, with the Dutchman having contributed a colossal 27 goals in his last 33 games. However, with this fine run not looking like ending any time soon, can he not just rest between games?

Wenger tells England why Wilshere should NOT play for U21s 1

Posted on April 16, 2011 by admin

Arsene Wenger is still adamant that Jack Wilshere should not play for the England U21s in the European Championships this summer, and stesses that, if he does, then he is unlikely to be available for the first month of next season.

This means that he will not only miss important games for Arsenal, but also the Euro2012 Qualifier against Bulgaria for the England senior team. Wenger said: “Where I stand on it all is that it would be better for him not to play for the Under-21s,” said Wenger.

“We will accept the decision of the FA but don’t forget that we start the season on August 13.

Wenger – Arshavin needs a rest, and Clichy and RVP aren’t fit 9

Posted on November 22, 2010 by admin

The Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has taken a slightly weakened squad to Portugal for the Champions League match tomorrow night against Braga. He has decided to leave Andrei Arshavin back in Londn for another rest after the little Russian played for his country in midweek.

“Arshavin is not in the squad because I want to give him a rest,” Wenger said. “he has played every single game recently and played for Russia on Tuesday night.”

Now that Kieran Gibbs is back to fitness, Wenger is also taking the chance to rest Gael Clichy, who has an ongoing back problem. “I left Clichy behind because he has a small back problem and we will take the opportunity to clear that out.”
