Team News: Van Persie and Sagna to start as Arsenal play to win against Villa
It seems that things are looking a bit brighter for Arsene Wenger with news that a few Arsenal players are back in contention after recovering from injury.
Kieran Gibbs is not back yet, but Wenger is very happy to know that Bacary Sagna’s return will mean that the Gunners have at least one true full-back in the team. Wenger said a couple of days ago: “He is back in full training. Many players who are not specialist right backs have been playing in this position so we are relieved to have Bacary back.”
On the left, we can expect to see Thomas Vermaelen back as well, with Mertesacker and Koscielny in the middle. Djourou has a “small” hamstring problem but would only be on the bench (at best!) for emergencies. Miquel will also be hoping to make an appearance at some point. Francis Coquelin is also fit again and will give Wenger an added option, making the Arsenal defence looking a bit more solid right now.
Wenger intends to go all out for the win after losing three games in a row, which means captain Van Persie will be on the pitch from the start. Wenger said: “I gave him a week holiday before the last FA Cup game but now we are at a moment when, for the confidence of the team, it is important we come back and win.”
Wenger believes that the returning players will up Arsenal’s performance, and will give them hope of going all the way in this competition. He said: “If you qualify of course there are openings there,”
“That’s why it is important that we keep the focus on qualifying on Sunday. Then, you never know, sometimes you can have runs later in the competition which can be easier than those at the start. But you can’t choose them, that is the charm of the cup.
“For us, a win is important. We were on a strong run and suddenly we have hit three disappointments. What is difficult to take is that all the three games we could have won. That makes me think that giving just a fraction more will get us back on track and we will go on a run again.”
Wenger is also expecting Mikel Arteta and Thierry Henry to rejoin the squad after late tests to give Arsenal a boost, but he is fully aware that Aston Villa will not be pushovers. He warned: “They are a good side if you look at the names they have on the team-sheet,”
“Any team in the Premier League is difficult to beat, whether it is for qualification in the Cup or points in the League, and you always have a tough job with Aston Villa.
“They are a side with young, talented players and they are always dangerous going forward. The pace they have up front, with the likes of Agbonlahor and Albrighton, is dangerous. And you see that Robbie Keane has come back and scored goals straight away. That shows you the quality of their players.
“The most important thing is that we are ready for it and come out of the blocks with full power. We did not do that against Manchester United. I feel in the second half we put in a very good performance but in the first we were a bit jaded.”
Arsenal are today looking much, much stronger than they have in previous weeks, and today is a MUST-WIN.
There are no excuses to be given with such a strong squad available…….

welcome back sagna, best right back , in the country , we missed you , hopefully djourou will dissappear into thin air. lets face it we have been bloody unlucky with injuries to our back line so lets get everyone back cause when all our defenders are fit we have one of the stronest backlines in the pl. So kick on boys and get that top four and hope some of our rivals can suffer the same bad luck we have , we can do it .
Our squad is begining to look strong again..

@Alex I think I read somewhere another 3 weeks to a month.
Just kidding, but it would be great if Wenger bid a bit higher now for Podolski and we acquired his services. Does anyone know how much his current club want for him?
Glad to see Sagna, Coquelin are back, and I’m most happy about Wenger deciding to go for the F.A Cup now. Maybe he was reading our comments? In that case Hazard and Samba should be on the way

To be honest im torn between mertesacker at centre back and tv at left back or tv at centre back and coquelin at left back. just think that with villas mobili front mertesacler is more likely to struggle. i would even consider miquel in the middle with kos and tv at left.back put per on the.bench

will be surprised if arsenal maintain all their key players fit 4 a lengthy time.one should be insane to think that these injuries are plain bad luck,it could lie in training regime.or maybe am reading 2 much into it owing to lack of depth in squad…why is that players like terry, drogba, lampard stay absolutely fit.apparently theres now a ‘gene test’ which can predict a persons ‘fitness levels’.but scientists think it will be unfair 2 use this dashing hopes of ppl whose injury prone ….

Great team performance and spirit in the 2nd half but once again wenger is papering over cracks,he’s been doing this for 6yrs or so..bit of a crisis and pressure followed by some impressive results and performances and then back to losing games again..we can’t keep giving him a stay of execution wen he grabs good results, the only result that matters this year is a trophy on the table

it makes me laugh as some fans were stating get wenger out at half time today but it appeared we showed great spirit and now these fans are praising arsenal..your either behind the manager and the players or your not one thing is for sure arsene doesnt have my full backing at the minute but the board certainly do not have any backing from me..the critics who say ramsey isnt good enough will hopefully of been silenced today, he’s still learning his game and played amazing today. Today has shown that when we have that spirit in which was shown in the second half, how much it lifts the fans and the club as a whole. I think were two or three signings away from competing again whether wenger will buy who knows? one tihng is for sure arsenal till i die…f.a cup 2012? who knows!!!

Good comeback gunners! Thought we were toast half time. Why can’t we play like we did second half in every game? we showed a real urgency and we were more direct. First half we fannied about outside the box as usual. I still think Wenger needs to make some serious changes, but it was our lads who brought us through he second half.
Kossie and RvP were fantastic. Ramsey had a decent game for a change. Ox and Walcott looked much better second half. Coquelin unfortunately didn’t have the best of games. Was beaten several times in RB, but he didn’t give up and trying his hardest…that shows good character.
I really have no idea what Wenger said to them half-time. What I did notice was the lack of space making up front in the first half. Our midfielders would get the ball and there would be no one forward to pass to. The ball just kept getting passed around the outer box. Second half, all our attackers were making space and pulling their defense apart in doing so. We took good advantage of the gaps, runs by Ox, Walcott, Rosicky, Ramsey even Kossie were brilliant. We definately need more football like that. Our wingers also hung wide, so our attacking style was mixed up all the time, wing play then down the middle then wing play etc. Villa didn’t know what hit them

I love wenger don’t get me wrong I just think he has had numerous chances to make the slightest changes and is too stubborn to do it wen the whole world knows you have to move with the times..I wouldn’t mind if he admitted the issues but he doesn’t so this is my last loyal year..no trophies then he should perhaps seek a new challenge in Spain or France and maybe we shud blood a new coach with new ideas..I wouldn’t say no to mourinho if it meant a couple of years of trophies

some people are pathetic, ive been behind Wenger all along and at HT I thought we were extremly unlucky and were outdone by some good tatics (defend then quick counter) but the second half performence was excellent and was largly down to Wenger and his team talk, no matter what way you look at it. Also I felt he made some very decent subs at the right times, which is something which should be highlighted based on the recent criticism. I firmly believe the F.A Cup is winnable this year and I hope we continue to take it very seriously. IN WENGER I TRUST!

Reading through some posts and it seems like some fans seem to think that anyone who does not agree with AW is not a true gooner.
Well that would mean that you have only supported Arsenal for 15 years so I need to inform you that believe it or not we have been around for a lot longer.
If you pay for a ticket, buy the merchandise, sign on to Arsenal tv or support the club in the ground or financially from miles away you are entitled to your opinion.
Yes the team performed well even in the first half when we went 0-2 down but come back down to earth and see that once again our left flank was exposed, we cannot defend crosses, and Fabianski should not be paid to play in goal for anyone.
Yes it’s great to continue in the FA cup and we would all love winning it but I refuse to get carried away and make like everything is hunky dory because we managed to win at home to a team that is average at best.
We have already lost eight games in the PL this season and that is terrible for a team that wants to play in Europe (board and managers target, not the fans) so one win in the FA cup will not make us stand up and proclaim any faith in the shareholders, board and manager.
just because the aforementioned do not have any ambition other than playing in the CL does not mean that us fans need to go mental just because we are in the fifth round.
When we win it that’s when we will make a fuss.

@Leonarsenal yeah man i get that part of it, i celebrated
BUT
i dont want to be that fan that gets so cheerful now with that win against Villa but then a month later we would still have deadwood in our team taking on Mila
I would rather be the fan that admits that we have junk on the team, and still call for a change at Arsenal. A change that would bring in brilliant players in the next few days to HAMMER Milan.
So all the fans that think everything is “fine and dandy” today will be the same fans that would be to sad to post on

@ P.P i dont know what the outcome of the milan match will be, i do know that to beat them we will need our strongest 11 over the two legs, it’s just a breathe of fresh air when we actually come from behind to win a game instead of taking the early lead, i.e fulham and swansea then chucking it away, do you think wenger will buy in the next two days? and how big a setback is jack wilshere! gutted!

@Leon sorry mate, but this is Arsenal, a team that is meant to be feared, not a team that must scrape a win. A team that must dominate both halves, not one half. Dont let the mediocrity of the last few seasons change your standards man.
Like i said, i celebrated, but a win does blind me from the reality of the situation, and that situation is that our 1st team is not not good enough qualify for next seasons champions league.
Tomorrow, it will dawn upon you cheering fans that todays win means nothing in the big picture. For some of you, it will only dawn on you with our next loss.

@ P.P your missing the point mate as arsenal fans we all share the same views about how things could be so much better , how we are arsenal , a team that is dominant throughout europe..i’m merely stating that it was great to win in the manner in which we won today. On the other hand I agree with you that we must be feared and get back to the glory days. I hope we kick on from this and get the 3 points at bolton midweek!

@anxious true, but Wenger is too comfortable, he looks at a loss as just a loss while we, the fans, have terrible weeks because of a loss. Wenger needs to feel the heat to wake up and take the fans seriously, we are Arsenal, we should be fighting for a TITLE, not a top 4 finish.
being overjoyed with todays win means that you accept Arsenal as being a mediocre Europa League team

@Leon i agree but i disagree with your few that todays win was “great”
if we won 3-0 then i would say it was “great”
the manner in which the game was won was far from “great”
if we versed Barcelona and got a win like that i would feel far better, but against Villa, its laughable.
same with our win against Leeds
what i am trying to get at is: there is no proof that we are making any progress as a club, we play HOPING to win
we must have HOPE even against Bolten
but we would EXPECT a victory last season and the seasons before that

was it a good win? how the players respond from now onwards will determine that not what we say or think.
i think back to how the players celebrated the goals and then the final whistle at stamford bridge, and the run we went on after which was great. Then i think about the game against fulham and how we ended that run.
for what its worth i think its all in the mind with this lot, all teams loose games but we seem to loose a game then loose belief which leads to more defeats, i dont think its the quality thats lacking i think its belief and confidence, coming back from 2-0 down will help, players coming back from injury will help too. The season is not lost for this team, still in the cup and cl and a top 4 spot reachable, we may well all look back at this game in 4 months as the one that saved our season, its totally upto the players what happens now! but thank god sagna is back and coquelin too, them two at full back and verm and kosh back in the middle if you dont mind please thankyou ta! its verminator not mertinator!!!

@P.P I agree with you. What I noticed the most is that we are not the Invincibles anymore. That days of lass and pin point accuracy passing are gone. We still have shimmer of it, but what will us games from now on are sheer determination and hard work. That is why we came back second half. We were hell bent on winning, you could see it in the players. Where as when we had the Invincibles, they made it look sooo easy. We just don’t have those sort of caliber players anymore, and the board or Wenger will not fork out for those types of players. So if we expect to win the F.A cup and actually any of our games, we will need the same fight and spirit we had today second half.
But you have to ask yourself, why is it now that we have to struggle to win games, where a few years ago we completely munched every other team? Lack of quality signings? Bad management? I honestly think it is a case of both. Sorry Wenger but as P.P said just fighting for 4th place isn’t good enough concerning what AFC has achieved in the past. We have the resources to buy players. Why will they not be bought? Is it Wenger’s policy or the board clutching the coin purses a bit too tight?
Anyway a victory is a victory and I’m proud of our boys today. Let’s take it one game at a time. And keep playing the Ox please.

You is on point, especially in regards to what you say re: pro wenger fans who did not exist pre 1998.
Yeah plucky win today but can hardly be called a masterful display. Will not get carried away as the squad as a whole is quite dire and gazidis and wenger remain two of the biggest liars/spin doctors in football.
Want AFC to do well but to do so competently. Current squad far from competent.
