Arsenal keeper news – Butland and Stekelenburg 39

Posted on January 24, 2013 by Bob

One of the many positions that Arsenal are looking to strengthen is the one between the goalposts. Arsene Wenger believes that Wojciech Szczesny needs another quality keeper at the club to push him and get the best out of him. Wenger thinks he is a little too comfortable in his number one role, while also worrying that the reserve keepers are not quite good enough in case Szczesny picks up another injury.

Arsene Wenger has been looking for an experienced keeper to provide competition and cover for the current Arsenal number one, Wojciech Szczesny. The feeling is that the Polish international is too comfortable in his position and Wenger thinks he needs pressure to keep his performances high and encourage him to work and improve his game.

The other problem is the worry about what will happen if he is injured or suspended. Vito Mannone had a chance to impress earlier in the season, but was in need of improvement, although reasonably solid. The Gunners have been linked with a number of keepers recently. including Pepe Reina from Liverpool, Victor Valdes from Barcelona and Maarten Stekelenburg from Roma.

Transfer Rumour: Dutch Goalkeeper Offered To Arsenal by AH

According to reports from several European countries, Arsenal have been offered Dutch international goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. The former Ajax man has also been offered to London rivals Fulham FC who have also expressed an interest. The current AS Roma keeper has reportedly undergone a rift with the management staff at the Italian club and he has now been told he can go for a cut price of £3.5 million.

London based newspaper ‘The Metro’ reports;
‘According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Stekelenburg has been offered to both Arsenal and Fulham for a cut-price £3.5million, and a deal could be done in the next few days.’

Arsenal rumours Aug 22nd – Stekelenburg, Clichy, Fabregas and Emmanuel Riviere 13

It’s Sunday yet again and as usual the papers are full of football transfer rumours, and quite a few of them are about Arsenal. I reported yesterday that the latest goalkeeping rumours are saying that Wenger has turned his attention to Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenberg, after the deals for Shay Given and Mark Schwarzer now look dead in the water.

Well it seems that Elf Voetball in Holland is also reporting the Arsenal interest today, but there seems to be an air of desperation in the papers trying to find another goalkeeping target. As i said yesterday, there is little or no evidence in support of the rumours, and as most of the commenters pointed out, Stekelenburg played in the Champions League Qualifiers this week for Ajax last week, so wouldn’t be able to appear for Arsenal until the knockout stages………

Stekelenburg is now Wenger’s main goalkeeping target 33

With the news yesterday that Arsene Wenger seems to have accepted Fulham’s refusal to sell Mark Schwarzer, todays biggest Arsenal transfer rumour is that he has now turned his attention to the Ajax and Holland goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg had an excellent World Cup, and the Ajax Financial Director Jeroen Slop admitted last week that the Dutch giants were in financial difficulties: “Ajax recorded a loss of 21 million euros because of missing out on the group stage of the Champions League achievement.” he said. “We cannot afford the same loss rate and will be forced to sell; and top players are not excluded.”

Arsenal rumours 26th July – Vertonghen, Stekelenburg, Lukaku, Wickham and Bakambu 19

There is an air of desperation in the media’s Arsenal transfer rumours today, especially when they make the main link Jan Vertonghen. The ex-team-mate of Thomas Vermaelen quite clearly said in his interview that he wouldn’t consider leaving Ajax for another year at least, but the papers have turned it into a come-and-get-me plea.

Okay, I agree that Wenger may well bring him in one day (Ajax are Arsenal’s feeder team after all!), but it certainly won’t be this summer. I will personally guarantee that okay?

Arsenal to raid Ajax for £42m star trio! 46

Posted on July 20, 2010 by admin

There is a report coming out of Italy (of all places!) saying that Arsene Wenger is going to return to Ajax with a massive offer for three of their World Cup stars. Calcio News 24 has reported that Arsenal are targeting goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, right-back Gregory van der Wiel, and the Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, and are willing to pay a massive £42m to tempt Ajax into selling.

Van Der Wiel has been linked with Arsenal for some time now, and Wenger has already stated that he is still in the market for a defender. Stekelenburg was ever-present for Holland as they fought their way to the World Cup Final and would be the perfect replacement for Manuel Almunia, and perhaps the news that Eduardo is leaving the Emirates may have created a space for a new striker at Arsenal.
